INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF SKULLS y las líneas de nazca, Perú. eeeee Clasificación PG-13

La cuarta aventura de Indiana Jones regresa este verano. Una de las películas más esperadas por los fanáticos de Indy, Harrison Ford y Steven Spielberg. La historia está relacionada con los cráneos de cristal de cuarzo. Indiana Jones en esta ocasión se lanza a la aventura de encontrar un cristal de cuarzo que la unión soviética tambien busca, bajo las ordenes de la coronel Irina Spalko (Kate Blanchet) en el camino se topa con su Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) quien le pide ayuda para encontrar a un viejo colega Harold Oxley (John Hurt). Así llegan a Perú donde se reencuentra con Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen, Raiders of the lost ark) la madre de Mutt. Irina se mantiene muy cerca de Indy, ya que piensa que los cráneos son de origen extraterrestre y el poder que tienen sobre la gente puede ser usado como arma para dominar el mundo. Nota: En la vida real este tipo de cráneos existe, inclusive algunos son de

igual forma al mostrado en la película. El argumento está basado en rumores sobre posibles bases extraterrestres en el desierto de Nazca, Perú donde se encuentran las famosas Líneas y geoglifos de Nazca y de Pampas de Jumana. ¿qué son estas líneas y por qué son tan famosas? En el area de Naza y Palpa de Perú, fueron trazadas cientos de líneas y figuras que van desde simples diseños como líneas rectas, hasta complejas figuras zoomorfas, fitomorfas y geométricas en la superficie terrestre. Lo más asombroso o misterioso es que éstas sólo pueden ser apreciadas en su totalidad desde el aire, al sobrevolar el desierto. Lo cual sin duda, ha despertado dudas y preguntas sobre las intenciones y el origen de las mismas. La cultura Nazca fue la que habitó esta región y a quienes se le atribuye la autoría de dichas líneas. Sus pobladores vivieron entre el año 200 A.C. y el 700 D.C. Se cree que probablemente primero hicieron las figuras y después las líneas. Sin embargo, las pruebas de carbono 14 para tratar de confirmar estas dudas no ha dado resultados exactos para poder hacer un orden cronológico de las figuras y líneas, debido en parte a las características del suelo. ¿por qué no se borran? El clima sin duda

aéreos para poder ver las asombrosas figuras desde el aire, ya que son apreciables en todo su esplendor sólo a gran distancia del suelo. Existe un mirador en el km 419. En Indiana Jones y el reino de la calavera de cristal se pueden apreciar cuando Indy y compañía hacen el viaje a Perú.

KUNG FU PANDA eeeee

La historia gira en torno a Po (Voz de Jack Black) un regordete panda que ayuda a su padre en su restaurante de fideos. Po es accidentalmente nombrado Dragon Warrior (el dragón guerrero) arrebatándole el título a los 5 discípulos del maestro shifu (Dustin Hoffman) quienes son legendarios en el pueblo por su destreza en el arte del Kung Fu. El maestro Shifu furioso, ahora debe entrenar a Po.

Basada en la vida de Gengis Kan, el famoso emperador mongol que unió las tribus nómadas en Asia. La película tiene partes que los mismos historiadores debaten sobre la exactitud y/o veracidad de los hechos. Debemos tomar en cuenta que la tradición escrita es posterior a la vida de Gengis Kan.

Temujín es despojado de su sucesión al puesto como líder de la tribu cuando su padre Esugei es envenenado. Los ayudantes de su padre, deciden robar a la tribu ahora que su líder ha muerto y de paso juran matar a Temujín cuando éste crezca. Temujín sobrevive gracias a la ayuda de Jamukha (Honglei Sun). Ambos serán mejores amigos y peores enemigos en la vida. Temujín o Gengis Kan es interpretado por el japonés Tadanobu Asano como adulto, y por Odnyam Odsuren como Temujín el niño. La historia permanece mas o menos cercana a los hechos, aunque con algunas libertades para poder hacer más rica la trama. Se rumora que ésta es sólo la primera de 3 partes.

THE HAPPENING 91 minutos

Por Lucía Santiago Dantés M. Night Shyamalan, director de “The sixth sense”, Unbreakable y Signs; regresa con The Happening, una película muy al estilo de las antes mencionadas cintas. En esta

ocasión explorando un tema ambientalista que visto a través del lente de M. Night Shyamalan es combinado con el miedo a lo desconocido. Una especie de epidemia surge en Nueva York donde las personas muestran síntomas de desorientación al principio, seguido por actos incoherentes y finalmente el suicidio. Pronto el incidente se propaga a escalas masivas arrasando poblaciones externas, nadie sabe lo que esta pasando y es atribuído a un acto terrorista. La historia juega muy bien con el suspenso, e invita a reflexionar sobre la posibilidad que, de la misma manera que nosotros producimos anticuerpos para sanar de nuestras enfermedades, sea la madre naturaleza quien acabe con nosotros.

