For three hours on Saturday, March 7 a shopper’s nirvana can be experienced. Imagine an afternoon of shopping that features fine wine, great food, diverse stores and all within walking distance. Some fancy “big city” mall event you say? Nope, it’s occurs every year right in our own backyard of downtown Grass Valley. The Foothills Celebration pairs area wineries and restaurants with local downtown Grass Valley merchants for a very unique wine, food tasting and shopping affair. With over 50 restaurants and wineries involved, this rain or shine event keeps everyone in good spirits! Some of the items to be included on the food menu include sushi rolls, mini blackberry/peach cobblers, shrimp wraps, homemade ice cream, pasties, flat breads, pizza, homemade fudge, baked brie with a dried fruit compote and crab cakes with aoli sauce. Over the last several years, Nevada County has come into its own as a Mecca for small wineries with 48 different varietal planted locally and 18 wineries producing over 40,000 cases of wine each year. Along with the tasting of fine wine and food, you’ll also be entertained by local musicians as you stroll down Mill, Bank Street and West Main Street in historic downtown Grass Valley.

Local Singers Going “Side By Side” with Stephen Sondheim shows are classic Broadway musicals which have been made into movies that have been seen by millions of people worldwide. In the early 1970’s, Sondheim Stephen Sondheim won three Stephen Sondheim made an impressive Broadway consecutive Tony awards for his scores for Company, debut in 1957 when, at the age of 27, he wrote the Follies, and A Little Night Music, each a landmark in lyrics for West Side Story. Two years later he wrote the lyrics for Gypsy. And only three years after that he Broadway musical history. Side by Side by Sondheim features songs from these and other Sondheim musiwrote both music and lyrics for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. All three of these cals. Now through March 14th, The Center for the Arts will be presenting the classical musical revue Side by Side by Sondheim. The show, featuring local talent, celebrates the songs of the greatest Broadway composer and lyricist of his generation, Stephen Sondheim. Performances will take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights with a special 2:00pm matinee on Sunday, March 8th. Thursday show times are 7:00pm with the curtain going up on Fridays and Saturday nights at 8:00pm. In all, 10 performances of Side by Side by Sondheim will take place (see show schedule on page13). All shows will take place at the Center for the Arts at 314 West Main Street in Downtown Grass Valley.

This production of Side by Side by Sondheim showcases the acting and singing talents of eight of Nevada County’s most talented performers, Rik Augustin, Daniel Brooks, Corinne Gelfan, JR Lewis, Janet Rossman, Dawn Simmons, Krista Thomas and Kim Wellman. Wellman, Thomas, Lewis and Gelfan appeared in The World Goes Round: The Songs of Kander & Ebb at the Off Center Stage last summer. Simmons, Rossman, Augustin and Wellman recently appeared in the sold-out Lake Wildwood Theatre production of Tickets Please. Brooks has performed numerous times in Nevada County, most recently at the Center for the Arts in a benefit concert to raise funds for a grand piano for The Center for the Arts. A Musical, Festive Way “Spring” Into The New Season Music in the Mountains is celebrating its 28th season bringing the classical, Jazz, Broadway and Big Band music to Nevada County year round, with a festival for every season.
