s a builder of luxury homes, Matthew Estes is in a unique position to know exactly what features are the most desirable in a home. The owner of Hegseth Homes, who has built extensively in Lincoln’s Catta Verdera subdivision, said outdoor features are enormously popular – outdoor rooms, pools, putting greens and even bocce ball courts. The house Estes built a little more a year ago for Frank and Maryanne Schubert has many of those increasingly desirable features, starting with a fountain with hand-

made Mexican talavera tiles in the courtyard. “Water features are a big deal here,” Estes said. In the sloped backyard overlooking the golf course, the Schuberts enjoy a lap pool with a spa on one end, as well as a more than 50-foot-long manmade creek with multiple waterfalls. “We wanted the pool as something for future grandchildren,” Maryanne Schubert said. “But we didn’t want it to be the main feature of the backyard. We were thinking of an infinity-edge pool, but it didn’t work with the (site) … I like the idea of doing pool volleyball.” The pool is 3 feet deep at each end and is 5 feet in the OASIS/page 3

TOP 10 WAYS TO STAY SAFE THIS SUMMER Jamie Trump

on’t have a bummer summer. Inside Lincoln offers these 10 summer safety reminders that’ll keep you protected and ensure a season of fun in the sun.

D

■ 1 WATER SAFETY One of the most popular activities during a Lincoln summer is swimming, be it in a pool, at the lake or down at the river. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can also be one of the most dangerous. Learning to swim and staying safe around the water is very important. And locals don’t have to travel far to do so. Sea Otter Swim Lessons in Loomis offers classes year round for children as young as 4 months old to adults up to 90. (www.seaotterswim.com) The Placer Aquatics Club is another way to go. Lessons feature low instructor-to-child ratios ranging from parent-tot style lessons to competitive stroke instruction at Granite Bay High School. (www.

■ 2 BOATING SAFETY Marine Patrol boats watch over Folsom Lake boaters every summer, yet unfortunately, it seems every year there’s an accident. One common factor in these incidents, according to the State Parks Department, is alcohol. Alcohol coupled with wind, boat noise, vibration, wave action, sun and glare, has a tremendous adverse influence on judgment and response time. The California Department of Boating and Waterways (www.dbw.ca.gov) offers boat safety classes in good seamanship and reviews the recommended equipment small boats should have.

■ 3 SUN SAFETY The weather is warm and outside activities are abundant, but whether it’s hiking,

(www.spwipes.com) To protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, she recommends staying in the shade whenever possible, wearing UV protective glasses and a hat with a 3inch brim and using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

■ 4 HEAT SAFETY Dehydration and exhaustion are other common consequences of getting too much sun. The American Red Cross reminds those heading outdoors to pack extra water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, bring an umbrella or hat to shade the sun and avoid strenuous activities, especially during the hottest part of the day. If it’s necessary, demanding work should be done during the coolest part of the day, usually between 4 and 7 a.m.

■ 5 MOSQUITOES/BUG SAFETY Protecting yourself from bugs and the diseases they carry is another must-do. Placer County’s Health and Human Services recommends staying inside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most prevalent. If that’s not an option, use a bug repellent with DEET, wear long sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors and stay away from any standing water where bugs and mosquitoes breed. placeraquaticsclub.org) Before you know how to swim, remember to wear a lifejacket or floating device whenever you’re around water. 2

picnicking or gardening, remember to protect yourself from the sun. According to Kelley Moreno, CEO of Spwipes, a

whistle used to scare off any wild animals.

■ 8 FIRE SAFETY Fire safety is another hot topic this time of year. When outdoors, always know the burning regulations before making a campfire. At home, the South Placer Fire District reminds residents to protect their properties by maintaining 100 feet of defensible space around the home. If a fire is to break out nearby, this space will prevent it from spreading to a structure.

■ 9 CAR SAFETY

treats, but they must be stored properly. Food should not be left out in the heat for more than an hour on 90-degree and above days and anything with mayonnaise should never be left in the sun for too long. Also, make sure all guests wash their hands before eating.