La historia es vista y contada desde el punto de vista de Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) un maestro de ciencia quien junto con su esposa Alma (Zooey Deschanel), Julian (John Leguiziamo) y la pequeña Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) salen de Philadelphia huyendo del mortal fenómeno.

Una de las películas más esperadas este verano es sin duda Sex and The City. Para los que no están muy relacionados con la historia aqui va un pequeño recuento. Sex and the City originalmente fue una columna escrita por Candace Bushnell en el New York Observer, donde escribía sobre sus aventuras que a ella 0y a sus amigas le ocurría, es decir algo tiene de cercano a la realidad la serie. La columna tuvo tanto éxito que se volvió libro, de ahí HBO compró los derechos para hacer la serie de TV que todos conocemos con las 4 inseparables amigas: Carrie interpretada por Sarah Jessica Parker; Samantha es Kim Kattrall, quien aunque nacida en Liverpool, fue criada en Vancouver; Miranda Hobbs (la abogada) es Cynthia Nixon; y Char-

lotte York es Kristin Davis. Al principio de la película hay una secuenciacompendio de los líos amorosos de cada una de ellas. Así sabemos de las andanzas de Samantha, el malogrado matrimonio de Charlotte, la familia de Miranda y la tormentosa relación a través de los años de Carrie con Mr. Big (Chris Noth) como se le conoció por años en la serie. No fue sino hasta el último capítulo, y en la escena final, que nos damos cuenta de su verdadero nombre. La historia de estas cuatro inseparables neoyorkinas de corazón es retomada en “Sex and the City, the movie” varios años después de que Carrie y Mr. Big se reencuentran en París. Charlotte a pesar de sus esfuerzos infructuosos termina adoptando a una niña de ahora 3 años y Samantha sigue su relación con aquél atractivo mesero por el que peleó fieramente

una noche en un bar, mejor conocido por Smith (Jason Lewis). Carrie y Big después de varios años de pareja, por fin dan el paso de vivir juntos, pero se preocupa cuando al ir a una subasta escuchan la historia de ésta: una modelo convertida en actriz, convertida en novia de un millonario es echada de su propia casa cuando su flamante novio millonario la deja por otra mujer. Carrie se siente insegura y platica con Big, pues tiene miedo como buena mujer, de acabar en la calle de la noche a la mañana. Ambos

deciden casarse y pronto la noticia corre como reguero de pólvora. La boda excede las expectativas no sólo de ambos sido de toda la gente que la rodea. Lograrán ambos soportar la presion?

El super agente 86 regresa, pero esta vez a la pantalla gigante! Maxwell Smart, esta vez es interpretado por Steve Carell (The Office), mientras que Anne Hathaway (The Devil wears Prada) interpreta a la famosa agente 99. La película muestra al Super Agente 86 o Maxwell como un aspirante a agente secreto. Aunque pasa el examen para convertirse en agente, le es negado el puesto, ya que es muy eficiente en su actual puesto. Su oportunidad se le presenta cuando la base central donde los agentes trabajan es asaltada y todos los agentes son expuestos. La oportunidad para Maxwell se presenta pero la super agente 99 no está muy contenta de tenerl a Max como su compañero. Si te gusta la serie, te gustará la película.

“ORACULAR SPECTACULAR”

Por Lucía Santiago Dantes ** Votado por la revista Rolling Stone como uno de los 10 artistas a observar este año.

Cualquiera que no haya escuchado a MGMT en estos días, seguramente debe vivir bajo una roca o al menos en el universo paralelo de la gente fuera de onda. MGMT sin duda representa uno de los mejores y más avant-garde grupos en la escena musical este año. Sólo basta escuchar a su album debut “Oracular Spectacular” para entender a lo que me refiero.

