A Day in the Life of a Photographer 1 People sometimes ask me, “What does a photographer do every day?” They think my work is as simple as pushing a button on a camera. Like other artists, though, I have to make skillful decisions at every stage of the creative process. First, I need to be able to “see” what would make a good photograph. Sometimes I see 5 these things myself, when walking in the city or hiking in the woods. Other times, someone hires me to take pictures of something, such as a wedding, or models in a fashion show. Even then, I still have to figure out exactly which people and objects to take a picture of and how. Once the subject is decided, the real work begins. If I am taking photos outside, I have to figure out when to set up my equipment. I need the light to be just right. I usually get up early 10 in the morning or stay out late at night because the afternoon sun is too bright for good pictures. When I am in a photography studio, I can control the light. Even then the process takes a lot of time. I might spend hours taking hundreds of pictures of the same thing just to get the lighting right. A good photographer also has to know how to use the equipment and how to get good 15 final results. This is not easy! Today’s cameras are very complex and there are lots of choices. Because I use both digital and film cameras, I have to know how to use the computer and how to work in a “darkroom.” A “darkroom” is just that—a dark room where I can work with film without exposing it to light. I use special chemicals and papers to print photos. Being a photographer is not always easy, but I enjoy it. There are so many things to take 20 pictures of and so many different angles! In many ways, being a good photographer is like being a good painter. Both must have a good eye for subjects, use the right lighting, and understand the tools and techniques.

Have you ever been to Ponce? If you have, you know there are lots of interesting places to go. Most tourists visit downtown during the day. In the evening, people like to walk along the boardwalk. The best place in Ponce, though, is the Parque de Bombas. If Ponce is the Pearl of

Bombas. Over time, the building has grown and changed. The building was first used as an exhibition hall for the agricultural fair in 1882. The parts of the Parque de Bombas that are Moorish in design were built at that time. Moorish design, named after Muslims living in Spain, used arches shaped liked horseshoes and fancy carvings. A year after it was built, the building became a firehouse. Tourists can still see old fire trucks inside. The building became a museum in 1990. The Parque de Bombas is most beautiful when the sun is setting. The red horizontal stripes of the building slowly fade into the black ones. Then the lights come on and make the building twinkle. On Sunday evenings, the municipal band plays for free. So, if you ever visit Ponce, try to see the Parque de Bombas at sunset on Sunday. I have lived in Ponce all my life, but I still remember the first time I

visited the Parque de Bombas. I was very young. My mother, father, older brother, and I all went downtown. It was such a hot day. In the afternoon, we stopped for ice cream at King’s Cream and stared at the Parque de Bombas. It was the best coconut ice cream I have ever tasted. I was so excited when we went inside and I saw the fire trucks in the Parque de

Bombas! I will never forget that day. I am very lucky to live in a city whose center is a national treasure. There are many interesting places to see in Ponce. The best place, though, is the Parque de Bombas—it is our city’s jewel.