■ 7 HIKING/CAMPING SAFETY Folsom Lake, the American River and the foothills offer an abundance of hiking and camping paradises this time of year, but you must to be smart to stay safe when exploring. The American Red Cross says it’s always safer to hike or camp with at least one other person. That way, if someone gets hurt, the other person can go for help. An itinerary should also always be left with a responsible person back home. A summer hiking/camping checklist should include a compass, first-aid kit, map of the area, pocketknife and

It’s hot outside, but don’t be confused – a car does not make for a cool place to stay out of the sun. Children and pets should never be left in a car for long. According to the Roseville Dog Owners’ Group, even on a mild day – 75 to 80 degrees – the temperature inside a car can quickly rise up to 130 degrees. This can cause heat stroke and even death in humans and their canine friends.

■ 10 VACATION SAFETY Taking a family trip this summer? While this might make for a carefree break, don’t be careless. KidSource online reminds parents of small children to check out the place they’re staying to ensure it’s kid-friendly. Parents should pay attention to windows and doors and check for proper hand and guardrails along stairways and decks. Also, inspect patios, decks and porches for exposed nails and other dangerous items. And always look for household cleaners and other potentially dangerous chemicals in an unlocked cabinet or closet.

■ 6 FOOD SAFETY Summer is the time for picnics, barbecues and cookouts. Burgers, potato salad and sandwiches are common www.goldcountrymedia.com

middle, so water volleyball players can stand at each end. Overlooking it all is an outdoor room complete with flatscreen TV, gas log fireplace and barbecue. The concrete patio has been acid-washed and a large palm fan rotates lazily overhead. “We are always out there,” Maryanne Schubert said. “Frank will got out there and turn on the golf channel and be as happy as a clam. It’s like, ‘Don’t forget the meat.’ We’ve had a few burnt meals because of it.” The Schuberts’ outdoor room features approximately $20,000 worth of appliances, including the television, Estes said. “It’s pretty common,” Estes said of the outdoor room. “Almost all of the houses we’ve built in the last five years incorporate some sort of outdoor space … We probably put in some kind of water feature maybe half the time.” The Schuberts’ back yard also sports a small putting

green with artificial grass, which is easy to clean off with a leaf blower. “Some of us do not putt very well,” Maryanne Schubert admitted with a laugh. Although the green was

installed for practice, she admitted she hasn’t used it that much. Estes said pools have never fallen out of fashion in the Sacramento region, most likely due to our hot summers and

temperate climate year-round. “It’s a resale feature,” he said. “Most people put in an entertaining pool, lot of freeform pools, more shallow. Diving boards are gone … I haven’t installed a diving

board since I don’t know when, 1999 maybe.” Walk-in pools are popular, Estes said, as well as something he called a “spool” – essentially an extremely large spa that can be left cold or heated. “That’s the newest thing,” he said. “It’s maybe 15 feet by 15 feet, so it’s still feasible to heat up.” Most entertaining pools are fairly shallow, Estes explained, generally 3 or 4 feet deep, 6 feet deep at the most. “They’re for people who don’t like to swim,” he said. “They just want to get in and wade around to get cool.” Even though the Schuberts opted for a long, lean lap pool to fit their site, the pool still sports lovely high-end features, including a glass tile border. The pool also features a self-cleaning option, with a series of jets to funnel debris to one area and a suction device on the bottom. “That’s a new cool trick they’ve come up with,” Estes BACKYARD/page 4

said. “You don’t need a pool sweep.” One of the stars of the backyard has to be the 50- to 60-foot long meandering “creek” with a series of pools and small waterfalls that uses recirculated water. While most water features aren’t quite this elaborate, Estes said a water feature of some sort is typical in new home construction. “We do formal fountains as well,” he said. But streams, he added, are common in the backyard, especially tied in to a pool as an additional feature to the pool. “This (one) is uncommon because it’s free-standing,” he said. Estes estimated the water feature cost approximately $35,000. While most people aren’t going to be able to shell out those kind of bucks, it is not that hard to incorporate a water feature on a budget. “If you just want a formal fountain that is precast, Pottery World is a great resource,” Estes said. “A pool with a waterfall is not easy,

but it is doable” for the do-ityourselfer. “I love it,” Maryanne Schubert said of her creek. “The thought behind it was to recreate a place we stayed on out honeymoon in Lanai.” The resort had a spectacu-

lar water feature, she explained, and “this was as close as we could get.” The Schuberts placed the creek feature just outside their

bedroom so they could hear it in the evening. “I like to listen to the frogs, there’s lot of little wildlife,” Maryanne Schibert said. “I’m

a very light sleeper and this is natural ambient noise.” Listening to the creek, she said, makes her feel that “all’s good with the world.”