Su música es una extraña mezcla de influencias, sonidos alucinantes reciclados de la música psicodélica, que se convierten en el sonido de MGMT una vez que han logrado combinar estos estilos aunados a su propio sonido, ideología sarcástica que se aprecia en sus letras y su mentalidad un tanto hippie. Podríamos llamarlos, los nietos del “summer

MGMT es un dueto formado por Andrew Van Wingarden y Ben Goldwasser. Se conocieron mientras estudiaban música en la prestigiada universidad de Wesleyan, una escuela un tanto selectiva, privada y artes liberales en Middletown, Conneticut. Cómo sucedió? Un acto de serendipidad, o al menos así lo relatan ellos: “no estábamos tratando de grupo”, “estabamas simplemente pasando el rato, mostrándonos lo que nos gustaba” Por esos días comenzaron a tocar en el dormitorio de la universidad con el nombre de “The Management” su nombre cambió a MGMT por razones legales, al momento de incorporarse como banda formal. Ambos se mudaron a Brooklyn, Nueva York. A que suena MGMT? El sonido de su música es un tanto orgánica, psicodélica y Pop (si esta combinación puede ser posible) Pero si escuchas y ves el video “Time to Pretend” entenderás a lo que me refiero. Las letras de esta canción son un tanto sarcásticas, es una reflexión de la vida de las estrellas de rock “let’s make some music, make some Money, find some models for wives… the models will have children, we’ll get a divorce, we’ll find some more models, everything must run its course”. Vancouver, BC Mayo 26 Por Lucía Santiago Dantes Modas, corrientes, grupos musicales vienen y van con el paso de los años, pero pocos son tan recordados y queridos en lationoamérica como The Cure. Si tomamos en cuenta que el grupo surgió a mediados de los setentas, tenemos que son 3 décadas de The Cure.

Robert Smith ya cuenta con 49 años pero como los buenos vinos el paso de los años sólo institucionalizó a The Cure en el corazón de sus fans y en la historia oficial de la música. Para muchos, incluyéndome a mí, representa la banda sonora de la película de nuestras vidas. Como muchos estudiantes y jóvenes lo hacen hoy día, escuchaba a The Cure en el carro, en la escuela, en el autobús, caminando con mi walkman siempre a ritmo de Disintegration,

Three Imaginary Boys o Wish por citar algunos de sus discos. Amén de toda la “The Cure” parafernalia que tenía en esos días. Aún conservo con orgullo muchos de esos recuerdos como posters, discos LP, recortes de periódico, mantas etc. Inclusive el famoso libro azul autografiado por sus integrantes en el año 1992 cuando fueron a Monterrey NL. México.

Todos estos recuerdos tanto para mí, como para muchos, se agolparon en nuestras memorias el pasado mayo 26 cuando The Cure, luego de posponer su concierto originalmente programado para octubre 9 del 2007 fuera todo un evento memorable en la vida de sus fans quienes esperamos ansiosamente un año, guardando sigilosamente nuestro boleto en el cajón de nuestro escritorio, baúl de los recuerdos o protegido bajo 7 llaves y 7 hechizos lejos de las manos y miradas indiscretas. Los meses, las lluvias y días de invierno pasaron hasta que el glorioso momento llegó. El grupo telonero de The Cure en esta ocasión fue “65 days of Static”, de quienes prefiero reservarme mi opinión, ya que no me causó gran impresión. Por supuesto abrieron con Open, y al ritmo de Fascination Street, Close to Me, In between days, boys don’t cry, Love song, Just Like heaven, etc etc etc bailamos, brincamos y coreamos las canciones en el General Motors Place, mismas que años atrás brincoteamos en algún bar de Monterrey con los amigos y cerveza en mano, o con el modular a todo lo que daba en nuestros cuartos. A varias décadas de su largo historial discográfico Robert Smith sigue conservando su voz intacta, así como su colección de guitarras que son ahora

una extensión de su personalidad, como la Gretsh Silver Falcon, Gibson Chet Atkins semi-acoustic, su Fender Bass VI y su guitarra de 12 cuerdas la Gibson Reverse Firebird famosa por su programa acústico en MTV. Simon sigue siendo un maestro del bajo y que decir de Porl quien hasta tiene su propia linea de guitarras en la compañía Schecter guitars llamada “Porl Thompson Corsair Bigsby”!! El diseño gráfico de la guitarra fue creado por Kev Grey un famoso diseñador gráfico inglés. El concierto duró 2 horas con 48 minutos, teniendo 3 encores donde tocaron sus clásicos como Lovecats, Caterpillar girl, close to me y why can’t I be you? Entre muchas otras, cerrando con A Forest canción escogida en más de una ocasión para cerrar sus conciertos donde el bajo se queda con las ultimas 2 notas en eco, provocando una atmósfera única. No importa que hayamos esperado un año para disfrutar este concierto, los esperaría uno y mil...y varios años más, The Cure es uno de los pocos grupos que vale la pena presenciar y escuchar.

