Philippine Timeline 1564 Filipinos had their first taste of Mexican chili and corn during the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. In return, Mexico's people had their initial taste of tamarind, Manila mango and a Filipino banana called racatan or lakatan. Founded in 1595 by Spaniards, the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines is older than Harvard and is the oldest university in Asia. University of Santo Tomas in Manila, established in 1611, is Asia's second oldest.

1897 The Tejeros Convention (alternate names include Tejeros Assembly and Tejeros Congress) was the meeting held between the Magdiwangand Magdalo factions of the Katipunan at San Francisco de Malabon, Cavite which on March 22, 1897. This is the first presidential and vice presidential elections in Philippine history, although only the Katipuneros (members of the Katipunan) and not the general
populace were able to take part. Bonifacio then became a fugitive of the Revolutionary Movement. Bonifacio fled to the Morong and was tried in absentia. He was found to be guilty of treason and was sentenced to die. An arresting party caught up with him at Cavite where he was arrested. Although Aguinaldo wanted to simply banish Bonifacio instead of executing him, Bonifacio and his brother Procopio were shot by firing squad onMay 10, 1897 at Maragondon, Cavite.

Abelardo Aguilar, a Filipino scientist, sent some soil samples to his employer Eli Lilly in 1949. Eli Lilly’s research team, led by J. M. McGuire, managed to isolate Erythromycin from the metabolic products of a strain of Streptomyces erythreus (designation changed to "Saccharopolyspora erythraea") found in the samples. Lilly filed for patent protection of the compound and U.S. patent 2,653,899 was granted in 1953. The product was launched commercially in 1952 under the brand name Ilosone (after the Philippine region of Iloilo where it was originally collected from). Erythromycin was formerly also called Ilotycin.
1999 Latina-American pop star Christina Aguilera lost to Filipina vocalist Josephine Roberto aka Banig during the International Star Search years ago. In a mid-1999 MTV chat, she said that competing against someone of Banig's age was "not fair."
