INSIDE THE MAN CAVE STORY BY

FOR MEN GO UPSCALE

all them what you will – man cave, manctuary, man pit – the place where your hubby goes to chill out isn’t just the basement anymore. Sure, some of these spaces are still in the garage. But old recliners and a sorry pool table have been replaced by state-of-the-art sound systems, leather couches and high-definition big-screen TVs. The trend has become so popular, the DIY Network even has a “Man Caves” show (7 p.m. Wednesdays). UrbanDictionary.com defines a man cave as a

Doug Axt wields the remote for his 121-inch television screen as he stands behind the bar of his highstyle man cave. In the background are two of his vintage movie posters.
“room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in a solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in certain hobbies and activities without interruption. The area is usually decorated by the male, who uses it without interference from any female influence.” Many men in Lincoln, it seems, have created man caves for themselves. And true to the growing trend, their man caves are special places, decorated with designer touches and kitted out with high-end gear. Inside Lincoln has profiled three man caves in this issue. Check them out and get ready to deal with some serious man-cave envy.

A RARE JEWEL

estled between the Yuba River and the Sierra Buttes, Herrington’s Sierra Pines Resort is a rare jewel. With 21 rooms, the resort has a variety of spacious accommodations. Michael Herrington says the resort started in 1967 with just a couple of rental cabins, but each year the family added a few more. There’s even eight units that overlook the Yuba River, several with forest views and a few kitchen stop in just to catch a couple units. of trout from the well-stocked Not that visitors would pond out front. Nearby are the Upper and Lower Sardine lakes. Lower Sardine Lake is accessible by car and the upper portion is about a mile hike. Although not too steep, the trail is rocky, but well worth it for the view. Although Sierra County is dotted with lakes, Upper Sardine is one of the most beautiful. Lower Sardine Lake spills out into the Sand Pond, a popular swimming spot in summer. There is an interpretive trail through wetlands nearby. Though not paved, the trail is an easy hike with boardwalks
over much of the grassy wetlands. A few downed trees can make the way a little more challenging, but nothing a novice hiker can’t handle. Frazier Falls is another area to be sure to visit. A paved wheelchair-accessible trail leads across Frazier Creek to an area that overlooks the falls. More adventurous hikers can leave the path for a short jaunt to the top of the falls. Graeagle has paddleboats to rent that you can take it out on the millpond and it also boasts a number of golf courses, including the 18-hole Graeagle Meadows Golf Course. The resort is open seasonally from May through September and discounts are
offered at the very beginning and very end of the season. Sierra Pines is located just outside Sierra City on Highway 49 between Grass Valley and Truckee. Driving up either Highway 49 through Grass Valley or up I-80 past Truckee to Highway 89 takes about 2½ hours. For optimal sightseeing, take one route there and the other back. Highway 49 follows the Yuba River, while taking I-80 to Highway 89 will take visitors through the Sierra Valley. It is well worth the drive. Waterfalls, rustic barns and serene lakes provide some of the scenic beauty and charm at Herrington’s Sierra Pines resort, nestled between the Yuba River and the Sierra Buttes. COURTESY

IT AND THE CARS WILL COME “We used to have a smaller garage,” Jacobsen said, perhaps a third the size. But, he explained, he didn’t really have enough rooms for his cars and a workspace, too. Jacobsen’s new garage currently plays host to a 1966 Corvette, an Austin Mini Cooper, a Lexus SUV and a Porsche GT3 – “a race car
with 400 horsepower.” What does wife Beth think of the vehicular obsession? “I drive them all when I get a chance,” she said. The couple met because of their love of cars, Bob said. “It was a blind date,” he said. “I heard about this nurse with an MG.” “That was my first car
when I started working,” she said. “It was a 1959 MGA (a British sports car).” “I’ve been car-crazy from my teenage years,” Bob admitted. “I never outgrew that teenage love of cars. I’ve been in and out of Corvettes and Porsches my whole life.” He is not just a collector, however. Bob does as much of
the maintenance as he can. The garage features 18foot-wide doors that are 12 feet high, as well as a roll-up door on the opposite wall that leads to a pad for washing cars. “We’ve had eight cars in here,” Bob said, for a recent GARAGE/page 14

THEATER FOR A FORMULA ONE FAN
Doug Axt can relax in the comfort of his own home whenever he wants to watch racing or a movie.
Liz Kellar
KARINA WILLIAMS/INSIDE LINCOLN
oug Axt loves the fact that his man cave was the first room to be completely decorated in his Lincoln Crossing home, which he purchased almost three years ago. Axt is a Formula One racing fanatic and so it only made sense that he dedicate his man cave space – actually a room off the landing on the second floor – to becoming the ultimate viewing experience. “I built it because of my passion for racing … and football games aren’t too bad up here, either,” he said. The surprisingly elegant space features leather couches, walls lined with lightblocking draperies, a small back bar and even a popcorn machine. The one anomaly – a stuffed Nemo – serves as Axt’s mascot for watching races. But the centerpiece of the room definitely is the 110inch projection screen hanging on the far wall. A highdefinition projector is suspended from the ceiling and sound is provided by a 210watt amplifier with eight speakers. There is a Playstation 3 for the ultimate gaming experience and an enormous memory foam beanbag to sit on. “When I saw this room, I knew what I was going to do with it,” Axt said. “I drew the whole thing out on paper. Things kept coming to me ... I did a lot of research online.” To decorate the space, Axt
D

