Introduction – Koran Science 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6. 7.

In previous Presentations in this series, I have set out the evidence for the Koran assuming a Flat Earth. Such a suggestion is totally unacceptable to most Muslims. Most Muslims cannot admit to this being true as this would disprove Islam. When somebody claims that there are Scientific errors in the Koran, a common response of many Muslims is to claim that there are Scientific Miracles in the Koran which prove its Divine origin. These alleged “Scientific Miracles” or “Koran Science” are said to have Scientific fore-knowledge of modern Science which Mohammed or other early Muslims could not possibly have known without information from God. There are many dozens of supposed examples of this “Koran Science” on the Internet.(At least 80-100) Presentations 10,11 &12 in this series will limit themselves 50 claims of modern Scientific knowledge relating to Cosmology in the Koran. 24th August 2009

Cosmology of the Koran & Hadith In the previous Presentations in this series it was suggested that the Koran and Hadith assume a Universe such as the one shown in the picture on the left. Islamic Fundamentalists would argue that this is nonsense. They claims that the Koran and Hadith are in perfect harmony with modern Science.

Origins of Koran Science In 1976, this book by a Non-Muslim French Medical Doctor was published. The Book claims that the Koran, unlike The Bible is in perfect harmony with Modern Science. Furthermore, it claims that the Koran contains foreknowledge of modern Scientific discoveries made only in recent years. This, the book claims, is proof of the Korans divine Origin. 24th August 2009

Maurice Bucaille & King Faisal In 1973, Maurice Bucaille, the Author was appointed as personal physician to King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. The King, an Islamic Fundamentalist & one of the richest men in the World was keen to use his enormous wealth in order to promote Islam. To do this, he sponsored Bucaille to write a book, reputedly for a sum of $6 Million. Using a non-Muslim as a “Front Man” was a public relations stunt designed to dishonestly give the book an image of objectivity that it would not have had if a Muslim had written it. 24th August 2009

7

Wahhabism:The real source of Koran Science

In his book, Bucaille mentions Saudi Government officials & Religious Scholars who provided him with lots of assistance and information when he was writing it.These individuals appear to be the real authors of the book & Bucaille appears to be their “Front Man”. 24th August 2009

Koran Science

In more recent years, many books by Muslims have appeared and are freely available on Islamic Websites or in PDF format for free downloading. 24th August 2009

10

Harun Yahya Perhaps the most prominent proponent of Koran Science today, is the controversial Turkish writer Adnan Oktar, who uses the pen name “Harun Yahya.” Oktar uses many of the ideas of Bucaille and has added new Ones of his own. Nearly all the examples of alleged Scientific Miracles in the Koran can be traced back to either Bucaille or Oktar. 24th August 2009

11

Bewley Koran This is a popular modern English translation of the Koran. However, the authors are practitioners of Sufism, which some traditional Muslims consider to be heretical. Some Muslims, especially the Saudi Arabian government, consider this translation corrupt. Harun Yahya uses this version in all of his works.

12

Rashad Khalifa Koran Another significant figure in the Field of Koran Science was Rashad Khalifa who produced a popular English translation of the Koran Khalifa, proclaimed himself to be an Islamic Prophet and successor to Mohammed. He founded a group known as the Submitters. Most Muslims regarded him as a heretic who had blasphemed Islam & produced a corrupt translation of the Koran. He was murdered in 1990 by Muslim extremists.

Classification of the types of Scientific Miracles said to be found in the Koran There are perhaps about 100 – 120 different alleged Scientific Miracles in the Koran, according to Islamic Fundamentalists. They appear to fall into the categories in this chart. These Presentations will focus on the alleged relating to Astronomy, Cosmology & the Physical Sciences. 24th August 2009

13) Sub-Atomic Particles

6) Inter-Galactic Nebulae

14) Nuclear Fission

7) Stellar Evolution

15) Anti-Matter

21

Claim 01 The Big Bang "Do not the Unbelievers see that the Heavens and the Earth were joined together, then we clove them asunder and We got every living thing out of the water. Will they not then believe?" Surah 21:30 Bucaille & Harun Yahya

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

22

Claim 01 The Big Bang 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Modern Astronomy has come to the conclusion that the Universe originated in a huge explosion or “Big Bang” some 13.7 billion years ago. Many Muslims claim that this was foretold in Surah 21:30 of the Koran 1400 years ago. The Big Bang theory was only first proposed in the 1920’s and accepted since the 1960’s. Many Muslims like to claim that the Koran predicted this modern Scientific discovery over 1300 years before modern Astronomy. It is argued that such amazing Scientific foresight is nothing short of miraculous and proves that there is modern Scientific knowledge in the Koran. It is further argued that the only explanation for this is the divine origin of the Koran and the truth of the religion of Islam.