atthew Estes, CEO of Hegseth Homes, has built quite a few homes in Catta Verdera —and elsewhere in Northern California. He estimated that about half have been spec homes and half were built for owners. “Right now with this market, we’re trying to sell the specs we have,” he said. Estes said he gets to go all out with the high-end spec homes, designing them with as many desirable features as he can. “These are show-off homes,” he said. – and they have backyard features to match. One home Estes currently has on the market – for an eye-popping $3.2 million – perches high on a hill in Catta Verdera with a stunning view of the Sutter Buttes from the backyard – and a view of downtown Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada from elsewhere in the house. “I don’t think you can get this view anywhere else,” Estes said. The backyard takes full advantage of that view with three tiers, with an infinityedge pool spilling down to a patio with a pergola, which in turns leads down to a putting green and a bocce ball court. There’s even a chipping green. “We chose to landscape it and make it turnkey,” Estes said. “Because it’s a spec home, we gave it a little bit of

OPTIONS IN THE ALOHA STATE David Dickstein

t’s a common debate among wanderlust-prone American households: Hawaii or Central Florida? These are the top-ranked vacation destinations among U.S. families, according to most travel industry surveys, but from where this avid traveler and family man sits, the near-perfect climate and stunning beauty of Hawaii is hard to beat. Plus — and this is a biggie for the budget-minded — the ability to please all ages, whether doing nothing or everything, is something theme-park-dotted Orlando can’t touch. Walt Disney World is all well and good, and “Hakuna Matata” rocks over “Tiny Bubbles,” but if given the choice between Hawaiian shirts or mouse ears, my family will wear the former, mahalo very much. thanks to an “aloha spirit” built on charm, warmth and sincerity. Heck, even its postal abbreviation is a friendly sounding “HI.” It’s an ingrained philosophy that separates a native Hawaiian’s welcome from the questionable cordiality of costumed characters parading along tourist-lined Main Street, USA. But let’s be as clear as the water off Molokini: some islands in this paradise of the Pacific are more ‘ohanafriendly than others. Welcoming families with the sincerest of “aloha” are Oahu, Maui and Hawaii, the latter of which we’ll dub the Big Island to avoid confusing it with the entire state.

Oahu For the family who enjoys Chuck E. Cheese on weekends and mall shopping on Christmas Eve, crowded, congested, but nonetheless legendary Waikiki Beach in Honolulu could be your cup of mango tea. Waikiki, the hub of Hawaii’s most compre-

tourists. No wonder the place feels less of paradise and more like Disney’s Adventureland. There’s no Jungle Cruise on the island known as “The Gathering Place,” but hippos, rhinos and other nature friends can be found at the impressive Honolulu Zoo in Waikiki. The 43-acre attraction near Kapiolani Park takes pride in being the only zoo in the United States to be established through royal grants, not that the Sumatran tiger and Great Horned Owl give a hoot about King Kalâkaua’s legacy. Want to get out of the habitat habit? The barriers between man and animal are removed at Sea Life Park, a popular attraction 15 miles west of Waikiki. Keiki (children) as young as 4 can caress and kiss a dolphin from a waist-deep platform. Encounters with nature of a more adventurous bent are available to older children, such as dives to mingle with sea turtles, stingrays and tropical fish. A must-see for the firsttime visitor is the Polynesian Cultural Center, where in one afternoon you can visit seven diverse islands. Well, sort of. The attraction is broken up in island zones, each featuring such cool children’s activities as coconut cracking, poi ball juggling and Tahitian dancing. A history lesson awaits your family at the USS Arizona Memorial, the final resting place for 1,177 crewmen of the battleship sunk during the 1941 Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor.

