CONSTANT BLOOM Gail and Kathleen Herman’s garden features flowers that bloom nearly all year long.
STORY BY
COUPLE CREATES EYE-CATCHING DISPLAY Liz Kellar
f you drive down Fifth Street between East Avenue and Highway 65, the Herman garden is hard to miss. It doesn’t matter the season – the narrow swath of land in front of the house on the corner of Fifth and B streets is always ablaze with color. Currently, the lot is bright with California poppies; earlier in the spring, wild freesias dotted the landscape, which is punctuated with a burbling waterfall. It’s hard to believe than a little more than five years ago, this was a weedy plot of vacant land. The parcel was part of a large ranch, said Gail Herman, and the original home on the property had been burned down by the city

in a firefighting exercise. The Hermans bought the land in 1998 but didn’t begin building on it until 2003. While Gail designed the house, the garden was wife Kathleen’s baby. “I sat down with some garden books,” she said. “I had an idea of what I wanted .. But it’s still a work in progress.” The couple mainly planted bulbs and perennials, Gail said, since they wanted a lowmaintenance yard. “Everything comes back,” Gail said. The couple worked to preserve what they found on the property as they cleared it, including a small patch of wild iris that graces what is now the back yard. “The freesias came up when we cleared the property,” Gail said. “They were

WAYS TO KEEP YOUR GARDEN
well-managed and pleasing-to-look-at yard provides enjoyment for the owner of the property and to anyone who passes by. It also can add value to your property. The nine ways listed below are certainly not all of the things you can do to have a beautiful yard, but they will help head you in the right direction.
A
of the warm season months, but when our weather consistently stays over 90 degrees, we recommend watering daily. Also, in the winter, if we have not had a soaking rain in the past week it is a good idea to water. Your plants still need water in the winter, and if the soil is moist it helps prevent freeze damage when we have frosty mornings.
1
5
Understanding what type of soil your yard has is an important part of the gardening process. In our area, there are many types of soils, some quite good and some quite poor. Some plants do well in each of these two scenarios, but putting a plant that requires rich, welldrained soil in clay and cobblestone soil is a guarantee for failure.
Soil condition
2
Most plants require fertilizing. You have choices when you make a decision to fertilize. Do you want to use manufactured fertilizers, or natural fertilizers? Both of these types will provide necessary nutrients for your plant and both can be quite effective.
Fertilizing
6
Pruning will help strengthen your plant, help it grow in a desired direction, allow light to penetrate to the center of the plant, and allow you to remove dead or damaged branches. Pruning also can encourage blossoming in many plants. There are definite right and wrong ways to prune. You can research this on the Internet, in books, or at classes.
Proper plant selections
Select plants based on your soil type, or modify the soil to meet the plant’s needs. This means creating raised beds or mounds if you have poor quality soil and bringing in additional quality soil like planters mix. When you are at the nursery, select plants that look healthy and can support themselves in their pot. Avoid plants that are drooping or wilted. Look for insects on the plants or weeds in the containers. Avoid any plant that has any of these problems because bringing them home will introduce these unwanted intruders into your existing plants.
3
Different types of plants require different types of irrigation and different amounts of water. Drip irrigation is the most efficient means of irrigating plants because each plant has its own source of water. You can use different emitters that are designed to put out one half, one, or two gallons per hour. Watering every other day is a good cycle for most

The company provides landscape design and installation meeting a wide range of customer needs including residential and commercial projects. Natural stone work, pavers, low voltage lighting, and dramatic water features, as well as drainage, irrigation, and plant installation are many of the services they provide. For more information, call 663-5800 or e-mail jardinelandscape@ starstream.net.
Proper planting
Dig a hole two to three times the width of the plant container and about one and a half times the container depth. Fill the hole with a soil amendment like planters mix. A time release starter fertilizer will help get your plant off to a good start and can also be placed in the hole. Remove the plant from the container. If the roots are visible and have created a circular root mass against the edge of the container, gently loosen the roots prior to placing the plant in the hole The crown of the plant, this is the place where the stem enters the soil, should be above the existing soil level about one inch. Pack the soil around the plant firmly and water the new plant so that all of the new soil is moistened.

Pruning
provide a nice splash of color to brighten up your garden. Also recognize that as good a job as you do with your base plants, you will occasionally have to replace a plant that dies or no longer looks appealing. This is just part of the gardening cycle.

