Dear Dermot, I appreciate the kind rema.rks you made in yours of April 6 on my answers to your earlier questionairre. perso~lly, I feel that my answers must have been rather inadequate as a worthwhile contribution to the comprehe~ sive biography on which you are engaged •••• nor do I think that this present reply wi 11 be of much help ei the: Firatly, Dermot, let me make it plain that I 'iid not know Sean Lanass personally. I was only in contact with h~ as a reporter of his speeohes at elections and in thl Dail. On all such ocoasions he impressed me as a very forceful, convincing orator who gave listeners the oOAvietion t~at he himself fir.mly believed in the absolute truth of whatever be was saying. In gener&J., he was extremely co-operative and oourteous with newspapermen irrelp ectiv. of whether or not they represented pro or anti Fianna Fail organa. He realised better than most politicians that PresSIllen were only doing their jOb as individuals, and as, he could always .. be ",-pproached for a good 'quote' or comment without fear of a snub or tebuk. he was very popular amongst the newspaper fraternity.

I think it was during the first Coa.lition or Interparty regime tha.t he acted as Manager or Managing Direct· or of the Irish Press group •. But his heart was always in politics. A colleague told me that during that period he asked Lanasa whether he wasn't glad to be relieved Qf Ministerial responsibility for a while. According to my friend Sean f,plied promptly: "N~, I am eaier to get bate: into office a Ninister as soon as 1 can."

Dear Dermot I am in receipt of your letter of 12th April 1976 and noie that,' you are working on a book on the life of Sean Lemass. Whilst I have had many conversations with him I d6 not remember him making any'quotable quotes which you could use in your book. However I should mention that I always followed his advice and found it to be sound. His capacity was delightful for making decisions. In 1957 after Fianna Fail returned to po~er I had reason to approach him for financial aid for our Tubbercurry industries and within 24 hours he had empanelled a" Commi ttee to interview me and they came to a decision within 24 hours. --.