The best luaus in Hawaii also are here. Old Lahaina Luau scores highest for presentation, authenticity, hospitality, music, dance, costumes and food. Its newest sister attraction, Ho`omana`o, mixes breakfast with culture. The morning starts with a Hawaiian-style breakfast buffet, but the most nourishing treats are three interactive stations where guests learn about Hawaiian warfare, survival skills and music and dance. My strongest recommendation for a hotel luau is Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency, offering the best food of the hotel class and a show high in energy or grace, depending on whether the act calls for twirling fire or swaying hips and hands. If a horseback ride interests your family, Ironwood Ranch in Napili is my pick because of its quality stable and proximity to Kaanapali. can’t recommend Piiholo Ranch in Makawao, on the edge of the upcountry rainforest. The quality of the horses, the chosen trail, guest relations and the BBQ lunch on the morning picnic ride were all seriously lacking. Despite the countless “I survived the Road to Hana” shirts you’ll see, a side trip to this hamlet on the Eastern coast is worth the 54 miles of twists and turns. Treat yourself to a relaxing stay at the four-diamond Hotel HanaMaui and Honua Spa. There’s not a more luxurious, tranquil spot on Maui, and although having no TV in your plantation-style cottage or suite takes some getting used to, it does clear the mind and lets you better appreciate the dramatic ocean and mountain views, if that’s even possible.

The Big Island For the Goldilocks-type family who thinks Oahu is too hectic and Maui is too uncomplicated, the Big Island might be just right. Like those other islands, Hawaii offers upscale resorts with pristine beaches that welcome the family with open bronzed arms. Larger than all of the other islands combined, the Big Island is graced by steaming Mauna Loa and snow-capped Mauna Kea, both natural wonders worthy of a closer look. Still, the most southeastern island isn’t big enough to avoid having a congested tourist town. That would be Kailua-Kona on the island’s hotel-festooned west coast. The less spoiled North Shore and neighboring Hamakua Coast are adorned by ancient valleys and waterfalls that drop thousands of feet to pools below. To the south is the modest city of Hilo, gateway to the Big Island’s No. 1 must-see, Volcanoes National Park. Lava has been flowing here for nearly a quarter-century thanks to Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. The park is a two-hour drive from hotels in the Kailua-Kona basin. An overnighter in Hilo is suggested for the family with young keiki. While in Hilo, check out 8

the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden just north of town. Nestled in the lush Onomea Valley, the rainforest garden is home to more than 2,000 different species of plants, and is unarguably one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii. Its counterpart on Maui is the Iao Valley, a required stopover before heading to the airport. Back in Kailua-Kona, the

northwestern portion of hotel row features Dolphin Quest, one of the world’s largest natural dolphin habitats and where children as young as 5 can swim with the stars. Make sure the camcorder has plenty of battery life when your child says “aloha” to a dolphin and gets a response in whistles and clicks that’s sealed with a kiss.

he great outdoors isn’t just for camping and fishing anymore. Gracious outdoor living is a popular trend, and in Placer County, we know how to do it right. What’s behind our affair with an alfresco lifestyle? Kathleen Sylvester of Bushnell Gardens Nursery in Granite Bay knows the answer. “Your favorite room is no longer in the house,” she said. She explained that people are looking for a restful, natural atmosphere, rather than a noisy crowded restaurant. “People are looking for a calming effect — couples need a respite,” she said. Today families are paying

