INDRANI ANANDA: Songs of science fantasy TONY MADGEWICK: Flamenco guitar

Our folk clubs are supported in Brighton by a number of people; traditional singers and contemporary folk singers. We enjoy performances from a number of superb singer songwriters. Songs from various supporters will feature in due course. Anyone attracted to these pages from outside folk should check other folk club pages as there are some excellent artists doing the same as us around Britain - AND CRUCIALLY writing new songs which put the pop (including popular/MOR/country) world to shame (in

my humble opinion...) This legendry Brighton Institution which has provided folkies with earworms since 1980 is happy for you to get involved if you want just check http://www.myspace.com/fyviesfolk for details.

Bongo Fury is a Drum and Percussion workshop led by James Carr and Polly Morton. We offer the opportunity to come

and learn to play a wide range of rhythms from across the world; from Ghana to South America to Morocco and back to the UK. The drums and percussion are mostly from West Africa including the famous warm sounding Kpanlogo Drums from Ghana as well as the deep bass sounding Drums; the Dun Duns! Based in Brighton we offer an open community music session catering for people of all ages and abilities. This is your chance to give it some big ones and play your heart out. Come and join the Bongo Fury.

Nihavend is a London-based group performing classical Ottoman/Turkish music since 1999. It is the only group in Britain performing this particular genre of the maqam music which has evolved over the centuries as the art music around the Ottoman Palace in Istanbul, drawing in influences from various music cultures living in the region, namely Greek (Byzantian), Armenian, Jewish, Arabic, Persian as well as Turkish. The main aim of Nihavend ensemble is to promote this invaluable music tradition through presenting fine examples of it in live performances to audiences here in Britain. The group has performed in numerous venues including the South Bank Centre. Over the past ten years, the group has built an extensive repertoire consisting of works in variety of forms and makams composed by composers from different periods ranging from 16th to 20th century. The content of each concert is

determined by the occasion, the expected audience and other factors such as the composition of the group at the time. What is common in each programme, however, is that utmost attention and effort is given in selecting the pieces from the classical repertoire and performing them in the authentic,

traditional style.

SOAS Ad Hoc Rebetiko Band, a 15 strong band featuring powerful bouzouki playing, artful percussion and sublimely soulful singing. A music of the underworld. The urban blues of the old port areas of Greece. Songs of prison,

hashish and love; howls of pain, pride and passion. Rebetiko is the rebel music of Greece. And more than a hint of Sufi in its modes and music. It is a Byzantine blend of the Turkish rhythms brought with them by the immigrant Greeks uprooted from their homes in Asia Minor with the contemporary Greek music of the twenties and thirties. Soul stuff in 9/8

rhythms.

BAKK LAMP FALL is a unique group of musicians that are creating world roots music. they bust out the african style of drumming, funky guitar, powerful vocals, and flute licks. The Modern Exposition We play our tunes they way they want us to. We belong to no niche although you can hear the feint echoes of the Andes, the Mediterranean, the emerald isle and many other exotic places in our music. We do not know why this is, nor do we ask. We are a predominantly instrumental band, although we occasionally find ourselves chanting, whispering and muttering in the beautiful language, Esperanto. Describing themselves as a 21century string band, you won’t want to miss this.

Sumarian Jyngs as they say are who they are! Just the list and style of their associated acts should whet your appetite. The band have this to say, what a story, what a past, what a sound! In their words Mr Cartwright sax Kyng met Andy bass Kyng and were parts of The Red Snappers (amongst others) back in bad ol Berlin when the wall kept their noise in. Via musics, cities and seas they settled independently on Brighton where….. Ross vocalizing n guitar Kyng was the new catalyst, looming n growlin' up from out of the Virginia swamps, cool and slow with plenty of precision, with a

back beat narrow and hard to master (sorry Jim)…….well actually it was Brighton and from his involvement in experimental rock duo Original Gravity and other south coast mysterious science musics. Monty Oxymoron keyboards n sometimes drums n sometimes everything else Kyng key boarding in the Damned and then also alongside Captain Sensible, with one of the great festival bands: Dr Space Toad Experience. So many projects, so much material and now also star of YouTube. Hi Cliff effects n lights the glue and recordist Kyng, man mountain, hear his flanging, and feel the beat of his bodhran Also performing as trance electro man Xanthus. Producing and recording is his other game. His is to add all the extra joy and fizz to the live performances, lending The Kyngs their unique retro lazer light psychedelic live edge. Mickey guitars n fuzzes Kyng history shows him in The Pioneers with John Entwistle, with Steve Hyams of Mott The Hoople, Tim Rose, Mick Flynn, The Dubliners, Sisters Of Mercy, Phil Manzanera, The Wiseguys and so many

varied others, a list too long. Richard drummer n percussives Kyng and also of Space Ritual and Inner City Unit with Nik Turner (Hawkwind), Here And Now, House Of Thandoy, The Dharma Bums, Gong, Daevid Allen's tea maker, drummer and hat wearer, again others and a list too long. The Hobbit accordian Kyng the lyrical Shires dawg, pumping and contracting, textural, soundtrack, undercurrent of the Sumerian Kyngs live sound. Honkin Stu harmonicas Kyng, a regular on the Brighton music scene playing with many and various. Wonderfully haunting, plaintive and grooving, topping off with staccato chugs and filling his way through live sets…and when the mood takes, dancin and a prancin with the crowd....................... AND ROSS SAYS................. AS I WAS SAYING BEFORE YOU SPOKE IN YONGO, ZOOMER SHANDY WAS DOWN THE MARLBOROUGH ON A DUSKY SUMMERS EVE, WHEREPON MONTY OXYMORON WAS PLAYING THE STAGE WITH STAGHEAD HEELS. ZOOMER STRODE SHARPISH UP TO THE NIGHT'S

PROMOTER AND SAID WITHOUT AS MUCH AS HOWS YOUR UNKLE - " MY BAND MUST PLAY HERE! ON THE NEXT REAL MUSIC NIGHT..."WHAT'S THE BAND CALLED?" SPOKE MKAY. " ZOOMER WAS A NANO-SECOND DUMBFOUNDED, COZ HE HAD NO NAME, AND COME TO THAT NO BAND NEITHER. "THE SUMERIAN KYNGS" HE BLURTED...AS IF THAT WAS REASON FOR EVERYTHING. "WOW - OKAY WE BOOK YOU SAID MKAY, "YOU'RE ON IN FOUR WEEKS!" AT THAT POINT AS YOU KNOW ZOOMER RUSHED AROUND THE AUDIENCE GETTING HIM HIS BAND TOGETHER, AND IN TWO DAYS HE HAD THE FULL METAL JACKET WITH JENNER ON DRUMS WHOM HE NEARLY MOWED DOWN ON THE SIDEWALK NR PRESTON CIRCUS. "DO YOU WANT TO PLAY DRUMS FOR THE SUMERIAN KYNGS MAC?" "SURE; LIKE I HAVE A CHOICE!" THEREFORE WE ARE WHO WE ARE, AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SWAMP JAZZ RIGHT? HIS REAL NAME IS ZOOMER SHANDY THE THIRD.