Surah 21:30 Checking the translation 1 Pickthall “Have not those who disbelieve known that the Heavens & the Earth were of one piece, then We parted them?” Yusuf Ali “Do not the Unbelievers see that the Heavens & the Earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder?” Hilali-Khan “Have not those who disbelieve known that the Heavens & the Earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? “ Shakir “Do not those who disbelieve see that the Heavens & the Earth were closed up, but We have opened them?” Sher Ali “Do not the disbelievers see that the Heavens & the Earth were a closed up-mass, then We opened them out?” Khalifa “Do the unbelievers not realize that the Heaven & the Earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence?” 24th August 2009

24

Surah 21:30 Checking the translation 2 Arberry “Have not the unbelievers then beheld that the Heavens and the Earth were a mass all sewn up, and then We unstitched them?” Palmer “Do not those who misbelieve see that the Heavens and the Earth were both solid, and we burst them asunder?” Rodwell “Do not the infidels see that the Heavens and the Earth were both a solid mass, and that we clave them asunder?” Sale “Do not the unbelievers therefore know, that the Heavens and the Earth were solid, and we clave the same in sunder?” Irving “Have not those who disbelieve seen how Heaven and Earth were once one solid mass which We ripped apart?“ Dawood “Are the disbelievers aware that the Heavens and the Earth were of one solid mass which we tore asunder?”

Response to Claim 01 1.

2.

3.

Surah 21:30 is very vague. If it refers to the Big Bang, how is it that Muslim Astronomers did not explicitly predict the Big Bang centuries ago? Have Muslims been incorrectly interpreting the Koran for 1400 years? Surah 21:30 implies that the Earth and the rest of the Universe are about the same age.Modern Science has calculated that the Universe is 13.7 billion years old & that the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. Earth was formed from raw materials created in stars shortly prior to its formation. The Earth was never joined with the rest of the Universe. The term “Heavens” does not refer to Outer Space. No such concept exists in the Koran. The “Heavens” refer to a place up in the Sky where God, his Angels and dead Muslims exist.

27

Surah 21:30 What it really means

This is what Surah 21:30 really means. Here God lifts up the solid Sky which was previously lying on the ground. 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

28

Egyptian God Shu raises up the Sky In Egyptian Mythology, the Air God Shu raised up Nut the Sky Goddess Above Geb, the Earth God. Surah 21:30 is just another version of this Myth.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

29

Claim 01- Conclusion 1.

Surah 21:30 does not refer to the Big Bang. Such a belief is out of line with both traditional Islamic interpretations of the Koran and modern Science.

3.

Surah 21:30 is just an Islamic version of a popular Creation Myth about the separation of the Earth and Sky that was widespread in the Ancient Middle East.

5.

Far from proving that the Koran is in harmony with modern Science, this verse shows exactly the opposite. That is to say that much of the Koran is just a collection of myths.

30

Claim 02 – Ex-Nilho Creation is described in the Koran

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

31

Claim 02 Ex-Nilho creation “ Creator of the Heavens & the Earth from nothingness, He has only to say when He wills a thing, “Be” & it is.” Surah 2:117 “He created the Heavens and the Earth from nothing.” Surah 6:101 Harun Yahya

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

32

Claim 02 Ex Nilho Creation 1.

Modern Astronomy believes that the Universe came into being from nothing at the Big Bang. Many Creation stories begin with pre-existing material.

3.

It is claimed that Surah 2:117 & Surah 6:101 agree with modern science and are 1400 years ahead of their time.

5.

This is said to indicate scientific foreknowledge and therefore divine authorship for the Koran & the truth of Islam.

