Animist Exodus, Adam Laerkesen’s inaugural exhibition with ATG, showcases an eclectic mix of evocative sculptural works that inspire the imaginative and unfamiliar. Richly flocked branches sway in a non-existent breeze, a cheeky crowned monkey proudly sits on a human skull, whilst nothing is expected – equally, nothing comes as a surprise.
Poetic and mystical these sculptures embody hauntingly striking qualities that can steal your breath by the power of their presence. Tracey Clement of the age expressed ‘in Laerkesen’s sculptures the eerie theatricality of American art-star Matthew Barney meets the understated eloquence of Australia’s Hossein Valamanesh’ Perhaps the power of Laerkesen’s work lies in his ability to extract from his viewers their own poetic capabilities. Laerkesen explains that ‘the work itself has an open ended quality allowing the viewer to imbue their own poetry and imagination into it.’ Indeed poetry and imagination resonates in Animist Exodus an exhibition experience that can only be described as lyrical in mood, sound in method and both charismatic and arresting in its staging.
