Community Event

Three days plus eight seconds = PV Rodeo! The Penn Valley Rodeo will once again be riding into town May 15th 17th. Three days of events will kick off Friday the 15th with a barbeque to take place at the Penn Valley Rodeo Arena beginning at 5:30pm, gates open at 5:00pm. Then it’s time to rodeo with the Grand Entry at 6:30pm and rodeo action beginning at 7:00pm. In addition to the Friday night action, this year’s Penn Valley Rodeo will feature performances on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Stock for this year’s rodeo is being furnished by 4 Star with Barrelman Donny Landis again providing rodeo thrills and entertainment. Additional events include a Saturday morning parade (see article on this page), kids mutton bustin’, dances Friday and Saturday night, and a Rodeo Queen coronation. For a complete listing of Penn Valley Rodeo events and times see pages 12 and 13. The Penn Valley Rodeo Arena is located behind the fire station on

The annual Penn Valley Rodeo Parade will begin at 1:15pm at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley, proceed down Penn Valley Drive and end at the Penn Valley Rodeo Grounds located on Spenceville Road. The parade, hosted by the Penn Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate the area’s western heritage while recognizing area schools, service groups, western riders, youth groups, businesses and more. Featured in this year’s parade is the legendary Buffalo Bill Stagecoach (pictured) shown by Wells Fargo Bank. This year’s parade Grand Marshall is Louie Osterude. Community Event

Art auction to benefit homeless shelter to help fund the Hospitality House Homeless Shelter Program. Last year’s event raised $12,000.00. The art auction will feature paintings, garden art, ceramic and wearable creations with this year’s theme being “Home”. Professional, as well as student work, will be available for the live and silent auction. Over 100 pieces of fine art by favorite artists will be on display including original works by Liz Collins, Kathy Wronski (pictured), and a Sacred Garden sculpture by

Experience history and some golden memories The annual Spring Open House at Empire Mine State Historic Park will take place Sunday, May 10th from 11:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. Activities will include living history presentations in the Bourn Cottage, mine yard and Clubhouse. In the Bourn Cottage, volunteers will be dressed in period costumes and will recreate characters from the Empire Mine’s colorful past. There will also be live music throughout the day. Mr. & Mrs. Bourn and their guests will greet you and speak to you as if you were visiting in the year 1905. In the mine yard, volunteers portray workers of the past and enact a working day at the mine. Meet the office staff and other mine workers, see and hear working machinery, smell the blacksmiths burning coal, and feel the coolness of the mineshaft. The gardens should be blooming and you will have the opportunity to purchase heirloom plants propagated in the mine’s greenhouses. Children will have the fun of decorating a potted plant for a Mother’s Day gift. Admission is $3.00 for those 17 and older, $1.00 for six to 16, and under six are admitted free. All proceeds benefit the Empire Mine Park Association in its ongoing programs to restore the historic buildings and grounds and to enhance educational opportunities at the park.

Hospice of the Foothills Open House May 2 You’re invited to an open house of the newly completed Hospice of the Foothills building located on 11270 Rough and Ready Highway in Grass Valley. The open house will take place Saturday, May 2nd from 1:00-4:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to tour the new 12-bed facility before patients move in. The tour is being conducted by Friends of Hospice, a volunteer group that assists in the support of Hospice through fund raisers and community education programs. The Open House is free but donations for building and room furnishings are still needed. Donation information and docents will be located along the tour route. Refreshments will also be available. For more information about Friends of Hospice call 274-5121. The main entrance to the Hospice patient facility. Community Event The foothills will be alive with the sound of Bluegrass The California Bluegrass Association will presents its 34th Annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival at the Nevada County Fairgrounds June 18th through June 21st . The festival has become one of most important and biggest bluegrass festivals on the West Coast. It would be very difficult to name a famous bluegrass act that has not played this festival with many top acts considering this event one of their favorite stops on tour. At present 35 bluegrass acts are scheduled to perform over the four day period with nearly non-stop stage activity from morning till night. The event is family friendly, with plenty of opportunities for youngsters of all ages to jam with contemporaries or receive musical instruction with other kids. The CBA’s “Kids on Bluegrass” program is world famous and many fine musicians have been cultivated through