He hath created everything, and He knoweth everything!” Sale “[He is] the maker of Heaven and Earth: How should he have issue since he hath no consort? He hath created all things, and he is omniscient.” Irving “Deviser of Heaven and Earth! How can He save a son while He has no consort? Response to Claim 02 1. 2.

3. 4.

Even if the Koran is speaking of Ex-Nilho creation, this is not an original idea. Over 500 years before the birth of Mohammed, the Jewish Philosopher Philo of Alexandria (20BC – 50AD) discussed this idea. Centuries earlier in the C8th BC, the Greek Poet Hesiod also discussed this concept. When we check the Hadith however, there is some doubt about God creating the Universe Ex-Nilho.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

38

Ex Nilho Creation an old idea Centuries before Mohammed, the Greek the Jewish Philosopher Philo of Alexandria (top) & the Greek Poet Hesiod (bottom)and had discussed the concept of creation Ex-Nilho. There is some doubt if this is how Creation is described in the Koran.

39

Creation according to the Hadith - God above the Cosmic Ocean Al-Bukhari Volume 4, Book 54, Number 414: Narrated Imran bin Husain: I went to the Prophet and tied my she-camel at the gate.….. Then some Yemenites came to him and he said, "Accept the good tidings, O people of Yemen, for Bani Tamim refused them." They said, "We accept it, O Allah's Apostle! We have come to ask you about this matter (i.e. the start of creations)." He said, "First of all, there was nothing but Allah, and (then He created His Throne). His throne was over the water, and He wrote everything in the Book (in the Heaven) and created the Heavens and the Earth." Then a man shouted, "O Ibn Husain! Your she-camel has gone away!" So, I went away and could not see the she-camel because of the mirage. By Allah, I wished I had left that she-camel (but not that gathering). 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

40

God on his throne above the waters before Creation according to the Hadith God on his throne above the waters of the waters or infinite Cosmic ocean in which the Universe of the Koran sits.

Cosmic Ocean

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

Notice how the ocean already existed & was not created By God 41

Claim 02- Conclusion 1.

The Koran is vague about the details of how God created the Universe. It is uncertain if Creation was Ex-Nilho o using pre-existing material.

3.

Even if Creation was Ex-Nilho, there is nothing remarkable about this idea being known in the C7th AD.

5.

The Hadith suggests that a vast Ocean existed prior to Creation. This idea is found in Ancient Mesopotamian Cosmology. God may well have created the Universe from the Ocean using water or mud from the Ocean bed as raw material.

Claim 03 – The Expansion of the Universe is described in the Koran

24th August 2009

43

Claim 03 Expansion of the Universe 1 This is said to be a reference to the expansion of the Universe 1400 years ago.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

44

Claim 03 Expansion of the Universe 2 The word “confines” is said to refer to the increasing size of the Universe throughout its History. “Company of jinn and men, if you are able to pierce through the confines of the Heavens and Earth, pierce through them. You will not pierce through except with a clear authority.” Surah 55:33 Harun Yahya 24th August 2009

And we made the Earth habitable; a perfect design.” Arberry “And Heaven -- We built it with might, and we extend it wide. And the Earth -- We spread it forth; O excellent smoothers!” Palmer “And the Heaven - we have built it with might, and, verily, we do surely give it ample space! Response to Claim 03 1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Surah 51:47 & Surah 55:33 are very vague and neither mentions the expansion of space.Only the Rashad Khalifa translation comes close, but the other 11 translations contradict him. The translation of Surah 51:47 that is said to describe the expansion of the Universe is not accurate. It appears to be a deliberate alteration of the words of the Koran. Altering the words of the Koran is a serious sin in Islam. All Surah 51:47 is saying is that the Universe is very large. There is nothing remarkable about such a statement. Anyone can see that it is true. Surah 51:48 describes the Earth as being “spread out” implying that it is flat. Surah 55:33 is a challenge to Humanity and the Jinn to climb up to Heaven if they can. This implies that Heaven is a place up in the Sky.This verse says nothing about an expanding Universe.

Surah 51:47- 48 The Earth is described as a being “spread out” in the Koran God is described as spreading out the Earth while creating it. Likewise a baker spreads out dough by flattening it. This may be what the Koran means 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

55

Surah 51:47- 48 “Spreading out” the Earth? This dough has been spread out into a flat shape. The Koran may be describing God spreading out the Earth into a flat shape in a similar manner.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

56

Claim 03- Conclusion 1.

