Dear Governor Pataki:

This letter is a request the scheduling ofa meeting with you and Bob Mendenhall ofIBM's Educational Division, Eduquest, to discuss a potential partnership between IBM and the State to benefit the children of the State by enhancing their education with the use of technology.

IBM EduQuest is the IBM business unit that provides educational technology solutions to K-12

and the world s largest provider of such solutions. They are presently working with the US Dept. I

of Education to develop technology plans for K-12 . They are also interested in developing a partnership with NYS to assist the State in bringing this technology to our schools and NYS back to the Number One position in educating our children. There are a number of motivating factors for rEM to do this including the fact that IBM is one of the State's largest employers and draws heavily from the talent pool created by NY educational institutions. IBM also believes that NYS is very aware of the fact that business growth is tied to educational initiatives.

Bob Mendenhall is the General Manager of IBM EduQuest and responsible for all aspects of the operation . He was the founder and CEO of Wicat Systems until it was acquired by Josten's Learning Systems when he was made part of their Executive Board. He joined IBM as EduQuest's General Manager over one year ago.

The objective ofthis partnership would be to work with the State in meeting the overall educational objectives ofthe Administration by providing to the children of New York the best educa-

tion in the country and in doing so, fully prepare them to meet the challenges of the world we

!I

live in. Understanding your deep commitment in this area, I believe that this meeting will be of value.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response and trust that if you have any further questions you will not hesitate to contact me.