Introducing annuals and replacing plants
Most gardens at one time or another will be attacked by some sort of pest that must be managed. Once again, you have choices of manufactured or natural pesticides. Each can be effective, but we recommend using natural means of insect control if at all possible. Your nursery can help you with the proper remedy for your specific problem. Mulching around your plants helps keep weed growth down and also helps retain moisture in the soil. You have many choices of types of mulch that are effective and also are pleasant-looking.
The final step is the use of annuals. Annuals typically introduce vibrant color into your garden. Their life cycle is such that they need to be replaced annually. They typically grow quite quickly and can www.goldcountrymedia.com

Every year after that they promise to give back 25 volunteer hours and 12 continuing education classes.” It’s a promise Effa doesn’t mind fulfilling. Gardening got into Effa’s blood at a young age. Growing up in Wisconsin, she said she always had a big vegetable garden. After moving to California 40 years ago, nothing changed. She spent nine years on a five-acre plot of land in Newcastle and contin-
ued the craft for the seven years she’s lived in Sun City. Although her yard is much smaller, Effa said raised beds let her plant everything she wants. Her current vegetable garden consists of tomatoes, artichokes, grapes, lettuce, sugar peas, lettuce, onions, garlic and oregano. “I enjoy eating from my garden,” she said. “I enjoy watching things grow. … It’s really nice to live off the land, even though it’s a small lot. It’s healthier, too.” Those who want their own veggie garden should start EFFA/page 18

buried in weeds.” If there is a defining theme in the Herman garden, it is flowers. “I love flowers, any kind of flowers, even wildflowers,” Kathleen said. “You name it, I have it – gardenias, poppies, all kinds of bulbs. In summer, the hibiscus start blooming. These are made for the area, they go dormant in the winter. I have roses, iris. The gladiolus are starting to come up. It’s constantly changing. There’s something blooming all the time – usually something all year long.” According to Kathleen, she doesn’t really spend that much time gardening now that everything’s in place. “I’m out here daily and if I see a weed, I’ll pull it,” she said. “I’m just constantly picking, just cleaning up and making room for new things to grow.” Kathleen and Gail said the garden is mostly complete, but Kathleen admits to sometimes getting a yen for a new plant. “Yeah, I get the bug,” she laughed. “But I don’t know where I’d put it.”
A ladybug, above, is a sign of good health in the Herman garden on Fifth Street. A flagstone path, above right, leads through clumps of wild freesias in front of the Hermans’ home. The front porch of the house, right, affords an ever-changing view of the flowers in the front yard.

PLACER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS Staff Report
he University of California Co-operative Extension’s Placer County Master Gardeners are hosting its annual Mother’s Day Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. This year, six country gardens will be featured in the Meadow Vista and Applegate area. The cost is $10 per person with children younger than 12 free. This is a rain or
T
shine event. ■ Connie’s Garden and Christina’s Garden — Visit two neighbors who love to garden in their different exposures with their own unique approaches and styles. Connie has a young, fouryear-old garden filled with filtered shade and an incredible variety of plants and flowers. Christina’s has full sun, a cottage motif and is 50 years old. It’s full of bulbs and perennials, has a wildflower area and still had the original roses. Both gardens are fun to see

and appreciate. The driveway is narrow and parking has some limitations so someone will be there to direct traffic. ■ Nora’s Garden — This terraced, hilltop garden “borrows” the beautiful near and distant views of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Comfortable spaces and cozy seating areas are perfect for outdoor enjoyment and entertaining. A large, sculpted water feature adds relaxing sounds and provides an eyecatching focal point as you enter.
■ Elly’s Garden — For those of you who compete with deer, this is the garden to pay attention to. Explore this wide-open, sunny space with a large variety of plants that are mostly deer resistant or have been planted in such a way as to discourage their munchers. Check out the various themed plantings, use of mulch, garden structures and whimsical art. There’s a little something for everyone to enjoy in this garden. ■ Don’s Garden — Experience a contemporary and dramatic environment where color, texture and fra-
grance come together in great harmony. Man-made rock creeks and waterfalls flow through the landscape and even under the entry bridge. Enjoy the decks that overlook an expansive pond that features numerous water plants and a dry stream bed that extends out through the landscaper of native and nonnative trees and shrubs. ■ Betty & Dave’s Garden — Stroll through a peaceful, expansive, park-like setting, complete with rolling lawns and year-round creek TOUR/page 18

PLANT SOCIETY ANNOUNCES NATIVE PLANT SALE The California Native Plant Society is holding its annual spring plant sale at Sierra College from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. on Saturday, May 3. Besides drought-tolerant plants for sale, there will be ferns, shrubs, trees, wildflower seeds, T-shirts, and a just-published book, “Wildflowers of Nevada and Placer Counties.” The sale is in the parking lot of the Life Science Building.
EFFA continued from page 6
now. All plants should be in the ground by the end of May, Effa warned. And if any questions arise, don’t be afraid to ask. Placer County’s master gardener program boasts 70 active volunteers and a free hotline – (530) 889-7388. Questions can also be answered online at ceplacer.ucdavis.edu or in person at one of the many events master gardeners attend. “The information taught is based on actual research. The mission is to pass on accurate information,” Marini said. “For example, there may be 50 folk ways to get rid of gophers, but we teach the tested process.”
