Hot rods “muscle” their way into the Fairgrounds You won’t find any “Cash for Clunkers” in this bunch! The 10th Annual Roamin’ Angels Car Club Car Show is coming to the Nevada County Fairgrounds September 11-13. Last year over 800 classic pre-1972 American made cars and trucks showed up and this year they are hoping for even more. The Club’s goal is to make the show one of the largest classic car shows in Northern California. Once again the show will provide car enthusiasts a wide variety of classic restorations, chopped, dropped and muscled up cars and trucks. The show is the Roamin’ Angels’ largest fund raiser of the year with proceeds donated back to community organizations, scholarships to local high school students and aids in the funding of the club’s annual toy drive with the Salvation Army. The event kicks off with a participant-only barbeque and dance on Friday with Saturday and Sunday open to the public. Kid’s can compete in a Hot Wheels gravity drag

race and exhibition on Saturday. Saturday night will also feature live entertainment. Gate admission is $5.00 for adults and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Food and drink will be available on the grounds. For more information on the Roamin’ Angels car club you can visit www.roaminangels.com.

Community Event

History lives on at Miners’ Picnic The Empire Mine Park Association invites you to attend the 114th Annual Miners’ Picnic on Saturday, August 29th from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Empire Mine State Historic Park. The Miners’ Picnic was once a fund raiser for miners injured or killed in the gold mines. Now it is a community-wide event that is enjoyed by all ages. This is a family-oriented day with frequent activities such as cake walks and ladies slipper kicking contests. For a small fee guests can also pan for gold. There are also free old-fashioned children’s games, with prizes, such as three-legged races, gunny sack races, and egg-onspoon races, beanbag toss, and a clown with lots of balloons for the children. Admission is $3.00 for adults 17 and over, $1.00 for children 6 to 6 and those under 6 admitted free. A Silent Auction will be held in the Clubhouse starting at 10:30 am with all bidding

stopping at 2:00 pm. A variety of special items are available to bid on. All proceeds remain at the Park and are used to restore the historic buildings and grounds or to enhance educational opportunities for the public. This year

the Association has added 50/50 raffles that will also benefit the Park. For more information about the Empire Mine and the Miners’ Picnic visit www.empiremine.org.

Auto Pros

Simple to-do’s that improve your gas mileage You can’t do anything about the price you pay at the pump, but you can help extend the time between visits. By doing a few simples tasks you can improve your vehicle’s gas mileage by 12%

or more. How big of savings is that for you? If your vehicle gets 22 miles per gallon, has a 15 gallon gas tank, and you fill up your vehicle once a week, a 12% increase in fuel efficiency would result in stops at the pump to fillup six less times per year. With the average gallon of gas priced at $3.00, six less visits to the pump will save you $270.00 per year per family vehicle. And that doesn’t include the additional savings on coffee, doughnuts and Slim Jims you end up purchasing when you walk in to pay the teller. Keep your engine properly tuned. A properly tuned engine can improve your vehicle’s gas mileage by an average of 4%. Fixing a

serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor can improve your mileage by as much as 40%. Keep your tires properly inflated. Under- inflated tires can lower your gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in pressure in all four tires. On average

A new beginning for the historic Holbrooke Hotel There is a new excitement at one of Nevada County’s oldest historical businesses. Recent economic pitfalls have plagued the Holbrooke Hotel and have caused management to consider closing the hotel. On August 1st, the Hotel welcomed new management. Atlantic First Holdings Inc., a New Jersey corporation took over the operations at the hotel. According to Atlantic First Holdings Inc.’s board members and interim General Manager Michael Grande, the new management team is bringing a new vision to the Holbrooke. These plans are to add more beauty and charm to the already existing Hotel. The new management team wants to sustain the charm and character while renovating the property. Plans are currently underway to start renovation which will attract new guests to the Hotel and Grass Valley. Grande is inviting everyone to come and share The Historic Holbrooke experience. “The Holbrooke Hotel has always been a great treasure to downtown Grass Valley and Nevada County. It’s a great mix of fun, upbeat music and colorful costumes along with dancers of every age showing off their talent and unique choreography skills. There will be ongoing clogging workshops, with special performances on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 at 1 pm. Taste of the Gold Country - Food & Wine Fest. Draft Horse Classic frequently asked questions Q: What is a draft horse? A: A draft horse (US) or dray horse, from the Anglo-Saxson “dragan” meaning to draw or haul, is a large horse bred for hard, heavy tasks such as plowing and farm labor. Q: How tall is a draft horse? A: Draft breeds range from approximately 16 hands to 19 hands at the withers. Q: How long is a hand? A: A hand is four inches. So a draft horse that is 19 hands tall measures 76 inches from the ground to the withers. That’s 6’4”, taller than most men. Q: What part of the draft horse is September 2009

“the withers”? A: The withers is the highest part of the back at the base of the neck of the Draft Horse. Q: What is the tallest horse ever? A: A horse appropriately named Sampson (AKA Mammoth) is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest horse. In 1850 he was measured at 21.2 1/2 hands or just over 7 feet 2 inches tall at the withers. Q: How much does a draft horse weigh? A: Between 1,400 and 2,000 pounds. Q: What does a draft horse eat? A: A LOT!!!!! 888-7653

Q: So why do they measure the size of a horse in “hands”? A: According to legend, a gentleman went to measure his favorite horse. Not having a device to measure with, he used an ancient Egyptian method that would give him a consistent measurement, the palm of his hand. Ancient Egyptian history is given credit for standardization of measurement. Around 3,000 BC the “hand” measurement was introduced. Placing your four fingers and thumb together measures about 4 inches across your hands palm at the base of the fingers to the top of the thumb. See, now you’re never without a ruler.
