Applying for accommodation • Applications go to your college’s accommodation office • Most colleges can offer accommodation to the great majority of their first-year undergraduates; some guarantee it • Firm unconditional offers allocated early summer, firm conditional offers in August, insurance offers in September

Residents • Majority are first-year undergraduates • 20 – 25% return for a second year • Approximately 10% postgraduates

Facilities

Based on Connaught Hall but most halls have similar facilities

• Fully catered; rooms cleaned weekly, common areas daily • Common rooms, bar, library, fitness room, music room with upright piano, computer room, private courtyard garden • Bathrooms shared between 16-20 residents (3 showers & toilets); washbasin in every room • 24-hour reception and CCTV with on-call duty officer 24/7 • Coin-op laundrette, vending machines, microwaves & fridges • Telephone & internet connection in every room www.london.ac.uk / halls

Bursar’s staff • Manage hall buildings & finances • Health & safety, catering, housekeeping, maintenance, security, reception desk • Collect fees • Facilities Committee chaired by Vice-Warden allows feedback from residents on all these services www.london.ac.uk / halls

Warden’s team • Warden, Vice-Warden, and Senior Members: part-time resident staff, usually academics or postgraduate students • Welfare of Hall residents – pastoral care

• Community and hall social life • Discipline in the Hall

Resident’s Club / Junior Common Room (JCR) • Every hall has an elected committee of residents • Social events, movie nights, and parties • Sports competitions in the hall and between halls

Making friends (1) • Introduce yourself to your immediate neighbours • If somebody is brave enough to knock on your door and introduce themselves, make them a cup of tea • Go to dinner as often as you can – meal times are important • Sit with people and introduce yourself

Making friends (2) • Look for signs about the JCR and think about getting elected • Get involved in parties & events in Hall

• Use the TV rooms instead of watching TV in your room • Find out who is on the Warden's team and get to know them

Studying • Balance work and play

• An environment where you can study and sleep when you want, but opportunities to socialise and have fun as well • Quiet time 11 pm to 7 am