more attention to what their homes look like, both inside and out — a practice, she said, that can add thousands to the resale value of your home, and create a personal sanctuary. Updating your outdoor area doesn’t have to be expensive. “There are ways of doing something nice on a budget,” said Jerry Williams, owner of Granite Bay Landscaping Inc. “For the most bang for your buck, it can be as simple as re-working planting beds or dressing them up with bark.” The first step, he explained, is creating a master plan, which can be followed a little at a time, over the course of years. “It definitely behooves someone to have a professional help design a plan, whether it’s small or large,” Williams said. GET FLOORED! Competitive Prices with Small Town Service Tom and Shannon Page’s philosophy on operating their business is all about quality products, installation and unbeatable customer service. Tom grew up managing his father’s floor covering store. After living in Lincoln for 25 years and raising a family here, he decided to venture out on his own. In 2005 they opened their doors offering Lincoln residents the full floor covering experience. Tom and Shannon will bring samples to you and provide you with an estimate free of charge. With Shannon’s interior decorator’s eye, she can assist you in selecting the right look for your floor - free of charge. In addition, she also offers full scale interior decorating at a fraction of the cost of other interior decorators. Keeping it in the family, even their two boys, Zach and Dillon, help out by handing out flyers, cleaning the store and waving the large signs out front. Their mom says it is a great way for them to earn money and teach them about responsibility and hard work. When asked why they started their business here, their reply was simple. “We live and raise our boys here. What could be better than servicing the friends and neighbors we know and getting to meet so many new people that have become great friends?” Their showroom is on Hwy. 65, between Awful Annies and TCBY Yogurt. “If we don’t stock it in our 2,500 s.f. showroom - we can get it! It is all about giving our neighbors the best service and deal possible!”

Atkin Air, located in the Lincoln AirCenter on Flightline Dr., established this slogan “Your Personal Airline” in 1990. Kent and Niki Atkin, owners grew their business from a single airplane to airplanes, jets and thirtyone employees. Despite setbacks in the industry such as Sept. 11, 2001, economic downturns, high gas prices and recently, a disastrous fire that destroyed a hanger and burned up a couple of planes, Atkin Air preservers. In 2007 Atkin Air had doubled their space at the AirCenter. Excellent customer service has always been first and foremost in how they do business. Niki says that it is the little things such as “our planes are detailed every time we fly” that makes them successful. The services they offer are: charter (anywhere you need or want to go as well as scenic and pleasure flights), flight training (all ratings), including a state-of-the-art flight simulator, a Pilot Shop with supplies and gift items and maintenance of their own and private planes.

The love of aviation is what started the two of them in this business and it is what keeps them there. Their three sons are not in the business but are all pilots themselves. In 2007, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce awarded Atkin Air the top, medium “Business of the Year”. In the future, they will keep striving for excellence. reason. “We like to entertain, but our house is relatively small,” she said. “Now, weather permitting, I can host friends, book club and volunteer groups outdoors. We often host my husband’s family — 20 people — for pool parties, and it’s so much easier and more comfortable now.” The great climate in Northern California is perfectly suited for an outdoor lifestyle, but is also known to have extreme weather at times. Williams said the climate changes can be rough on masonry, so the buyer should choose solid masonry structures, rather than masonry that includes mesh and steel studs. “You don’t want anything that will expand and contract,” he said. Granite or concrete countertops are popular, he pointed out, as well as barbecues, pizza ovens and outdoor woks. For high-end improvements, his clients are building swimming pools, full outdoor kitchens and water features, such as water curtains and waterfalls. Outdoor dining areas are becoming increasingly popular as well. Pottery World in Rocklin has a dizzying array of outdoor furniture, statuary, fountains and more. “The Cast Classics Adelante line is

one of our most popular,” Trixie Porter of Pottery World said. “It’s very highend — the copper table top is the most popular, but it also comes in black or marble.” Many table sets, such as the Adelante, include additional pieces, like the chaise lounge, sofa, love seat, swivel bar chair.

It is my passion to create unique interiors by mixing old, new and up-cycled products, materials and furnishings that reflect the lifestyle of the people living or using the space. I do extensive product research so that I am knowledgeable about what I am suggesting that people use in their homes. Today there is so much “green-washing” going on in the industry that I want to make sure that the products or materials really are sustainable, recycled or healthy if that is what they claim to be.

My interior design business specializes in eco-friendly or green design. At Eco-Chic Interior Design we believe that “green design” is “good design”. Eco-Chic takes a holistic approach to design considering all aspects including the site/location, comfort and usability for occupants and the impact of the materials and products on the inhabitants and surroundings. The designs naturally incorporate ecologically sound principles and the use of beautiful, healthy and sustainable materials. • Green Remodeling • Green Commercial Interiors • Green Home Design • Eco-Friendly Party Consulting

backyard might be the perfect way to spend your summertime, and your summer paycheck. “I think that the way the economy is right now, people are staying closer to home. “If you can make it more beautiful, more resort-like, why leave?” Sylvester said. Sterling Pointe Family Dentistry opened their office in 2005. Dr. Kris Martinson has six employees, including his wife Leslie. They offer complete Dental Services including General and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dentures, Crowns and Bridges, as well as emergency care.

