nown as the Valley Isle, Maui is the 2nd largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Maui is known for long stretches of beautiful beaches and the landmark Haleakala Crater, the House of the Sun. Maui History
Legend has it, the demigod Maui pulled the island from the sea. Maui was named after this mythological being, perhaps because the shape of the island is said to resemble his head and body. But it was a man named Piilani who made the greatest impact here as the first ruler to unite all of Maui.
Maui Facts
In 1790, after a fierce battle in Iao Valley, King Kamehameha took control of Maui and made Lahaina the new capital of the unified Hawaiian Kingdom. For nearly five decades, Lahaina served as the center of government for Hawaii. Simultaneously, the town experienced a surge in its whaling industry. At the height of the whaling era (1840-1865) as many as 500 ships anchored in Lahaina’s port.

here are not many areas yet to be discovered in Maui, but if you are looking for the road less traveled, take a 20 minute scenic drive down Kahekili Highway out of Wailuku, where you will find the charming, undeveloped area of the West Maui Mountains known as Kahakuloa. It is in this area that you will find the majestic 51 acre luxury estate known as the Seahorse Ranch. Some of Hawaii’s most beautiful panoramic views can be experienced from this estate’s living room or while lounging by the pool—the Pacific Ocean, Kahului Harbor, Haleakala Mountain and the West Maui Mountains. From the garden style master bath, one can enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean, Kahakuloa Head and the island of Molokai. Privacy is not an issue since the neighbors are a safe distance away.

The Seahorse Ranch is one of the largest privately owned properties in the Kahakuloa area. Kahakuloa Village is nestled between towering peaks and a landmark known as Kahakuloa Head. Kahakuloa Head is 636 feet high and is historically known for King Kahekili’s Leap. In the mid-1700’s, Maui’s last independent ruler, King Kahekili, often frequented the area of Kahakuloa and legend says that in the early mornings, the King would climb up the hill and “leap” into the ocean from about the 200 foot height. In the early days of the Seahorse Ranch, there were over two dozen horses in residence that greeted guests on a daily basis as they arrived for leisurely trail rides into the mountains. Afterwards, guests would be entertained by the owner with BBQ and pool parties. The trail rides and horses have gone away, but the 4 stall horse stable, tack room and large fenced arena are still there just waiting for new occupants.
Today, the Seahorse Ranch has moved into farming. There are five acres under cultivation in a leased partnership with a local farmer. Future plans include placing another ten acres into farming production. Although the ranch is part of a private water company, it has recently directly connected to the Makamaka’ole Stream for free agriculture water. The first five acres of cultivation are already producing an income. Should new owners decide to subdivide the property, they will have a head start as there are additional water meters already belonging to the property. There are currently 16 listed properties in Maui with more than 10 acres of land and only 4 of them have more than 51 acres of land to offer. Out of all 4, it is only the Seahorse Ranch that is conveniently located close to Wailuku and Kahului Airport, while still offering much privacy. The Hawaiians, when speaking about the islands, say, “Maui No Ka Oi”, (“Maui Is The Best”). And, on West Maui, Ka’anapali Beach is rated as one of the 10 best of world-renowned beaches.

istorically, West Maui has been a special area endeared by Hawaiian Kings and Queens. Hawaiian warriors were battle-trained on West Maui shores. About sixty years ago the United States Marine Corps personnel were conducting practice landings on a beach on West Maui now known as Black Rock. Ralph L. Hoyle, a Marine in training, saw the beauty of the area and allowed himself to dream of how wonderful it would be if it were his. The landing practices ended, World War II ended and his life continued with education, marriage, success in business, but his Maui dream never faded. He came back to West Maui around l960 and was able to purchase the land of his dreams—10.2 acres in the area now known as Ka’anapali Beach; the land is now held in the Hoyle Trust. In subsequent years, he developed what is now known as the Maui Eldorado Resort, a low-rise condominium complex. In its 204 units, all with central air-conditioning, one can find studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, all along the Royal Ka’anapali Golf Course and near the ocean. As part of the development, a four-level garage was built to accommodate owners and renters. The grounds were landscaped and three swimming pools were built for relaxation and enjoyment. In addition, a private beach cabana was constructed for use by Maui Eldorado Resort owners and guests. If you are in the market for a primary home, a vacation home, a rental unit or an investment property in Maui, look into Maui Eldorado Resort. Many of the units at the Maui Eldorado Resort are now occupied by owners as full time homes, some are used as long-term or vacation rentals and some are held as investment property. One can watch golfers play down the fairway, but may be distracted at times by a great humpback whale spotted offshore, spouting or surfacing in the ocean just past the beach-side cabana. The cabana is an easy walk from the units, or a call to the lobby for a golf cart shuttle ride to the cabana. The lobby includes front desk service for owners and guests, and an activities desk and an on-site convenience store. During this time, Kamehameha III permanently established his royal court in Honolulu.

