Community Event Comedy icons the Smothers Brothers to perform in Grass Valley The Center for the Arts is proud to bring the legendary comedic duo, The Smothers Brothers, to Grass Valley Saturday, October 17th. The brothers will perform at 8:00pm at the Veteran Memorial Auditorium, 255 South Auburn Street. Tickets are $45.00 for general admission. There is also a $125.00 per person package available that includes reserve table seating in front of the stage, a pre-event cocktail party with entertainment and complimentary beer, wine, and appetizers along with reserved parking. At press time tickets were still available and can be purchased at the Center for the Arts, 314 W Main Street, Grass Valley. Smothers Brothers History: Tom and Dick Smothers have been making people laugh for more than five decades, blending hilarious brotherly banter with unparalleled showmanship, musical talents, and yo-yo skills to boot. With 12 top-selling albums, a number one televi-

sion show, countless appearances on variety shows from the 1950s to today, and coast-tocoast, sold-out performances, the Smothers Brothers cuttingedge humor was ahead of its time and still remains timeless. Tom and Dick’s first professional appearance as the Smothers Brothers was at the Purple Onion in San Francisco in February, 1959. Their first national television appearance was on The Jack Paar Show on January 28, 1961. They appeared countless times with Johnny Carson and on the variety shows of the era. In the early 60’s they also recorded the first of twelve top-selling albums. But it was February of 1967 that was a defining moment in their career. The #1 show on TV was the long-running

series Bonanza. Many shows had fallen in its wake. CBS-TV decided to schedule The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour against the western never suspect Continued on page 8

Community Event Smothers Brothers Continued from page 7 ing that it would soon unseat Bonanza from its lofty perch. According to Wikipedia, “it started out as only a slightly ‘hip’ version of the typical comedy-variety show of its era, but rapidly evolved into a show that extended the boundaries of what was considered permissible in television satire.” The irreverent show featured many writers and series regulars who went on to successful comedy careers including Steve Martin. The show also presented the top musical acts of the day, many of whom were shunned elsewhere on TV due to the nature of their music, including The Doors, Joan Baez, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, Pete Seeger, and a stunning performance by The Who which climaxed with the literal explosion of their drums. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour had become as controversial and influential as it was popular, satirizing politics, racism, and the unpopular Vietnam War among other topics. Despite the show’s success, in April of 1969, the Smothers Brothers were fired by the CBS Television Network. “Smothered,” a film by award-winning director, Maureen Muldaur, documents the Brother’s struggle against censorship and, as a lawsuit later determined, the wrongful firing by CBS. In the 70’s and 80’s the Smothers Brothers returned to TV with new primetime comedy series and specials. They contin-

ctober is shaping up to be a busy month at the Holbrooke Hotel. The new ownership and management team are excited to introduce you to their updated diner and lunch menus featuring many new items and pricing. Another feature the Holbrooke is excited about is their speedy lunch guarantee. They know most only have an hour of lunch, so your lunch will be served to you in 20 minutes or less after ordering. Of course you’re invited to stay as long as you want, but that is between you and the boss. For those who love the taste of the grapes, local wine tasting will take place at the historic Golden Gate Saloon in the Holbrooke Hotel. All day wine tours and packages will soon be offered. October at the Holbrooke is also entertaining with live music featured on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Make sure you make you circle October 31st for the 1st Annual Holbrooke Masquerade Halloween Ball, featuring a Champagne Prime Rib buffet, live entertainment, dancing, prizes and maybe even an appearance by the Holbrooke Ghost. Reservations for this event are recommended. The Holbrooke Hotel is located at 212 West Main Street in downtown Grass Valley. 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Miners Foundry Miners Foundry Timeline 1855: Ironworks foundry and blacksmith shop opens to repair and replace heavy machinery manufactured in San Francisco and Sacramento and hauled to the mining camps by teams of horses and oxen. 1856: Fire destroys most of Nevada City, including the Foundry. 1859: The Foundry is rebuilt using local granite and natural stone, and is named The Nevada Iron and Brass Foundry and Machine Shop 1862: It is believed Andrew Hallidie, inventor of San Francsico’s cable car system, builds the second Pine St. Bridge over Deer Creek with equipment cast at the Foundry. 1878: Lester Pelton models, tests, and manufactures the Pelton Wheel.* 1907: Foundry is sold to William Martin and renamed Miners Foundry. Martin previously owned the local Mayflower Mine which yielded a million dollar takeout in five years. He used the first commmercial Pelton Wheel to operate his stamp mill. Foundry expands, fabricates steel, makes pipe fittings, rails, ore cars, and supplies for General Electric as well as gateballs for Hoover Dam, steel pieces for the spire of the TransAmerica Building in San Francisco, decorative pieces, parts for Liberty ships and the “Wee Willie” state-of-the-art juicer. 1965: Building is purchased by Ray Amick who sells off machinery, although some steel fabrication continued. 1974: Foundry is purchased by Charles Woods and David Osborn, San Francisco artists, who change the name to the American Victorian Museum, and convert the building, creating a venue for the performing arts. Community radio KVMR begins broadcasting. 1989: Foundry is purchased by Nevada City Winery; Victorian Museum relocates. 1990: Foundry is donated to the Nevada County Cultural Preservation Trust and renamed Miners Foundry Cultural Center; for cultural, historical, business, social and community events.

October 2009

Originally built in 1855 as an ironworks foundry, the Miners Foundry today has evolved into one of the areas top cultural venues. On Sunday, September 27th the Miners Foundry will celebrate its 150th anniversary. So the math tells you that the foundry is really 154 years old. Yes and no. The original foundry building built in 1855 burned to the ground in 1856 in a fire that destroyed most of Nevada City. The foundry was rebuilt in 1859 using granite and natural stone. Over the course of its years of service the foundry has had many names, functions, and owners (see Foundry Timeline). The 150th Anniversary celebration will be a free family event featuring games, interactive displays, a working stamp mill, and more. The celebration will take place from 11:00am until 3:00pm at 325 Spring Street in downtown Nevada City. All ages can learn hands on about the history of where we live while enjoying hot Cornish pasties, cold ice cream, and popcorn, plus live entertainment from the Humbugs and the Cornish Choir. You also have the opportunity to add an item to the time capsule which will be buried later this year during the gala celebration. For 150 years the Miners Foundry has been an integral part of daily life in Nevada City and a testament to recycling historic buildings for present day use. It has a rich history of hosting high school proms, weddings, film festivals, community gatherings, renowned speakers and artists, and much more. Foothills Marketplace 21
