ctubre, y las hojas de los árboles comienzan a caer, esta vez más perezosamente que otros años como ya nos hemos podido dar cuenta. Quizás es el resultado del calentamiento global.

El vancouver Film Festival seguro es un evento muy importante en la ciudad, y no digo a nivel galas, fiestas o carpetas rojas. Es mas bien a nivel público y muchas veces, a nivel personal, en la fila para entrar a las películas he podido platicar con muchas personas, y he encontrado que muchas personas piden sus vacaciones de 2 semanas (anteriormente celosamente guardadas) para poder asistir todo el día y dedicarlo completamente a ver películas. Sólo así se puede explicar que haya tanto asistente a las funciones. Paralelo a este evento, los cineastas podemos asistir a conferencias, fiestas y paneles de discusión para poder intercambiar opiniones y platicar con los colegas. Cambiando de tema, el pasado 3 de octubre pude ver a algunos viejos camaradas de la ciudad de Monterrey, el fabuloso grupo Kinky! quienes visitaron por primera vez tierras canadienses.

fter finally accepting that Invasion was cancelled I though for a while that life indeed sucks, but then I saw Salma Hayek’s Ugly Betty, Heroes and Gilmore Girls on its seventh season and I though somebody up there likes me! ;O)

And also, After all the ups and downs of VIFF, life smiled at me again when in a strike of luck; a friend got us free tickets at the best section of Cirque du Soleil. Indeed “with a little help from my friends” life is good again! ;OD And since God likes me just the way I am, The Good Creator threw at me the best band I ever wanted to see in concert: Kinky!

Ok here is the story: I lived in Monterrey, NL México many moons ago, and one day, I heard about Kinky, on those days Kinky was the cat’s miau in Monterrey. Unfortunatly when I was studing film here in Vancouver, and went back to Monterrey only for a few days during Christmas. Sometimes I’ve missed their concerts for just a few days away but I always kept my hope of being on a Kinky concert. On top of that I know some of them from previous groups, I remeber we all hanged out at the same pubs and bars in the city, but my life kept going always with the sting of never been on a Kinky concert. I’ve got their records and everything but something was lacking. But one day... I correct: One busy day! I saw a poster on the street. I wasn’t sure I will have time for the concert, because of all the things I have to do for my company and all the publicity I have to hang out everywhere. But Fortune was on my side that night and I could meet and chat with them for a while. It was like going back to Monterrey city in a second! Even the day was exactly as it is in Monterrey most of the time: sunny and bright. Chatting with Carlos, he told me they don’t live in Monterrey city anymore, which is a shame. But in order to become better artists I think they’re right. You have to go out and see the world to have a better perspective. Anyways that’s how I ended up in one of the best concerts I’ve been in Vancouver. The other concerts? The Pixies in 2004. Part of this community is my friend Ramiro Padilla. He is now in India, and that’s how I did ended up publishing this photographs and a little bit of Ramiro’s narrative in El Kiosko Magazine. I hope dear reader, you enjoy this number. English Little Children Rating: By ROBERT WALDMAN Vancouver International Film Festival Little Children (14A) Born Innocent! Children are the lifeblood of society. Parents have tremendous responsibility when it comes to raising little ones. Current couples face the pressures of living in a busy world in Little Children, a searing look at troubled relationships from Alliance Atlantis Releasing now fuelling emotions everywhere. Sure to be a major contender at this year’s Oscar celebrations, director Todd Field (In The Bedroom) again pulls off a terrific drama complete with real life issues that are as topical and current as they come. Those who like complex, interconnected treatments such as those depicted in Crash and Traffic will field right at home with Little Children. Field weaves a very tangled web of intrigue in East Wyndam, Massachussetts. Don’t let those tranquil, melancholy tapestries of the suburbs fool you. A group of women and men are facing major choices on their lives that may just affect more than their inner circle. Here the action focuses on two married couples. Needless to say, not all is well in paradise. Bound together through their kids, Sarah Pierce comes across as a caring mom. Just the type of lady handsome Brad Adamson would go for had they not met others earlier. Now each is married with kids of their own. Brad makes the perfect stay at home dad to his young son while Sarah has her hands full with Lucy. Chance encounters between the pair prove that they may have more in common than just the children. Each is relatively well off with successful spouses. For example, Brad is married to stunning Kathy while Sarah has all the conveniences a woman could want at home. Whether their respective husbands/ wives makes them happy is another question. While our thoughts are wondering just what my occur between these two adults the community also faces the scariest thought in the world: a child abuser may be on the loose. Lots of mays create loads of uncertainty as we get under the skin of all the main players in this dynamic portrait of people trying to cope with their busy lives. Outstanding acting from the entire cast sets Little Children apart from most good dramas/movies. Both Kate Winslet (All The King’s Men) and Patrick Wilson (Hard Candy) PAG. 4

