Date: October 11, 2008 Press release by Generation Wave about the arrest of eight youths Our beloved people of Burma, courageous brothers and sisters from various states, divisions and ethnicities throughout the nation, In the late afternoon of October 9 and the morning of October 10, SPDC authorities arrested eight youths, including four members of Generation Wave, from a residences in South Okkalapa Township in Rangoon city. The arrested Generation Wave members are Ko Khine Mon (a) Ko Nyein Chan, Ye Thu Ko (a) Nyi Nyi, Zin Min Aung, and Aung Paing. The other four people taken away by the authorities are family members and visitors who were in the house at the time of the arrest. U Hla Shwe, the father of Ko Khine Mon, is already behind bars due to his political involvement. These arrests are violations of article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – freedom of expression and organizing, article 20 – freedom of peaceful assembly and association, and of chapter one and eight of the new national law, relating to freedom of expression, thoughts, and peaceful organizing, enacted and released by the national convening commission and introduced to the UN human rights special rapporteur Mr. Quintana on his recent visit to Burma. Therefore, we the members of Generation Wave strongly urge the Burmese authorities to abide to their own laws and to immediately halt unlawful arrests and to unconditionally release all political prisoners. All these arrests and threats from the authorities will not stop our non-violent protests. Instead, we hereby announce that we will increase our actions of defiance against the repression of the military dictatorship in Burma. Moreover, we strongly encourage the authorities to choose peaceful ways of solving the nation’s problems, instead of arresting and torturing innocent youths who use non-violent means to raise their concerns about the situation in the country.