What makes this a unique business for Dr. Martinson is the ability to help people and often see an immediate improvement in their oral health. This and the fact that he loves to work with his hands were the reasons that he chose to become a Dentist. Dr. Martinson is a “Top Ten” graduate from the UCLA School of dentistry, and was elected to the O.K.U. Dental Honor Society. The best reward for him is his patients’ satisfaction. It’s very gratifying for him to have his patients refer their friends to him. Dr. Martinson has 30 years experience and looks forward to updating his skills and services with the nearly continual changes and improvements in dentistry. He likes to involve his patients in the decision making process, and considers all aspects of their needs when making treatment recommendations. Dr. Martinson is extremely involved in the Lincoln community. He supports and volunteers for various events and fundraisers for the Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln High School, Twelve Bridges Middle School, ROP, Lincoln Little League and Lincoln Girls Softball. LINCOLN COIN &JEWELRY

In or Take Ou t Dine

916-434-8139 Ric and Nancy Denton opened Lincoln coin and Jewelry Exchange early in 2008. Having owned and operated a successful business in Campbell for over 20 years, they decided to move up to sun City four years ago. Thinking that he might retire, Ric said “I might go out of my mind...” So with that, he opened a beautiful store in the heart of downtown Lincoln. As a long-time coin dealer, Denton brings his knowledge of the coin business and specialty in early collectibles to the counter. Fittingly, the vintage money and precious jewels are kept in an antique bank vault that was built in 1914. It is the size of a walk-in closet, but with two foot-thick walls. Of course, there’s a much more modern safe inside the vault. “Better to be on the safe side, considering the value of inventory” said Denton. As the name implies the business deals in coins, paper money and has a present focus on retail jewelry.

2007 & 2008 KCRA A*list Winner for BEST Sandwich Shop 2007 Sacramento Magazine Subscriber’s Choice Diner Winner

Lincoln residents Pam and Phil Lopez opened Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop in August 2007. The restaurant offers a clean, inviting atmosphere with Lincoln memorabilia decorating the walls. Their love of Mr. Pickle’s Sandwiches and the fact that Pam and Phil really enjoy meeting people are what prompted them to open the business. What makes their business unique is the quality of the food. The deli meat and cheeses are sliced fresh daily. Also, cookies and bread are baked throughout the day. They also offer sandwich trays and salads for parties and events. Pam and Phil recently completed a new patio for outdoor dining and expanded their summer hours to Mon. - Fri., 10AM to 7PM & Sat. - Sun., 10AM-4PM. They want their shop to be a local hangout where everyone feels welcome.

Robert Gallardo, their son, has just relocated from Washington State. He is presently the manager, but Ric hopes to have Lincoln Coin and Jewelry Exchange become just as successful as his prior business so he can just come in and “hang out”.

The backyard of this Catta Verdera home features a covered pergola, above, with a wall of shutters and a gas log barbecue. The first level of the backyard, right, features an infinity-edge pool.

AMENITIES Continued from page 5

“We wanted privacy on that side,” Estes said of the solid pergola wall. “Plus, it gets breezy on this hill. The shutters mean you can have a dinner party up here without getting disturbed by the wind – and if you get

chilly, you can turn on the fireplace.” Plantings of lavender and palm, trees lead down to the bocce court, which is surfaced in crushed oyster shell. “It’s just shy of a regulation bocce court,” Estes said. The putting green and the chipping area both feature artificial grass. “If you don’t want to drive down to

the golf course and you’re an avid golfer and want to practice, this is a great feature,” Estes said. “A lot more people would use this than you’d think.” Putting greens are fairly expensive to install, Estes said – approximately $6,000 for the greens and a chipping area. “It’s a specialty thing and there’s

only a few companies that install them,” he said. While lighting might seem like an afterthought, Estes said it is a very important aspect of the perfect backyard. “You want an ambiance that’s like a stage production,” he said. “You want soft lighting, you want to accent certain things.”