come across as everyday people trying to figure out their lives. Expect huge uncertainty with this pair. Just as sobering is the element of child abuse that is tactfully handled and effectively depicted. Work by Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) further establishes the depth of acting in this film which is paced just superbly for 130 minutes. So much is going on inside this cliquish community you’ll be struck by the layers performances and way things end up. Strong scenes on serious subjects make Little Children easily one of the best film of this or any other, year. Manufactured Landscapes (G)

By ROBERT WALDMAN Manufactured Landscapes (G) By ROBERT WALDMAN Progress is a two-edged sword. Citizens of the world must take responsibility for their actions if we are all to survive. High level development around the world could prove dangerous to our health if things go unabated. Concerns about the environment and our future are not necessarily doomsday scenarios. Director Jennifer Baichwal takes us on a global visual fiesta through the work of Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky with Manufactured Landscapes, an eye-opening story from Sony Pictures Classics and Mongrel Media now enlightening folks at Vancouver’s Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Today we live in a global community. What Burtynsky has done here is look at some recent examples of development that few people on the outside have seen. Here the point is that urban sprawl that goes unchecked can be problematic in the extreme with dangers to our water, land and health itself placed in jeopardy.

Revealing film footage of gigantic factories in China, shipbuilding efforts in Bangladesh and an unbelievable dam project again in China showcase the huge urbanization that’s currently raging on the Chinese mainland. Folks in British Columbia know all too well the scenario: countries ship their raw products to China (and other third(?) world countries where labour rates are low and new products are assembled to be sold in the west. Manufactured Landscapes tells the tale of what happens to those communities where ordinary people are displaced and the environment gets pressure in ways leading to pollution and other negative effects. Smart commentary flushes out the true story of this urban sprawl. Photos of the boom in places in China like Shanghai is downright scary as there’s no telling how this rapid modernization will affect the future not only of their land but the global community. Negative shots at the dam site were censored but this film gives a rare glimpse of the pattern of change currently being fast-tracked complete with the building of 27 nuclear power stations to help fuel the boom. Under Mao’s rule 90% of the land was supposed to be for agrarian purposes while the government of today only allots 30% to agriculture. Such a drastic shift in policy may well come back to haunt China as it’s thirst for energy and raw products may ultimately prove more harmful than good. Stark, telling and somewhat frightful, Manufactured Landscapes is a great gem of a film that looks at the dangers of progress if undertaken in a vacuum. This last week, the Enterprise crossed the final frontier of CBC-Paramount pictures when Christie’s Auction House sold the models on a bidding war of determined fans. The starship model used for the pilot and title sequences reached the final bid of $576,000 US saturday. The ship was buit by Industrial Light and Magic. The Acution took over a total of $7.1 millions in set furniture, pointy vulcan ears and other props.

