Purpose of the Presentation : To increase awareness of issues related to caring for elderly dependants at home. • Elderly people : The ageing process is a biological reality which has its own dynamic, largely beyond human control, age over 75 year

Why the Elderly? • They are sick more often • They suffer more from being in the end stage of various chronic progressive degenerative diseases • They are most likely to lack the capacity to make critical decisions and this makes these people dependent on their family and the local health services

Elderly people in KSA Its main objectives are to evaluate the current health status, The results showed that the number of the of elderly males was higher than that of females and they were older. and 67% reviewed PHC (primary Health Care ) centers visiting from elderly people. a they have group of chronic diseases, osteoarthritis, hypertension , diabetes mellitus and Renal failure were disclosed as the commonest..

Physical changes • Wrinkles and liver spots on the skin. • Change of hair color to gray or white • Hair loss slower reaction • Times and agility reduced ability to think clearly • Difficulty recalling memories

Factors makes Physical changes faster • Bad nutrition • Alcohol and smoking • Emotional problems • Physical problems

Health problem and the psychosocial Health problem -Resistance to infection -Poor wound healing -Osteopenia -Cardiovascular disease -Constipation - Tooth problem.

Nutrition deficiency Porotin and calories -VitaminaA,B6,D,Ezinc -Protein , zinc and vitamin D. -Iron ,vitamin b12 and Zinc. -vitamins, water and dietary fiber. Calcium

Prevention • Regular exercise • Wight control. • Alcohol and tobacco avoided • Regular dental check up .

Psychosocial problem • Lower incomes • Less access to health care services • Lack of health insurance coverage

prevention • Psychological Evaluation is an integral part of medical care . • Training programs for health professionals in the use of collaborative, health care to identify and provide services for psychosocial issues. • Screening of individuals and populations for psychosocial problems that may impact their health and health outcomes.

Elderly people with terminal illnesses

• Most patients with a terminal illness prefer to rest at home. Unless 24-hour home care is available, the involvement of a family caregiver is essential to keep patients who are in need of palliative care at home. However, many patients do not even have the option of resting at home because they do not have a family caregiver or because a family caregiver is no longer able to cope with the burden of care

The nurse role of health promotion for elderly people and his family

Teach the elder and his family strategies self care for the elderly e.g, dental and oral health , foot care. • Give the elderly and his family problem solving and decision making e.g, care preoperative & • postoperative major such as : wound care

• Educate the elder and his family using medical equipment and medication by injection e.g., how to use glucose monitoring machine and insulin or pills.

Heath education • Primary health care which refers to interventions that focus on the individual or family such as hand-washing, immunization, bathing, grooming, food preparation, feeding, administering medications and cleaning of bedding .

• Secondary health care screening for unreported needs to treat before a crisis occurs , bereavement visiting is an important part of the district nurse role in secondary prevention.

• Tertiary health care on the other hand refers to those interventions that take place in a hospital setting such as intravenous rehydration or surgery.

Summary • Many people, including the elderly, their families, health care and social service professionals, and others, are not aware of the Unless home care so we should Public education to increase awareness of this problem and training for health care and social service professionals are needed. educate about Negative attitudes about aging and the rehabilitation Public education programs could be designed to counteract these negative attitudes.