There are no explicit references to an expanding Universe in the Koran.

3.

Claims to the contrary are dishonest and based on deliberately altering the words of the Koran. This is forbidden in Islam.

5.

All that the verses in question say is that the Universe is very big.

7.

In fact, some translations of Surah 51:47-48 describe the Earth as “wide”, “spread out” or like a “carpet.” This implies that the Earth is flat.

Claim 04 The Big Crunch The Big Crunch is like the Big Bang, only in reverse. Some Scientists have suggested that eventually, the expansion of the Universe will cease and then reverse. Some Muslims claims that this is referred to in the Koran thus proving its divine origin & the truth of Islam.

Response to Claim 04 •

Surah 21:104 & Surah 39:67 make no reference to countless Galaxies of Stars falling in on each other over billions of years as envisaged in the Big Crunch.

What is really being described is God rolling up the solid Sky Dome over the Flat Earth. If the Sky can be rolled up or folded like a scroll then it must be solid.

The Koran is describing Judgement day and not the Big Crunch. The Big Crunch if it happens will be tens of billions of years in the future. Islam has never taught that Judgement Day is so far away.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

65

Surah 39:67/ 21:104 Solid Sky rolled up What these verses are referring to is the Sky being rolled up on Judgement Day. This suggests a belief that the Sky was solid.

24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

66

Claim 04 - Conclusion 1.

The Koran does not refer to the Big Crunch, but rather to Judgement Day and the Solid Sky Dome being rolled up.

3.

How come, Muslims did not realise this centuries ago?Have they been misinterpreting the Koran?

5.

The belief that the Koran describes the Big Crunch is just wishful thinking

7.

These verses actually show how primitive and backward the Cosmology of the Koran is.Rather than proving the Koran to be in harmony with Science, they demonstrate the opposite.

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

69

Claim 05 Formation of Galaxies and the Solar System 1.

Modern Astronomy believes that the Galaxies and Star Systems with Planets within them formed from huge clouds of Gas or Nebulae. This idea was first proposed only 250 years ago by Kant & Laplace.

3.

It is claimed that Surah 41:11 agree with modern Science and is over 1000 years ahead of its time.

5.

This is said to indicate scientific foreknowledge and therefore divine authorship for the Koran & the truth of Islam.

Response to Claim 05 1. 2.

3. 4.

5.

Surah 41:11 not describe the condensation of Galaxies and Star Systems. There are no references to any such bodies. The Galaxies and their Stars condensed from Hydrogen and Helium gas which is nothing like smoke.Smoke is the product of Carbon burning in oxygen. There is no smoke in Outer Space. Neither Carbon, Oxygen or any elements other than Hydrogen and Helium were present at the start of the Universe. The sequence of events is all wrong.Surah 41 says that God created the Earth first and then the Sky.Modern Science says that the Earth formed after the Galaxy and most of its stars. This claim is distorting the meaning of the Koran and taking Surah 41:11 out of context.(See next slide)

Surah 41:9-12 (Pickthall) “Say (O Muhammad, unto the idolaters): Disbelieve ye verily in Him Who created the Earth in two Days, and ascribe ye unto Him rivals? He placed therein firm hills rising above it, and blessed it and measured therein its sustenance in four Days, alike for (all) who ask; Then turned He to the Heaven when it was smoke, and said unto it and unto the Earth: Come both of you, willingly or loth. They said: We come, obedient. Then He ordained them seven Heavens in two Days and inspired in each heaven its mandate; and We decked the nether heaven with lamps, and rendered it inviolable. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Knower.” The Koran says that the Earth was created at the same time or possibly before the rest of the Universe.Modern Science says that the opposite is true. 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

75

Claim 05 - Conclusion 1.

The Koran does not describe the formation of Galaxies or Star Systems.Such concepts are not in the Koran

3.

The order of Creation in the Koran is the opposite to that of Modern Science.

5.

Hydrogen and Helium look nothing like smoke.

7.

Claim 06 Inter-Galactic Nebulae 1.

Modern Astronomical Observations in recent years have discovered immense clouds of Gas between the 1000 Trillion Galaxies in the known Universe.