VIFF 2006

Little Children Little Children es una de esas películas que se hacen sin grandes presupuestos y despliegues tecnológicos a comparación de otras cintas de Hollywood; pero que está haciendo mucho ruido dentro de la industria cinematográfica y sobretodo en los círculos de los festivales de cine y la crítica. Está basada en la novela homónima de Tom Perrotta, sin embargo el guión es reescrito por el mismo autor en colaboración con el director Todd Field. Modificándolo un poco para la pantalla grande, la historia toma fuerza a través de un microcosmos social, donde varias historias se desenvuelven creando una enredada telaraña de hechos que cada vez se va complicando más a tal punto que los personajes quedan atrapados en ella. Sarah interpretada por Kate Winslet, es una mujer casada con hombre que aunque le da todas las comodidades que necesita, ignora a ésta y a su hija. Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) es un hombre joven, atractivo y con un hijo al que cuida mientras su esposa trofeo es la que se encarga de trabajar y mantener a la familia. Un día Sarah y Brad se conocen en el parquecito donde llevan a sus hijos a jugar, pero con el paso del tiempo esta relación profundiza hasta transgredir sus propias barreras. En relación a esta vida oculta, hay otra paralela que se desarrolla, la de un pervertido llamado Ronald (Jackie Earle Haley) quien ya tiene cargos en su contra y es mal visto por la sociedad. El hombre realmente tiene serios problemas y su madre, se preocupa mucho por él, pues sabe que no puede durar mucho. Little children es una película que la crítica, al igual que yo, espera sea nominada al oscar, espero que así sea pues es una de las mejores películas que he visto este año.

The Departed La nueva película de Martin Scorcese se estrenó este fin de semana en carteleras con opiniones son encontradas. Con un casting estelar que incluye a legendarias figuras de la pantalla como Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Walhberg, Alec Baldwin y Martin Sheen entre otros, la película tiene sus pros y sus contras. Basada en una trilogía de acción china llamada “Infernal Affairs” scorcesese toma esta historia y hace una versión condensada de 3 películas en una. La historia gira en torno a la mafia irlandesa, la corrupción policiaca y dos jóvenes policías infiltrados en ambos lados de la ley: Billy interpretado por Dicaprio, se infiltra en la mafia irlandesa; mientras que Colin (Matt Damon) es un policía que le pasa información a la mafia. Jack Nicholson interpreta el papel Frank Costello, la cabeza de la mafia irlandesa en la ciudad de Boston Massachussets. Aún con todo esto, la historia es buena y sobresale el trabajo de edición y las actuaciones del casting, por lo que no me sorprendería que obvieran alguna nominación al oscar, aún tratándose de un remake. Mientras que el principio es algo lento, para la mitad de la historia en adelante la historia toma agilidad e interés, la película contiene muchas escenas de violencia por lo que fue catalogada como clasificación R (Restringida).

El VANCOUVER FILM &TELEVISION FORUM se llevó a cabo de el 27 al 30 de septiembre como una actividad paralela al Vancouver International Film Festival,, que consiste em una serie de conferencias y talleres dedicados a la gente que trabaja en la industria de cine, los cuales estuvieron formados por grupos de expertos en el area de cine y televisión que comparten experiencias en la industria.Hubo paneles muy interesantes como: Career Fast Track, The Actor/Director realtionship, writing Low Budget Screenplays, y Case study: Everything’s gone green. Este año estuvieron como invitados figuras y creativos de la industria tales como Joel Cohen, uno de los guionistas de los simpsons, SookYin Lee, actriz de la película Shortbus y ex-videojockey de Much Music, quien habló sobre la relación director-actor desde el proceso de Casting hasta el momento de la filmación. Así como la impotancia que tiene tener una buena relación con todo el equipo de trabajo. De la película canadiense “Everything’s gone green” se presentó Paulo Constanzo y Steph Song. También estuviero el director de la película”Quinceañera” y el actor/director Beau Bridges, mejor conocido por su trabajo en “The Fabuluous Baker Boys”. The Vancouver Film & Television Forum (27-30 september, 2006) closed with huge success this year. Kinky en Vancouver Recién tuve la oportunidad de presenciar el concierto de la banda inicialmente regiomontana Kinky. Realmente fue un verdadero placer recordar viejos tiempos con la banda, pues también viví en Monterrey algunos ayeres atrás. Kinky esta realizando esta serie de conciertos para presentar su nuevo disco titulado “Reyna” y pronto estará en Toronto. Carlos, Omar. César, Gilberto y Ulises apenas y estuvieron unas cuantas horas en la ciudad de Vancouver, según nos comentan sólo alcanzaron a conocer las aduanas, la carretera, el puente y los alrededores de el “Richards on Richards” que fue donde se presentaron. Pero aún con la brevedad de su visita fue todo un placer escuchar de nuevo sus grandes exitos que los dieron a conocer así como las canciones de su nuevo disco “Reyna”, el cual salió a la venta a finales de septiembre. Su música prendió a los asistentes que fueron al “Richards on Richards”, quienes la mayoría eran de diferentes partes de la república mexicana. Incluyeron sus éxitos de Más, Mirando de Lado y Noche de toxinas. La banda invitada para abrir su concierto fue Gram Rabbit. Grupo emergente que tiene mucho futuro. Me dio mucho gusto ver que Kinky tuvo el poder de convocatoria para atraer a la población joven y flotante de habla hispana que aunque disfrutaron el show de Gram Rabbit, se volcaron al escenario tan pronto salió Kinky al escenario. Al principio el público estaba muy a gusto disfrutando el concierto, pero para la tercer canción la gente se puso a bailar y prenderse, para casi el final del concierto un chico sacó su bandera de Mexico y a “camachito” como le decimos en México se subió al escenario a disfrutar por unos segundos de la compañía de Kinky. Acto seguido fue cordialmente invitado a retirarse del set por seguridad. Español Tech Tips Nueva generación de retrovisores. El nuevo invento de Mitsubishi es una verdadera ocurrencia. Gracias a la nueva tecnología de pantallas LCD a alguien es esta compañía se le ha ocurrido la idea de poner una pantalla plana en vez de el espejo retrovisor normal de su carro. A su vez, una pequeña camarita en la parte trasera de su automóvil captará lo que ocurre en la parte trasera de su carro. Muy útil cuando se trae el carro lleno de chucherías en la parte trasera. Diseñado para los camiones y vehículos pesados. Saldrá al mercado en noviembre de este año con un precio de $550 US dlls.

