UNIVERSIDAD DE PLAYA ANCHA FACULTAD DE HUMANIDADES EARLY ENGLISH TEACHING PRACTICE 2009 OBSERVATION STAGE Name of student teacher: Nancy Calderon Name of School: Liceo A 23 (politecnico compùtacional) Number of students: 35 students Date: 12, May, 09

Class: English (6º, 7º, 8º)

Task Nº1: The school Refer to the general background of the school in a clear and brief way. Describe: Physical location, I think that the physical location of the school is very good is central, and is near to the playa ancha community; you easily can get to the school by bus or taxi because the facilities are next to a bus stop.

Organisation, the organisation of the school is normal they have director, sub-director, teacher’s students, cleaning people. Para docentes.

Student population, I think that the population of the school is correct; the school doesn’t have too much student per course so it is ok, and they are divided for the two levels. (Media y basica)

School rules. To be sincere I’m not aware of the rules of the school but I believe that they should be the same that in the others schools.

Task Nº2: The classroom Comment about: The atmosphere of the room, Some times students can be very annoying with the teacher, because when she is talking they are doing the same thing with their classmates, but when we talk with them and we ask for silence they do it. Generally speaking the atmosphere is pretty good

The levels of engagement in the room, I think that the level of commitment is not very good, because students don’t care English they think that they never going a use it, so our task is motivate them.

Students seating, they are sit in couples; looking the whiteboard there are four lines of 4 couples each one.

Space, the classroom is quite big they have space to moving around and we can use that space to perform certain activities in order to learn correctly.

Whiteboard location, the location of the whiteboard is in the front of the class.

Classroom equipment, besides the whiteboard and the furniture there isn’t any kind of equipment .

Task Nº3: The teacher

Describe the following: Classroom routine, in the first place the teacher get to the classroom and every one of the student stand up and say hello obviously in English, them we work in the corresponding unit using the English book.

Motivation activities performed, in order to improve the motivation of the student the teacher and I create some funnies activities, using topics of their interested like sports, music, video games etc.

Material resourced used, we use the English book to work in the units and if they have any doubt we help them. Some time we use different things depending on the activity and also what we want to achieve.

Stages of the lesson, first we explain the activity, them we give some minutes to complete the activity depending on the difficulty of the task and them we make a short and quickly review of it. Task Nº4: The learners In this observation task, focus on the things that help to create conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play a part in preventing learning.

How motivated are the learners? Why? They don’t care about learning another language for the simple reason that they don’t think is going to be useful for them in the future.

Are they taking part in their own learning? How?

I think that as I said before they don’t want to learn another language that’s why I believe that in my area they are not taking part of their own learning maybe because they just want to finish the school and them work in any thing.

Are they expecting the teacher to do the work for them? In general the students in the classroom that I attend don’t have initiative and they expect foe the teacher to tell them what to do.

Do they like to participate in group work? If so, how do they behave? I don’t know because I never saw them work in groups.

What kinds of learning activities do the students like the most? What do they like the least? What they like the most is work whit topics of their interested just like a said before music, video games, sports in general pop culture and what they dislike the most are the quizzes.