3.

Some Muslims claims that these were referred to in the Koran 1400 years ago when it mentions things that are between Heaven and Earth.

Response to Claim 06 1.

Surah 25:59 makes no reference to Galaxies or Nebulae between them.No such concepts exist in the Koran.

3.

This interpretation is making the unwarranted assumption that the Universe of the Koran is the same as the Universe of Modern Astronomy.

5.

The Universe of the Koran is not the modern Universe. The Koran repeatedly describes a Tri-Partite Universe totally Alien to modern Science.

Claim 06 - Conclusion 1.

The Koran does not describe Inter-Galactic Nebulae.Such concepts are not in the Koran

3.

The Universe of the Koran consists of three parts, Firstly Heaven, secondly Earth and thirdly what is between them.

5.

The thing between Heaven (the Sky Dome) and the (Flat) Earth is nothing more that the air above us and things such as clouds and birds that are within it.

3.

4.

Modern Astronomy has discovered that all starts have life cycles and that they go through stages over millions or billions of years and then they die. Some Muslims claims that this referred to in the Koran 1400 years ago when it mentions the Sun running for an appointed term. This appointed term is said to refer to the Sun burning for 10 billions years and then dying.(Surah 13:2 ) Before its death billions of years in the future, the Sun will swell up in Size and become a Red Giant Star which will destroy the Earth. This is also said to be referred to in the Koran. Before Copernicus everyone believed in a Geocentric Universe Nowadays, we know that the Earth is one of several Planets in orbit around the Sun. This idea was first proposed by Copernicus in 1543.Before that everyone thought that the Sun & other Heavenly bodies were just little lights that moved across the Sky over a stationary Earth at the centre of the Universe. It is important to remember this When reading Astronomical References in books from before 1543. (Such as the Bible or Koran)

Copernicus (1473-1543) 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

93

Response to Claim 07 (Surah 13:2 ) 1.

Surah 13:2 makes no reference to Stellar Evolution. The “appointed terms” of the Sun and Moon are merely the hours of day and night. They are not a period of billions of years.

3.

The Koran, like other books from before 1543 assumes a Geocentric Cosmology with the Sun and Moon moving around a stationary Earth every 24 hours.

5.

The Universe of the Koran is not the modern Universe.Nowhere in the Koran is the Earth explicitly described as a Planet in orbit around the Sun.

7.

Anyone who disagrees with this interpretation needs to demonstrate Heliocentric Cosmology in the Koran before assuming it. 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

96

Response to Claim 07 (Surah 81:1,2,6 ) 1.

Surah 81 makes no reference to the Sun swelling up.In fact, it refers to the Sun being extinguished.

3.

These verses refer to Judgement Day and not an event billions of years away. The timescale is all wrong.

5.

Stars are describes as little objects that can fall to Earth. This demonstrates a complete ignorance of the true nature of Stars.

7.

The boiling of the Oceans cannot be due to the heat of the Sun since it has gone out.Verse 12 implies that it is the heat of Hell below that is causing the Oceans to boil, rather than the Sun.

Claim 07 - Conclusion 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Neither Surah 13:2 or Surah 81:1,2,6 describe the evolution or death of the Sun – At least not if you use accurate translations and read them in historical context. Surah 13:2 means the hours of day and night when it refers to the “appointed terms” of the Sun and Moon and not billions of years. Surah 81:1,2,6 describes Judgement Day and the Sun being extinguished without any detrimental effects on Earth. This shows a complete ignorance of modern Science. Surah 81:1,2,6 describes the Sun and Stars as little lights of minor importance. There is no indication of how big and important these heavenly bodies really are. Rather than proving the Koran to be in harmony with Science, these verses demonstrates the opposite.

The metaphor of his light is that of a niche in which is a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, the glass like a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, its oil all but giving off light even if no fire touches it. Light upon light. Allah guides to His Light whoever He wills and Allah makes metaphors for mankind & Allah has knowledge of all things.”

