Course overview This is a continuation of First Year Indonesian-1/INDO 1010. You will work on Lessons 11 through 17. You will prepare each lesson at home and learn the colloquial forms. In class, we will read a text of the same topic in formal Indonesian. We will also discuss and work on the grammar in class. There are four readings in these lessons. You could read them on your own with the help of the vocabulary list accompanying each reading. You could also translate one of them into English, if you wish, to earn additional grade. We will discuss the reading and the grammatical aspect of the reading in class. I will post the handouts for each lesson in http://sudarsih-bahasaindonesia.blogspot.com/. Please print them out beforehand to bring to class. If you miss a class, you are responsible to contact one of your classmates to make sure you catch up on the class notes. More than three missed classes will result in 3% drop of the final grade.

Homework and class participation (25%) Homework will be graded according to the scale of 1 to 100, based on spellings, organization of ideas, vocabulary, and grammar. Students may choose to resubmit the homework after it is graded (the deadline is the following Monday after you get it back). The maximum grade for the resubmission is 99. The emphasis is on your writing ability. Your writing should be at least two pages, double space. Homework is due by 5 PM every Monday on http://www.pdfcoke.com/. If you submit it during the week after the deadline, your grade will be reduced up to 25% (5% off for each day after the deadline). I do not accept homework on email. Please always include the following in your homework: PR Nomer: Nama: Tanggal: And if you resubmit your homework, please include this after the title (Pembetulan). Class participation is significant. You are expected to actively participate in the class interaction. If for some reason you miss these activities, you cannot reasonably make them up. As a result, if you do not participate regularly you should expect to receive lower grades in the course. And if you miss more than the equivalent of two weeks of class you should consider withdrawing and taking the class in the future semester. If you have any problems in speaking in front of class, please let me know, so that we could find a way to help you. Sometimes class participation can be in the form of in-class individual and/or group work. This semester will have visitors in our class. This will give you a chance to practice listening and speaking. 5 biweekly tests (35%) These biweekly tests will be based on the lessons that are discussed in class. The emphasis is on reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. You should not have difficulties with these tests if you attend the class on regular basis and participate in the class activities as well as do the assignments. Class activities (20%) Each student will lead two class activities in Indonesian during the semester. The activities are free in form and should be done orally. Any media or realia can be used for the 2
activities as long as only Indonesian is used. Should you need a videocassette, a VCR, a computer, or a CD/tape player, please let me know so I could make a reservation for it. You are responsible to provide the vocabulary that you use in your activity to the class. You have to submit this list of vocabulary and a written version of your activity. The objective of this class activity is to practice your Indonesian in an informal setting, while you engage your classmates in an informal interaction during the activity. Written final project (20%) For the final exam in this class, we will do a final project. You will have six weeks to complete this project. Choose one topic of your interest to research about Indonesia. For example, you can do a small research on geography, the people, the cultures, the foods, the natural resources, the music, the dances, or many others. Every week you will submit the write up of your research in Indonesian. Please include in your write up: your name, the date, the resources, and the new vocabulary that you use. This project is entirely in Indonesian. At the end of the semester, each of you will present your project in class. To help your classmates learn the new vocabulary that you use in your project, you will need to provide a vocabulary list for them. Please have them in hardcopy. You may choose to submit your final project in hardcopy, or if you use multimedia, post it on http://www.slideshare.net/. Please check the syllabus for deadlines.
Additional information The Indonesian program will participate in the following cultural events on campus: Asia Day, March 7, 2009 Your presentation on this event will count as one of the class actitivies. Asian Language Night, April 7, 2009 The ALC Language Night is a department event held near the end of the Spring term. Students from all language programs in the department are encouraged to participate. Typically, participation involves presentation of songs, skits, speeches, recitations, or other demonstrations of the language being studied. Such presentations may be undertaken either in groups or individually, and will be organized with the assistance of the Instructor. Participation in the event will be credited as part of class participation.