Si no asististe a esta tocada sólo te puedo decir una cosa: De lo que te perdiste! Fue un evento como pocos en Vancouver; sobretodo porque aparte de Said The Whale, tocaron 2 grupos muy buenos: Lotus Child y Maurice. La fiesta/tocada fue en el Biltmore Cabaret, donde todos los jueves son destinados a grupos de rock Indie.

ito con su canción “This city’s a mess” sobretodo el viral video de la canción, posteado en you tube. En vivo el grupo suena muy bien en vivo, tienen presencia en el escenario y saben prender a la banda con sus canciones. Su nuevo disco se titula "Howe Sounds/ Taking Abalonia" y sale a la venta el 31 de junio. Su primer sencillo lo presentamos aquí en la versión en vivo tanto como en su versión original posteada en youtube. Sobresalen sus canciones “This Winter I retire” y Bank of the English Bay. Éstas como muchas de sus canciones, tratan sobre la vida cotidiana en Vancouver. En este pequeño set de videos presentamos un poco de la tocada del 5 de junio, incluyendo a Lotus Child, seguida por una entrevista de archivo hecha por CBC radio a Said the Whale y por último los videos originales de Said The Whale.

Las puertas abrieron a las 9 de la noche y ya comenzaba a llegar gente. Una media hora más tarde la tocada comenzó con el grupo telonero Maurice. El grupo toca bien pero ninguna canción memorable (todavía), no me gustó casi tocaron a oscuras eso de hacer preferencias pensaba que ocurría sólo en México o Latinoamérica pero Para los que se ya veo que en Canadá perdieron el conciertambién son así. Po (Jack Black) is a chubby panda who works with his father in a noodle shop, his dreams of becoming a great kung fu fighter accidentally become true after landing in the middle of the ceremony to choose the “Dragon warrior” among five of the best warriors around the area: Monkey, Tigress, Mantis, Viper and Crane. Although Master Shifu thinks this is a mistake, Oogway thinks there are no accidents. Everything becomes at stake when Tai Lung an evil warrior, escapes from prison to claim the title he thinks he deserves.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (praise him or hate him) The Happening mixes the environmental topic with suspense, a trademark for Shyamalan. In this occasion a strange phenomena takes place in New York and hundreds of people commits suicide. The first symptom is disorientation; the second is a series of incoherent talk or erratic behavior followed by suicide. The incident expands to what it is considered by the media a massive terrorist attack. Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is a science teacher who decides to leave the town with his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), Julian (John Leguiziamo) and little Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez). On their way out, the train stops to leave everybody in the middle of nowhere. They’ve lost communication with everybody. The pilgrimage continues with a series of events, which lead them to an explanation.

Based on Genghis Kahn biography, Mongol tells the epic story of Temudgin, a boy who later in life becomes the first emperor of the Mongol empire. While traveling to get a wife, Temudgin’s father is poisoned by an enemy tribe. According to tradition he inherits the title as Kahn or supreme chief, instead his father’s men rob him, and expels him and his family from the tribe. Temudgin later sets out for his wife and meet his best friend and later in life enemy Jamukha. Although it is based on facts, it is a fictional drama. It is rumored to be the first of a trilogy directed by Sergei Bodrov. Mongolian with English subtitles.

Based on the classic series from the sixties Get Smart take us back to the early days when Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is just an analyst at a secret spy agency called CONTROL. Max just passed the test for becoming a spy agent when the agency is attacked by nemesis agency KAOS. So Max becomes an agent and he’s assigned to partner agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), who’s already has her doubts about agent 86. Max has to prove he is worthy enough for both: job and partner. For the TV show fans everything is there: the attraction between agente 86 and 99, cool gadgets, chasing & fight scenes, etc. for the younger audiences a treat: Masi Oka from Heroes as Bruce, a developer of high tech gadgets. Decadent, delicious, delightful fun is to be had with the big screen version of Sex and The City. Aim high and one can be richly rewarded. Where does one begin to describe the carnal cravings of this quartet of forty something women? Let’s start from the top as two of the girls are the pivotal cogs in this welloiled machine that effectively chronicles the ups and downs of aging and trying to “hook” up with true love. Main New York bright light Carrie Bradshaw continues to be the centre of attention as she’s still single and pining for man of her dreams Mr. Big. Against all odds the two decide to get hitched. Naturally, the storybook wedding and follow-up honeymoon goes a little bit off course.

fast-tracking women. Loads of fun with style and panache blossom on screen as the very essence of consumerism is shown with reckless abandon here. Under all those designer labels and pangs for love are some very genuine moments with feelings bursting to the surface. Each woman in this piece has loads of screen time with her “significant” other and those oh so wicked flings. Sarah Jessica Parker (Smart People) undergoes quite a metamorphosis in this tale of wanting that storybook wedding. How she reacts to her affair with Mr. Big is front and centre in this film that will grip you like no other. Just as much fun is the man hungry Samantha Jones, delightfully played with reckless abandon by British Columbia born Kim Catrall (Porky’s). On hand also to cheer the girls on are mainstays Miranda and Charlotte, exquisitely portrayed by Cynthia Nixon (The Babysitters) and Kristin Davis (The Shaggy Dog).