104

Surah 24:35 Checking the context “Allah is the Light of the Heavens & the Earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light . Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things.” “(This lamp is found) in houses which Allah hath allowed to be exalted and that His name shall be remembered therein. Therein do offer praise to Him at morn and evening.” Surah 24:35-36 Pickthall 24th August 2009

10 - Koran Science & Cosmology (Pt 1)

105

Surah 24:35 God is like the light from Oil Lamps inside a Mosque Surah 24:35 compares God with the Light of an Oil lamp which burns inside a Mosque. Islamic Fundamentalists would have us believe that it refers to Nuclear Fusion, even though no such thing is mentioned anywhere in the Koran. They argue that references to Oil Lamps inside a Mosque do not really refer to Oil Lamps inside a Mosque, but rather to Nuclear Fusion inside Stars, even though there are no References to either Stars or Fusion involved.

The wording of the verse clearly says that the words are metaphorical or symbolic and not literal. They refer to Gods light or spirit being in the hearts of people. This is a traditional Muslim interpretation.

5.

Surah 24:36 says that the lamp is within peoples houses and so it cannot be a literal Star.

Nowadays we know that apart from Hydrogen and Helium, all Chemical Elements are Synthesised in Nuclear reactions in Stars. Surah 57:25 is said to be a reference to this, since Iron is one of the many Elements that are created in Stars. Since Nucleosynthesis was only discovered in the C20th, some Muslims claim that its prediction in the Koran is a Scientific Miracle. Such advanced Scientific information is said to be evidence of the Korans divine origin, since Mohammed could not possibly have known of Nucleosynthesis in Stars 1400 years ago. This is said to prove the truth of Islam.

Response to Claim 09 (Surah 57:25) 1.

The wording of this verse is very vague. There is no mention of any Element other than Iron and no reference to Stars.

3.

All the Surah says about Iron is that it came down from the Sky.

5.

A simpler explanation is that this verse is a reference to Iron Meteorites which were known in the Ancient World.

7.

Iron from Meteorites was the oldest source of Iron that Ancient peoples used.

There is no evidence of any reference to Nucleosynthesis in Surah 57:25.Meteoritic Iron is a more likely explanation of this verse.

According to this interpretation, although billions of years have passed since the beginning of the Universe, only six days have passed from Gods perspective. If this claim is true, then why were Muslims not able to say what the age of the Universe was before modern science discovered it? How is it that three different groups of Islamic Fundamentalists come up with three different and contradictory interpretations of the same verse? In the last few years, the age of the Universe has been accurately measured as being 13.7 billion years old.How is it that the Koran supposedly gives ages of 15.750 Billion years old (Harun Yahya) & also 18.25 Billion years old? (Submission.org) These calculations appear to be little more than fiddling with numbers to produce a desired outcome. If in a few years time, Astronomers discovered that the Universe was in fact 50 billion years old, then no doubt, somebody would “discover” this in the Koran as well.

According to the Hadith, the Korans description of the Universe being created in six days refer to six literal days. The Hadith implies that the Universe is only a few days older than Adam. Belief in the characters of the Bible implies that they lived thousands of years before Mohammed.Early Muslim historians agreed with this. Attempts by some Muslims to use the Day-Age theory and claims that the Koran implies the Universe to be billions of years old are just attempts to fiddle with numbers and rescue the Koran from modern Science. The Koran and Hadith imply that the Universe is less than 10,000 years old, just like the Bible also does.

The earliest concept of an Atom was of a solid indivisible particle. This idea was proposed in India in the C6th BC. In the C5th BC, the Ancient Greek Philosopher Democritus proposed a similar idea. In the C7th AD, the Koran is said to have referred to Atoms and things smaller than Atoms which the Greeks or Indians never mentioned. In 1807, John Dalton demonstrated that Atoms are real and not just theoretical.Dalton believed that Atoms were indivisible though. In 1897, JJ Thompson discovered the Electron, and proved the existence of the first of many Sub-Atomic particles. Everything is in a manifest Book, as Allah said.” Ibn Kathir on Surah 10:61 “The All-Knower of the Unseen, not even the weight of a speck of dust or less than that or greater escapes His knowledge in the heavens or in the earth but it is in a Clear Book.” Ibn Kathir on Surah 34:3 Ibn Kathir writing almost 700 years ago would not have had any modern preconceptions or prejudices, yet he fails to detect any references Sub-atomic particles in these verses. This is because there are no such references in the verses. 24th August 2009

Claim 13 - Conclusion • • • • • •

The Koran is not referring to modern Atomic Theory, & probably not even to Ancient Atomic Theories either. The word “Atom” is not the best translation of the Arabic word that can also mean a small ant or a dust particle. Even if the Koran is referring to Atoms, (which seems unlikely) the idea of Sub-Atomic particles had been around for centuries before Mohammed. Perhaps the best translation of the Arabic word translated as “Atom” would be better translated as “the smallest thing you can imagine.” Some modern translators most likely use the word “Atom” as it is the smallest thing that they can think off. Either way, Surah 10:61 & 34:3 are not evidence of any Divine authorship of the Koran.

