How to be a Good Teacher Triumphant Institute of Management Education Pvt. Ltd.

Why this session? ● If the students do not study, what can I do? ● We should not admit students who are not focussed and motivated! ● I can only teach in this way, I can’t change! ● I teach them whatever I know! If they don’t ask any questions, what can I do? ● If students are demotivated due to bad scores, what can I do?

● Only a few teachers are born, rest are made!

Pre-requisites ● Depth & breadth of Knowledge about the subject ● Good Communication Skills ● Knowledge of exam patterns and questions relating to the topic ● Last row should be able to hear you clearly ● Knowledge of how to use the board ● You should have full confidence in the course material & class structure before you start teaching A good teacher should like to teach

Basics 1 ● Reach well before the start time ● Know each student before the class ● Maintain eye contact with ALL the students ● Clean the white board before and after the class ● Check if marker pens work

Rich Curtis – the best teacher at Cornell ( 2006 ) knows name, educational background, home town, major interests and career goal of each student in his 260-strong class. Source: Businessweek – September 20, 2006

Basics 2 ● Encourage weaker students to ask questions ● Do not allow brighter students to ‘monopolise’ and influence pace of the class ● Ensure good class discipline ● Don’t automatically allow late-comers, nor allow people to leave without giving a valid reason ● Do not allow cell-phones to ring including yours! ● Do not leave class except in emergency Good teachers know that they are the conductors and the class is the orchestra. All students play different instruments and at varying proficiencies.

Basics 3 ● Do not speak in a monotone ● You can say without any problem ( once in a while ) “I don’t know”, “wish I knew”, “we need to check it: why don’t you check and report in the next class” ● Do not look at notes / book while teaching ● Nothing impresses students more than the fact that you do not need any ‘props’ ● Be well-groomed and well-dressed

Basics 4 ● First and the second class in a batch are most crucial. ● Doubts to be handled immediately in the class ● Don’t criticize / demoralise individual students ● Encourage, encourage, encourage ● Do not say you are helpless since it is ‘management policy’

What makes a good teacher ● Passion as well as reason ● Listening with ears, eyes and mind ● Willingness to learn ● Joy in sharing knowledge ● Pride in one’s craft ● S/he should know how good the class was The good teacher makes the poor student OK, the OK student good and the good student better. When our students fail, we, as teachers, too fail. ~ Marva Collins

What makes a good teacher ● A structured approach ● Solid home-work ● Ability and preparation to carry on for another two hours ● Time management – class shouldn’t be over before time ● How to make out that it was a good class? - Oh, how fast the time has flown! ● The ‘jaggery’ factor

How to Structure the class ● Prologue: check what was learnt in the last class ● Class Objective: I tell them, what we will do today ● Core: Then, I ‘deliver’ the content ● Sanity check: Periodic check for ‘reach’ ● Summary + Review: Summarise and check - if they remember - if they understood ● Give them something extra which they may not get otherwise.

KWL* Approach ● What we already Know ( Quick review to establish base-line of knowledge ) ● What we Want to Learn ( Objective & Activity ) ● What we Learned today ( Review )

What makes a good teacher Class Structure ● Flow / Organisation of the class - first thing leads to the next and so on ● Clarity ● Summarisation of key concepts ● Different level of examples ● Relevance to entrance exam – actual questions ● Plan for interaction

It’s a Performance ● Confidence ● Humour ● Relevant stories / anecdotes ● Open classroom climate - silly questions are ok - students can interrupt at any point of time ● High level of Energy & Enthusiasm ● Patience – never get irritated in the class

Do’s & Don’ts ● Every student is equally important ● Take a proactive interest in their performance - Seek out students to check progress ● Friendly but no-nonsense ● Scolding the class is ok only after the trust is built ● Don’t spoon-feed, exhort for greater effort The mediocre teacher tells.  The good teacher explains.  The superior teacher demonstrates.  The great teacher inspires.  ~ William Arthur Ward

What makes a good teacher Continuous evaluation

Those who can – do , those who can’t – teach ~ GBS There was a scholar named Fressor Whose knowledge grew lesser and lesser. It was at last so small He knew nothing at all And that got him the job of a professor.
