NEWS AND NOTES FROM PEACE WITH CHRIST 1412 W. Swallow Road Fort Collins, CO 80526 970-226-4721 Pastor Ralph Patrick www.pwchrist-fc.org

October 18, 2009 Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

WELCOME TO PEACE WITH CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH! We give thanks to God that you are joining us today! Many of our guests are seeking a home church where they can be part of the Fellowship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace with Christ is a congregation that is a family not an “organization”. We are small enough to allow people to know each other by name, and yet large enough to offer opportunities for growth and service. What we “specialize” in is not programs or productions, but simply The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus. Christ, His Word, and the Cross are what provide the foundation for faith and ministry. If you are interested in learning more about Peace With Christ Lutheran Church, please call the church office at 226-4721. Pastor Patrick would welcome the opportunity to visit with you personally.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD LARGE CATECHISM THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Here you have the meaning of the true honor and worship of God, which pleases God, and which He commands under penalty of eternal wrath. The heart knows no other comfort or confidence than in Him. It must not allow itself to be torn from Him. But, for Him, it must risk and disregard everything upon earth. On the other hand, you can easily see and sense how the world practices only false worship and idolatry. For no people have ever been so corrupt that they did not begin and continue some divine worship. Everyone has set up as his special god whatever he looked to for blessings, help, and comfort. For example, the heathen who put their trust in power and dominion elevated Jupiter as the supreme god. Others, who were bent on riches, happiness, or pleasure, and a life of ease, elevated Hercules, Mercury, Venus, or other gods. Pregnant women elevated Diana or Lucina, and so on. So everyone made his god that interest to which his heart was inclined. So even in the mind of the heathen to have a god means to trust and believe. But their error is this: their trust is false and wrong. For their trust is not placed in the only God, beside whom there is truly no God in heaven or upon earth [Isaiah 44:6]. Therefore, the heathen really make their self-invented notions and dreams of God an idol. Ultimately, they put their trust in that which is nothing. (paragraphs 16-20)

Prayer and Study Date: October 18 - October 24

Luther Quote: “Only faith apprehends the promise, believes the assurance God gives, and extends the hand to accept what God is offering. This work is peculiar to faith alone. Love, hope, and patience are concerned about other matters. They have other areas in which they maintain themselves; for they do not embrace the promise but carry out the commands.”

Venezuela — October 16-30 The Lutheran Church of Venezuela (ILV) currently has 19 pastors and 19 congregations—but is hoping to train many more pastors and plant many more congregations in the years to come.

11

Daily Prayers: Sunday: For the 19 congregations of the ILV, as their members worship together, learn and serve together, and bear witness to the Gospel of Christ in their communities.

Monday: With thanksgiving at the end of 2008, with the ordination of 11 new pastors in a few months, the ILV now has one pastor for each of its 19 congregations! Praise God for providing these shepherds to teach and lead His sheep.

Tuesday: For the new missions throughout Venezuela. May these new outposts of preaching faith in Jesus alone reach many who do not yet have faith in Christ alone as their Savior, and if it’s the Lord’s will, become new ILV congregations. Wednesday: For the theological education by extension program, Juan de Frias, through which new pastors and lay leaders are trained in the ILV. Give thanks for the 50-plus pastors that the Juan de Frias program has trained over the years.

Thursday: For the students currently studying towards becoming pastors through Juan de Frias—may they grow in their knowledge and love of the Lord in their hearts, souls, and minds. Pray that new students would be identified for the coming year and that the program would remain strong.

Friday: For the 50-plus women completing deaconess studies through the Juan de Frias program in their congregations and at intensive courses held throughout the country.

Saturday: For the seven vicars who are completing their vicarages during 2009. Ask the Lord to teach them much about godly leadership through their ministry and ongoing education during their vicarages, and that He would provide direction for the future.