Claim 14 Nuclear Fission 1. 2.

3.

4.

Nowadays we know that Atoms can be split by Nuclear Fission in an Atomic Bomb or Nuclear Reactor. Such ideas were not known until the early C20th, yet we are told that Surah 6:95 of the Koran predicted Fission 1400 years ago. Such advanced Scientific information is said to be evidence of the Korans divine origin, since Mohammed could not possibly have known of Nucleosynthesis in Stars 1400 years ago. This is said to prove the truth of Islam and provide compelling evidence for unbelievers to convert (or “revert”) to Islam.

Claim 14 - Conclusion 1.

This is one of the most absurd claims of an alleged Scientific Miracle in the Koran.

3.

It is\obvious to anyone reading Surah 6:95 and the verses around it, that the Koran is describing the germination of seeds and not Nuclear Fission.

5.

Any farmer would know about seeds splitting during germination. No miraculous knowledge is involved.

This looks like a classic example of Islamic Fundamentalists reading things into the Koran that are not there. They have stretched the interpretation beyond breaking point.

Response to Claim 15 (Surah 36:36 ) 1.

Surah 36 makes no reference to Antimatter, just a vague reference to male and female living things.

3.

The concepts of matter and anti-matter are nowhere in the Koran.

5.

Interpreting male and female as matter and anti-matter means reading things into the Koran that are not there.

7.

You might just as well say that the I-Ching is divinely inspired as it refers to “Yin” and “Yang” which could be interpreted as matter and anti-matter.

Yin and Yang It is conceivable that Taoists might claim that the references to “Yin” & “Yang” in the I-Ching which was written 1000 years before the Koran really refer to matter & antimatter. This, it might be claimed is evidence that the I-Ching is divinely inspired & that we should all become Taoists. This is no more ridiculous than similar claims made for the Koran. 24th August 2009

Claim 15 - Conclusion •

The Koran is not referring to modern anti-matter any more than the I-Ching is.

Such interpretations are just a fantasy in the minds of Islamic Fundamentalists.

Surah 36:36 is just describing the existence of male and female animals which is obvious for all to see.

This is yet another false claim of a Scientific Miracle in the Koran.

In recent years, a growing number of Scientists are suggesting that there is a considerable amount of theoretical evidence for the existence of Parallel Universes. However, Surah 23:17, 67:3 & 71:15 in the Koran mentioned the existence of Parallel Universes 1400 years ago. Surely, it is argued, a simple illiterate man such as Mohammed could not possibly have known such advanced scientific ideas so long ago unless God had revealed them to him? Such advanced scientific ideas, it is argued prove the divine authorship of the Koran and the truth of Islam In the light of such an overwhelming scientific miracles, unbelievers should convert (or “revert”) to Islam

From reading 12 translations of Surah 23:17, 67:3 & 71:15 it can be seen that only one translation uses the word “Universe.”

This one translation is clearly inaccurate as it is contradicted by the other 11 translations.

It appears that the Khalifa translation is trying to distort the translation in order to make the Koran sound more scientific and modern than it really is.

This is a classic example of rewriting the Koran to make it say things that are not really in it.

4. 5.

This Presentation has examined 16 examples of alleged Scientific Miracles in the Koran and found them to be totally unconvincing. The “evidence” for Scientific Miracles in these 16 examples does not stand up to scrutiny. This “evidence” is based on vague phrases, dishonest or inaccurate translations, taking verses out of context, fiddling with numbers & ignoring the most obvious or traditional interpretation. Different Fundamentalists can make the same vague few words mean completely different & contradictory things. These 16 examples do not support claims of Scientific Miracles in the Koran.More examples are examined in the next Presentation.