• Honolulu is the largest city in the world—at least it has the longest borders. According to the state constitution any island (or islet) not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. Honolulu is about 1,500 miles long or more distance than halfway across the 48 contiguous states. • Honolulu is the 11th largest metropolitan area in the nation. • Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the U.S. • The island of Oahu draws more visitors than any other to Hawaii. awaii’s Big Island isn’t just big, it’s still growing. Famous for the active Kilauea volcano, Hawaii’s Big Island is home to a list of fascinating anomalies. Eleven different climate zones generate everything from lush rain forests to arid deserts, black sand beaches to snow-capped mountaintops. The Big Island is Hawaii’s biggest playground.
Hawaii History
The youngest Island in the archipelago, Hawaii’s Big Island was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers from the Marquesas islands set foot on 1,500 years ago. In 1778, Captain Cook arrived on Kauai opening the door to an influx of westerners. Only a year later on the Big Island, warriors at Kealakekua Bay killed Cook after a contentious chain of events. During this time of discovery, Hawaii’s Big Island was divided into separate chiefdoms and war between factions was common. In 1791, Kohala-born Kamehameha united the Big Island and went on to unify all of the Hawaiian Islands. This was the home to King Kamehameha’s court until it moved to Oahu in 1804. In 1812, Kamehameha the Great returned to his beloved Big Island where he died in 1819. In 1820, the first missionaries arrived in Kailua-Kona. Other westerners followed, introducing cattle to the island. Parker Ranch was born, becoming one of the largest cattle ranches in the country. Sugar plantations also bloomed on the Hilo side in the 20th century. Today, the Big Island remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture. Throughout its modernization, one ancient Hawaiian god is believed to be alive and well here. Pele,
the volcano goddess, has settled in Kilauea Volcano after moving south along the island chain. She continues to display her power today, keeping Kilauea in a constant state of eruption, since 1983.

AT A GLANCE | The Penthouse: Kona Bali Kai’s Hidden Gem
Hidden behind an unassuming tan façade, midway between Kailua Village and the Keauhou Resort on Alii Drive on the Big Island, lies an oceanfront condotel complex called Kona Bali Kai. And, hidden on the fourth floor of this complex is a not so unassuming penthouse aka “The Penthouse”.

uilt in 1976 on approximately 5 acres of land, the Kona Bali Kai complex is comprised of seven buildings straddling both the mauka and makai sides of Alii Drive. There are wide range of units from studios to three-bedroom, but there is only one 4-bedroom oceanfront unit—The Penthouse. The expansive dining and living room areas have open-beam ceilings making the rooms visually larger and the crown molding near the ceiling adds a touch of elegance. The double-wide lanai is over 40-foot long and has two sets of glass sliding door that open and offer cool ocean breezes. An ocean-side area view of the popular Living Stones Church and partial view of the Banyans surf break are at your disposal. Below are many tidal pools. You are surely to spot a sea turtle or two basking in the warm shiny blue waters. Glance farther out and you may see a frolicking school of dolphins speeding by and, in the winter, you may see spouting and breaching whales—a sight that will surely leave you speechless!

Kauai History
Kauai is the oldest island of Hawaii so it seems only appropriate that British explorer Captain James Cook landed in Kauai’s Waimea Bay for the first time in 1778. Cook’s discovery of what he called the “Sandwich Isles,” named after the Earl of Sandwich, introduced Hawaii to the world. During this era of western discovery, King Kamehameha I was attempting to unify all the Hawaiian Islands under his rule. Kauai and the small, neighboring island of Niihau were the only islands to deter his efforts. Eventually, Kauai’s reigning king decided to peacefully unite with Kamehameha. The fertile soil and bountiful rainfall provided excellent conditions to cultivate taro. The plant’s edible starchy tubers were pounded into poi and became part of the staple diet of the native population. Taro plantations are still scattered across Kauai today, contributing to the island’s beautiful green fields of heartshaped taro leaves.

• Nicknamed “The Garden Isle”, it is the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands. • The Waialua River is one of five navigable rivers in Hawaii. It drains off Waialeale Mountain, which averages 488 inches of rain per year and is considered the wettest spot on earth. • The Waimea, the Hanape’pe, the Lumahai and the Hanalei River are almost as big and quite navigable.
