FRATERNITY WHAT IS FRATERNITY?

is an organization, a society, or a club of men associated together for various religious or secular aims.Fraternity in the Western concept developed in the Christian context, notably with the religious orders in the Catholic Church during theMiddle Ages. The concept was eventually further extended with the middle age guilds, followed by the early modern formation of gentlemen's clubs, freemasons, odd fellows, student fraternities, and fraternal service organizations.Members are occasionally referred to as a brother or – usually in religious context – Frater or Friar. Today, connotations of fraternities vary according to context including companionships and brotherhoods dedicated to the religious, intellectual, academic, physical, or social pursuits of its members. Additionally, in modern times, it sometimes connotes a secret society especially regarding freemasonry, odd fellows, various academic, and student societies. HERE IS SOME EXAMPLE OF FRATERNITIES IN THE PHILIPPINES 

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF JOINING IN

ADVANTAGES: Academic Support, Career opportunities, Leadership and Responsibility development, Teamwork, Social Network. DISADVANTAGES: Deal with hazing, Membership fees,Time commitments, Dangerous behaviors, Limited social reach.

Life has long been a part of the college experience and fraternities are still a popular prospect for many new students. However, fraternities often make headlines one or more of their members commit crimes. While all fraternities can't be lumped into one category or stereotyped as bad, some general similarities exist that have given fraternities a negative reputation. If you're concerned about joining a fraternity, make sure you understand the history, traditions and reputation of its members before pledging. The example of it is Hazing. Hazing is the ritual most people connect with negative outcomes in fraternities is hazing. Hazing refers to the initiation rituals, customs or traditions new pledges must be a part of in order to join. Hazing practices have caused deaths and injuries after fraternity leaders subjected pledges to dangerous tasks like binge drinking, locking them in enclosed spaces or asking them to perform risky physical stunts. Hazing practices are not only dangerous to the individuals who must perform them, but they also compromise the reputation and integrity of the fraternity as a whole.

Anti-Hazing Act of 1995

The Anti-Hazing Act of 1995, also known as Republic Act No. 8049 is a national legislation in the Philippines regulating the act of hazing and other initiation rites in fraternities and sororities in the country. It prohibits and penalizes physical harm and violence in such practices. The Anti-Hazing Act was passed as a response to the death of Leonardo Villa in 1991. Villa died from multiple injuries when he underwent hazing rites by the Aquila Legis, a fraternity of law students at the Ateneo de Manila University. Two decades later in 2012, the Supreme Court of the Philippines found five members of the fraternity guilty of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. The Anti-Hazing Act couldn't be applied to the five since it was still yet to be enacted as law when Villa died. These violent acts were supposed to be prevented by the Anti-Hazing Law. But many believe that the law lacks the needed teeth to actually end the long-standing “tradition” of violence present among organizations – particularly fraternities and sororities.

CONCLUSION Our group conclude that fraternity is one of the first reason why people joining in fraternity it is because they want to gain protection and have a good friends of mine, but it seems that instead of proctection the people who are joining in fraternity gains unrightful treatment from it.

EXAMPLE CASE SHOWING ONE OF THE VICTIMS OF HAZING Horacio Castillo III, a first-year law student of the University of Santo Tomas, died Sunday, September 17, from injuries his parents believe were sustained in fraternity hazing initiation rites. Castillo – "Atio" to his family – was found lying on a pavement, covered with a blanket, in the corner of H. Lopez Boulevard and Infanta Street in Balut, Tondo, Manila at about 7:50 am Sunday, September 17, by medical technologist John Paul Sarte Solano, who was then buying a cigarette. Solano flagged down vehicles passing by the area to bring the thenunidentified victim to the hospital until a red Strada stopped to help him out. Castillo was brought to Chinese General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival at 9:21 am. On Sunday night, Castillo's parents received an anonymous text, tipping them about their son's whereabouts. The Castillos found their son's remains at the Archangel Funeral Home in Sampaloc, Manila, bearing bruises in both arms, cigarette burns, and candle wax drippings all over his body. Manila Police District spokesperson Erwin Margarejo said on Monday, September 18,the death of Castillo was caused by a cardiac or respiratory arrest, triggered by traumatic injuries. Margarejo did not confirm that the death of the law student is caused by a hazing incident, however, and insisted that the angle is being especially investigated. All angles titingnan natin, but especially hazing, dahil usually naman kapag may hematoma cases, isa sa dahilan ay either torture or hazing," he said. (We are looking into all angles, but especially hazing, since usually in hematoma cases, one of the causes is either torture or hazing.). As of posting, Castillo's parents have yet to finalize their sworn statements with the Manila Police District, where they reported their son's death Monday.