bought the three vintage movie projectors on eBay, all for $10 each. Vintage movie posters – “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Star Wars” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” – carry on the theater theme. “I did all the work myself,” he said. “I had to go up in the attic (for the speakers). All the cabling was really tough.” He estimates that he spent a “week solid” getting the system set up the way he wanted
it. Axt admitted he invested a lot of extra money into the high-definition projector, explaining that he wanted a piece of technology that wouldn’t immediately become obsolete. “I was so anal about the whole thing,” he laughed, adding he even bought a battery backup system. “It will keep the system on even if the power goes out,”
he said. Axt is justifiably proud of his decorating efforts, which included putting up all the molding and installing the lighting. “My wife kept an eye on me, but she let me do whatever I wanted to do,” he said. The room is not just for him, Axt said. “My wife and I use it quite a bit,” he said. “The neighbors come over for big sports
events.” The PS3 and a karaoke machine also get a lot of use, he added. “I don’t go to movies anymore,” Axt said. “I don’t have to. I just wait for the movies to come out (on DVD). You can pause it, go get a glass of wine.”

od Pope’s garage is his man cave – but like many of the new generation of man-cave dwellers, his space has become a neighborhood hangout. There’s a stereotypical pool table, but there’s also a pinball machine, two televisions – one a flat screen and one for the Wii — and a vintage 1944

Wurlitzer jukebox. “When I was 13, my dad bought it for $15,” Pope said. “It took us years to get it up and running.” The jukebox, which can be fitted with both 45s and small 33s, is well-stocked with music. “It tends to break down – it’s been a challenge,” pope said. “But it’s fun.” There are quite a few pieces in the garage that were handed down from his dad. One piece of “art” that
hangs on the wall had its genesis in a keg that had belonged to Pope’s father. “Over the years, I collected the pull handles, but then I traded the keg for a Coke machine,” Pope explained. “So I turned (the handles) into wall art.” He’s not sure exactly how many there are in the circular hanging, but estimated there are approximately 45 handles. The pool table, he said with a grin, was won on a bet. “It was a $500 bet on a POPE/page 8

49er game,” he said. “I went and picked it up the next day.” The table, Pope said, needed new felt and new legs. “It gets a lot of use,” he said. The garage also holds a Checkpoint Turbo Boost pinball machine. Pope said this was the second one to grace his garage – the first caught on fire, a potential disaster averted when an alert neighbor called to warn them of the flames.
“I found this one for $250 in the paper,” Pope said. “I thought it was too cheap, that it had to be garbage. The guy told me he had gotten into trouble with his wife and needed to take her on a trip.” The Popes have lived in their Foskett Ranch home for a little more than a year and according to Pope, the garage was “just drywall” when they moved in. Fixing it up, he said, was “quite a project.” It has taken him until just recently to finish the space to his liking. “We moved up here not knowing anybody,” Rod’s wife, Karen, said.
But the garage, door open, proved irresistible to the “really nice” neighbors. The Popes’ garage now serves as a social nexus on the block, a place where all the neighbors come over on Sunday afternoon for margaritas – made in the garage’s margarita blender. According to Karen, she married Rod knowing full well she was marrying into a man-cave family. “Rod’s father had a garage similar to this,” she said. “This is very traditional in Rod’s family.”

GARAGE continued from page 4
photo shoot for a coffee table book on deluxe garages. Inside the garage, there are four workbenches, each with telephone, Internet and highdefinition television capability. Each work area has compressed air and one has a 50amp line for a welder and a hoist. “I don’t do anything big,” Bob said. “I putter.” The new garage was designed to match the house, a vintage ’70s A-frame with “lots of glass.” Jacobsen made an effort to use local businesses for the work, saying, “I ran into a bunch of real construction artists in Lincoln.” Because of county building regulations, the garage ended up being much taller than expected – hence the secondstory space. Beth was quick to stake out that area for her quilting work and classes. Downstairs, the walls are covered with 30-plus pieces of car art that Bob has collected for years.
STEVEN HOLMES/INSIDE LINCOLN
Bob Jacobsen walks through his new garage, which can hold as many as eight cars.
“I kept finding pieces I didn’t know were there,” he said. “I knew they were there,” Beth interjected. “The house was full.” Bob ended up hiring interior designer Kerrie Kelly to help design the space and pick the colors. He also had a light
study done and then installed high-output lighting. There is a plasma-screen television mounted on the wall with a stereo system; the satellite TV system for both the house and the garage is housed in the garage. When asked how much time he spends in his man
cave, Bob just laughs. “Not enough,” he said. “I still need a hoist and an air compressor.” “It will be a good hobby if he ever gets retired,” Beth said. But doesn’t the garage feel, well, a little empty with just four cars?
“My motto is, build it and they will come,” Bob joked. “We just finished the garage in January. In a year or two, it will be full. Nature abhors a space.”
