Cascading waterfalls. Unforgettable cliffs, canyons, beaches, and bays. “The Island of Discovery,” begs to be discovered.
Kauai History
Kauai is the oldest island of Hawaii so it seems only appropriate that British explorer Captain James Cook landed in Kauai’s Waimea Bay for the first time in 1778. Cook’s discovery of what he called the “Sandwich Isles,” named after the Earl of Sandwich, introduced Hawaii to the world. During this era of western discovery, King Kamehameha I was attempting to unify all the Hawaiian Islands under his rule. Kauai and the small, neighboring island of Niihau were the only islands to deter his efforts. Eventually, Kauai’s reigning king decided to peacefully unite with Kamehameha. The fertile soil and bountiful rainfall provided excellent conditions to cultivate taro. The plant’s edible starchy tubers were pounded into poi and became part of the staple diet of the native population. Taro plantations are still scattered across Kauai today, contributing to the island’s beautiful green fields of heart-shaped taro leaves.

Kauai Facts
• Nicknamed “The Garden Isle”, it is the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands. • The Waialua River is one of five navigable rivers in Hawaii. It drains off Waialeale Mountain, which averages 488 inches of rain per year and is considered the wettest spot on earth. • The Waimea, the Hanape’pe, the Lumahai and the Hanalei River are almost as big and quite navigable. The Hanalei River was dedicated a “national treasure” recently and is under government protection from use as a “place of business”. • Island flower and color used to represent Kauai: Mokihana (Green Berry) and purple. Legend has it, the demigod Maui pulled the island from the sea. Maui was named after this mythological being, perhaps because the shape of the island is said to resemble his head and body. But it was a man named Piilani who made the greatest impact here as the first ruler to unite all of Maui. In 1790, after a fierce battle in Iao Valley, King Kamehameha took control of Maui and made Lahaina the new capital of the unified Hawaiian Kingdom. For nearly five decades, Lahaina served as the center of government for Hawaii. Simultaneously, the town experienced a surge in its whaling industry. At the height of the whaling era (1840-1865) as many as 500 ships anchored in Lahaina’s port. Maui has many historical places of interest that shouldn’t be missed. Oahu wasn’t always the seat of power in Hawaii, influence shifted from Hawaii’s Big Island to Oahu as recently as the late 1700’s. During this era of change, King Kamehameha I unified the Hawaiian islands under one rule. In the early 1800’s, Oahu also saw an influx of western seamen, businessmen, and missionaries, forever changing the face of Hawaiian history. During this time, Kamehameha III permanently established his royal court in Honolulu. Oahu is home to numerous historic landmarks and significant points of interest that shed light on these fascinating facets of Hawaii’s recent past.

• Honolulu is the largest city in the world—at least it has the longest borders. According to the state constitution any island (or islet) not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This makes all islands within the Hawaiian Archipelago, that stretch to Midway Island (1,500 miles northwest of Hawaii) part of Honolulu. Honolulu is about 1,500 miles long or more distance than halfway across the 48 contiguous states. • Honolulu is the 11th largest metropolitan area in the nation. • Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the U.S. • The island of Oahu draws more visitors than any other to Hawaii. The youngest Island in the archipelago, Hawaii’s Big Island was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers from the Marquesas islands set foot on 1,500 years ago.
During this time of discovery, Hawaii’s Big Island was divided into separate chiefdoms and war between factions was common. In 1791, Kohala-born Kamehameha united the Big Island and went on to unify all of the Hawaiian Islands. This was the home to King Kamehameha’s court until it moved to Oahu in 1804. In 1812, Kamehameha the Great returned to his beloved Big Island where he died in 1819. In 1820, the first missionaries arrived in Kailua-Kona. Other westerners followed, introducing cattle to the island. Parker Ranch was born, becoming one of the largest cattle ranches in the country. Sugar plantations also bloomed on the Hilo side in the 20th century. Today, the Big Island remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture. Why Do It Now? Green building offers us the chance to benefit everyone: residents, owners, neighbors, local governments, regional businesses, and the local and global environment. You can make these opportunities and benefits a reality even within the budget limitations of an affordable housing project. The average additional cost of building green is approximately two percent higher than that of traditional building and is falling. Many tools are in place to support these market changes, and new policies, financial instruments, and regulatory amendments will soon make building green a mainstream practice in affordable housing. The time to build green is now. Going Green In Hawaii The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA Hawaii) has a program called Hawaii BuiltGreen™ that promotes green development and recognizes Green projects. BIA Hawaii is now with the National Association of Home Builders’ National Green Building Program (NAHB Green). NAHB Green is helping its members move the practice of green building into the mainstream. Energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, sustainable or recycled products, and indoor air quality are increasingly incorporated into the everyday process of home building.

50th Anniversary This year, Hawaii commemorates its 50th Anniversary of Statehood. On August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th State of the United States of America. Here is a quick look at the Timeline to Statehood. June 14, 1900 Congress passes the Hawai‘i Organic Act which creates the governing legislation of the Territory of Hawai‘i. The act grants citizenship to all citizens of the Republic. A distinct territorial judiciary is set up. The territorial governor and territorial secretary (akin to a lieutenant governor) are to be appointed by the president. February 11, 1919 Prince Kuhio introduces the first Hawaiian statehood bill to Congress. The bill is referred to a committee for further study. In subsequent years, this bill is followed by numerous other bills calling for Hawai‘i Statehood. Prior to 1959, none of these bills gained congressional approval. September 27, 1935 Hawai‘i’s legislature authorizes and funds the Hawai‘i Equal Rights Commission. Its exofficio chairman, Territorial Governor Joseph Poindexter, appoints the Commission’s four other members. The Commission’s purpose is to fight political discrimination against Hawai‘i. It would later be renamed “The Statehood Commission.”

of Hawaii Statehood November 5, 1940 The Statehood plebiscite required by Congress results in a 2 to 1 vote in favor of Statehood- 46,174 votes to 22,426. December 7, 1941 The Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. The outbreak of World War II interrupts the drive for Statehood as suspicions over those of Japanese ancestry are raised and the “American-ness” of the Territory of Hawai‘i is questioned. Hawai‘i is placed under martial law until 1944. November 3, 1942 Joseph Farrington, affectionately known as “Statehood Joe,” is elected as Hawai‘i’s delegate to Congress. August 15, 1945 World War II ends. 1947 The Hawai‘i Statehood Commission, successor to the Equal Rights Commission, opens a Washington D.C. office. January 7, 1948 President Harry S. Truman calls for Hawai‘i Statehood in his state of the union message. A third Congressional Statehood investigation is held in Hawai‘i for 12 days. The unanimous recommendation is immediate statehood.
November 7, 1950 The Hawai‘i State Constitution is approved by the people with a vote of 82,788 to 27,109. 1953 In the 83rd Congress, the House of Representatives pass the Hawai‘i Statehood bill, 274 to 138, for the third time; however, the Senate postpones action to 1954. March 11, 1959 The Senate passes Hawai‘i’s Statehood Bill 75 to 15. March 12, 1959 The U.S. House of Representatives passes Hawai‘i’s Statehood Bill, 323 to 89. August 21, 1959 President Eisenhower makes Hawai‘i Statehood official by signing the proclamation that welcomes Hawai‘i as the 50th state of the union. He also unveils the new fifty star flag.
