EVENTS PROGRAMME www.innovationdublin.ie
Smart Economy - Smart City … INNOVATION DUBLIN 2009 This is the first year of INNOVATION DUBLIN and, delightedly, the response has been overwhelming. So many people and organisations responded to our ‘Call for Ideas’ in the Science Gallery in May 2009 that despite challenging times (or maybe because of them!) over 200 events have been organised all over Dublin to showcase their ideas. This is the aim of INNOVATION DUBLIN - to showcase, promote, encourage, inspire and stimulate innovation and creativity, because these are essential elements of our personal, social and economic development and vital to the city’s character and growth. The planned events range from business seminars and science demonstrations to storytelling, workshops, music concerts, and virtual games. The people involved include CEO’s of multi-national corporations, innovators and entrepreneurs in small and medium enterprises, educators, researchers and school children, artists and creators, citizens and communities. This is reflective of the eclectic mix of people and ideas that a city offers. Bringing this mix of people and ideas together is how INNOVATION DUBLIN helps to make Dublin a smarter city. Everyone is invited to participate in the events to celebrate innovation. The festival provides opportunities to promote enterprise, to learn and find out how things work, to network and collaborate, and to connect ideas with opportunities – that’s INNOVATION! The festival will build on Dublin’s reputation as a hub for innovation and creativity. Make sure to check out additional events during the week, give your feedback and inspire, innovate, and interact on www.innovationdublin.ie - Where Ideas & Opportunities Meet!
John Tierney
City Manager and Chair of the Creative Dublin Alliance
Creative Dublin Alliance Cities are hubs of entrepreneurial activity and innovation that are vital to the evolution of the smart knowledge economy globally. Shaping the city’s identity around its capacity for innovation and creativity helps to position Dublin internationally as a competitive city region in the knowledge economy. This is the purpose of the Creative Dublin Alliance, which is a network of diverse urban leaders across the Business, University / Third Level and Government sectors. The Alliance was set up in 2008 to identify, discuss, distribute and implement solutions in response to the challenges that Dublin faces as an internationally competitive city region. One of its first projects is Innovation Dublin which celebrates and showcases the range and level of innovation and creativity that is taking place on a daily basis, despite challenging economic times. The Creative Alliance is about creating a clear vision that unifies around the strengths and future potential of Dublin City Region, built on developing innovation and enterprise. The Creative Alliance would like to thank everyone for the tremendously positive response that it received to this idea and the collaborative working that emerged to help put it all together. The festival is being organised around the following themes:
Public Realm Environment Enterprise People Culture

What’s smart about Ireland’s Smart Economy? Royal Irish Academy Public discussion on Ireland’s Smart Economy. Is the ‘smart economy’ an opportunistic slogan or a feasible goal? If a society is not just an economy how does the ‘smart economy’ relate to the rest of the society? Do we need to fundamentally rethink our approach to the teaching of critical thinking and the arts in our schools to create the basis for a genuine ‘smart economy’? C:
