“Climate change: The solution is YOU” F.E.C. SANTO TOMÁS DE AQUINO –LA MILAGROSA Tomelloso - SPAIN MOBILITY 19TH-22ND OCTOBER 2009

CLIMATE CHANGE : THE SOLUTION IS YOU The first mobility of the Lifelong Learning Programme Comenius:

took place in Tomelloso, Ciudad Real ( Spain), from 19th to 23rd October. In this project teachers and students from Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Lithuania , Greece and Spain carried out different activities which had to do with local and regional environmental issues in Tomelloso and in Castilla La Mancha. We worked about two main points: Water and renewable Energy.; we attended to some workshops and talks related to environment and other subjects involved in the project. In this first meeting all the partners brought their presentations about their countries and their schools, we all drew up a plan for the first year of partnership with the roles and tasks for each countryschool..

MONDAY 19TH Teachers and students from visiting countries arrived at Tomelloso and participated in the Greet Session , they were welcomed by parents, school staff as well as , Local and Regional Authorities . All of them were very concern about the main effect of climate change and the impact of it on our lives.

TUESDAY 20TH Each school shows its own presentation about school life, traditions and customs. Both students and teachers participate as viewers and actors along these activities

. After the break we had the opportunity to see an Exhibition and Workshop on ” La Mancha Wetlands” This lecture was given by three biologists from the regional government . They showed the importance of Flora, Fauna Environmental problems and the future of wetlands in Castilla La Mancha.

Before lunch we had a working session about the main objectives of the project.

The schools will participate equivalent in the project, with the coordinator who will ensure the active involvement of all. During this meeting all partners drew up a plan with a detailed reference to the roles and tasks of each. The distribution of tasks between the cooperating schools was made according to the peculiarities of each school involving pupils and teachers. Each partner will set up a group of pupils who will focus on an area referring to climate change. In the next meeting , in Turkey, the work and the actions of pupils will be presented. This will be collected by using various means such as CDs, Dvds, booklets etc. When they return to their own country, this will also be presented in their school. The issues are : • • • • • • •

Water. air. environment and health . renewable sources of energy Reduce, Reuse, Recycle . threat of species by climate change . Ozone holes and cosmic rays . Protect and conserve forest worldwide.

In Turkey as well, each school will present three logos for the project , the best one will be chosen as image for the partnership. In the evening we had a touristic visit around Tomelloso: The Antonio López Torres Municipal Museum, located in Tomelloso, houses a monographic collection of the works of the painter Antonio López Torres (1902-1987), native of the area and uncle of the famous painter Antonio López García, a little known artist who, faithful to the idea of realism, always kept to the margins of the exhibitions and vanguards. Museo del Carro y aperos de labranza, where you can see the typical building used by the farmers as shelters when they went to work in the country for a long time. You can see as well a long list of farming implements very useful a long time ago. Cooperativa Virgen de las Viñas, The Winery was founded in 1961 by 17 small-scale local farmers and has undergone continual growth and improvements since that time, and currently it has almost 2,000 partners who collectively have 23,000 hectares of vineyards, which guarantees the excellent quality of the wines. There is an average production of over 150 million litres of wine and must each year.

WEDNESDAY 21ST

We started the day with an exposition about water carried out at school a few years ago about rivers diversion, called ”as CLEAR AS crystal WATER” by Maths teacher Javier Martín . At the end of this session this teacher showed how it is possible to generate sound from a crystal cup filled with different quantities of water, so that with a determined number of them you can build a water music instrument.

After this, we started a journey trip to Ruidera Lakes The Ruidera Lakes are located along the river Pinilla Guadiana in stages between one and another, which in some places for shortcuts and impressive tufa is formed, these gaps are formed by natural barriers of porous rocks due to leaks that have been formed over thousands of years. We saw a permanent exhibition about Ruidera Water, Landscape” and finally , we took a 13 km journey along the lakes.

In the afternoon we visited a solar power station in Tomelloso, this solar farm is an electricity generating compound which uses Solar Photovoltaic Technology . It became true thanks to the collaboration of three local companies. It is located in a rural terrain near Tomelloso . It ’s got equivalent generates power for 45 homes . We were shown a presentation about how it works before going to the farm.

In the evening we had a working session where we finally established the working objectives for this year long and the main points to work in Turkey. We approved to work on a platform where all the works should be uploaded. This platform should be for teachers and students.

THURSDAY 22ND We visited Toledo which is a city known as MOSAIC OF CULTURES AND CIVILIZATIONS. When we arrived the Regional Authorities welcomed us and said the great opportunity this COMENIUS had given us not only to practice a language but also to know about other cultures and to meet people all over Europe.

Spanish-Jewish art in El Tránsito synagogue. This is one of the most important examples of Spanish-Jewish art in existence. It was built in the 14th century.

The El Tránsito synagogue is the common name for the synagogue of Samuel ha-Leví, and is the most important example of Spanish-Jewish art in existence. It was built in the 14th century. It is decorated with Mudéjar elements and beautiful geometric and floral motifs and inscriptions in Arabic and Hebrew.

There, we could see Toledo Cathedral An excellent example of Spanish Gothic art. The temple dates back many centuries, but has only existed as a Christian church since the nineteenth century. The temple was actually built on top of a Muslim mosque

Sadly, we could not go into the mosque of “El Cristo de la Luz” as it was being rebuilt, but we learned some legends about it and the city itself.

We spent a spent a wonderful day in this historical city ; we had even time to buy presents and gifts to remember our visit to Toledo.!!!

As usual , late in the evening , we had dinner all together . It was an unforgettable night , we ate traditional meals, drinks and we danced traditional Greek dances.

FRIDAY 23RD Early in the morning We started our journey to Madrid Airport to come back home but, even though some fortunate countries had time to spend a lovely sunny day in Madrid and its surroundings.