Good friends Charlotte York, Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes are not just women in waiting but turn out to be solid shoulders to cry on when the going gets tough. Hard times await each of these women as the ins and outs and grunts and sighs of all those interludes with men get wickedly skewered under a very witty script.

Man of the hour Mr. Big will either steel hearts or make one want to kill. Under the able delivery of Chris North (Mr. Brooks) our Don Juan will have you either cheering or hissing him on. Super chemistry between North and Ms. Parker just intensifies the huge larger than life presence this film succeeds in pulling off.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF SKULLS eeeee

By Robert Waldman. as the wicked witch of a KGB operative who delights in tormenting (and torturing) our American professor who leaves the books behind as he gets hooked again on some quest to save the world. Legacies are made. Heroes are born. After a decades long absence good buddies Steven Spielberg and George Lucas finally answer some prayers with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Worth the wait, moviegoers get to thrill as the man in the hat returns for more mischief and daring feats as only Harrison Ford can deliver. Yes, the former carpenter still has it in him to do battle with the bad guys, and in this case one very evil woman.

Ford does not really show his age at a svelte 65 and has all the charm as in his youth, giving off one-liners by the dozens and surprisingly making them all work flawlessly. Fun with his age eases us into the action that begins stateside and hop scotches to the jungles of Peru. Past friends resurface with a new enemy named Irina Spalko who just oozes evil. Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) hams it up and wins hearts

One reason it took so long to green light a new Indiana Jones adventure was due to the film schedules of Ford and Spielberg and the difficulty of coming up with the right story. Lucky for us everything has finally come together and the result is two hours of fun. Escapism never felt better as the action sequences are outstanding. One big plus is the casting of Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) who I would stay steals the show as Mutt Williams, a slick-backed greaser who winds up in an even bigger mess when he hooks up with our Mr. Jones.

Full scale fun awaits all who venture into the delightful world of renowned archaeologist Indiana Jones who doesn’t seem to have lost a step since his inaugural run during Raiders of the Lost Ark. Well, maybe half a step.

A very intriguing film directed by Claude Lelouch better known for his 1966 film “A man and a woman”. Teaming up with Dominic Pinon(Delicatessen(1991), La Cité des enfants perdus (1995), Amelie(2001)) Roman de Gare is an intriguing film focusing on the crossing paths of 3 characters: Pierre Laclos, a ghost writer of a popular novelist called Judith Ralitzer (Fanny Ardant) and Hugette an annoying hair dresser who’s left behind by her fiancé in a gas station. On the radio, we hear the news a serial killer escaped from a prison in Paris. Pierre offers Huguette a lift at the gas station, but is he really who he says he is?

HORS DE PRIX Directed by Pierre Salvadori, this is the French 2006 version of the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Hard player, sexy, irresistible, that’s Irene (Audrey Tatoo (Amelie,2001)) a beautiful woman who knows how to play her cards well, While Jean (Gad Elmaleh) is a shy waiter at a luxury hotel. Mistaken by a millionaire, Irene seduces Jean, but when she finds out who he really is, she leaves to the Côte d’Azur. Jean follows her adopting her lifestyle in an attempt to win her back.

child and Maurice. The gig as I said was at the Biltmore Cabaret, where every Thursday is dedicated to local independent bands. The doors opened at 9pm and there were already people lining up at the door. It was a little bit chilly outside, considering it was almost summer and no signs of temperatures rising up. As soon as we got inside, everybody looked for a good spot to hang out while the bands set up for the gig. Most of the people, as usual, got some drinks to kill some time and warm up. By 9:30 the first band was about to start, it was a Victoria based group called Maurice. You can check out their music at http://www.myspace. com/mauricemusicband I had to do a special note here, Maurice played almost in darkness. Although it is common to reserve the best lighting for the main group of the night, it is annoying from my personal point of view. The second group was Lotus Child, they did get better lighting but not the best. Again, you can check out their music where else? My space again: http:// www.myspace.com/lotuschildband Maurice and Lotus child were very well received among the concurrence. The time arrived to Said the Whale and by that point it was the highest moment of the night. They opened load and clear with their current single “This city’s a Mess”. A song that’s currently promoted with a music video with people dressed in as furry animals (always cool) needless to say, it’s a