Nueva serie de cámaras digitales de Samsung. La nueva cámara de la Samsung es una muestra de la gran competencia que existe actualmente en el mercado de las cámaras digitales. La nueva NV10 posee una imagen más brillante, más nítida y más detallada. Al dejar pasar más luz permite tomar fotos en lugares más oscuros. Como las otras cámaras en el mercado tiene la opción de grabar video comprimido en mpeg-4 a una resolución de 640x480 y a 30 cuadros por segundo. Incluye batería recargable vía USB. Por último los lentes Schenider son una excelente opción para tomar fotografías por lo que hace una gran opción a considerar si todavia no tiene una cámara o busca reemplazar la que tiene. Precio: 349 US.

True Me, Biometrics. Una nueva manera de autentificar su identidad.

True me representa una nueva manera en internet que autentificar la identidad de alguna persona utilizando las huellas digitales. Esto elimina el hasta ahora riesgoso proceso de contraseñas, identidades o “usernames” por medio de un aparatito que a la presión de su dedo lo reconoce. El aparato se conecta a la computadora vía USB. Por supuesto no es la única versión del sensor de huella digital, hay varias compañías que ya están trabajando en ello, pero hasta ahora no se sabe cual será el más popular. Esta es sólo una versión.

English & Español Ramiro Padilla se encuentra actualmente estudiando en la India, y desde ahí nos envía estas fotos y algo de información sobre su cultura y las festividades Ganesh Chaturthi, en honor al dios Ganesh. This is a statue of Ganesh, on a parade float on its way to the ocean. This festivity basically consists on the following: A group of friends, neighbors or families get a large (the bigger the better) statue of Ganesh; they keep it in their homes (where Ganesh is the guest for ten days); and on this day (Sept 6th) they parade all the way to the ocean and let it float away...(I could be wrong, don’t quote me on a paper or anything). So there are literally hundreds of thousands of figures of Ganesh being deposited in the water today. Pretty impressive!

Esta es una imagen de Ganesh, en un desfile rumbo a la bahia. La tradicion basicamente consiste en que cada familia o grupo de amigos compra una imagen de Ganesh en esta temporada, se la rolan de una casa a otra durante una semana (onda posada mexicana), y en este dia en particular llevan la imagen hasta el mar, y entre todos la meten al agua, donde se desintegra de volada (las figuras estan hechas de arcilla). Y como hay 20 millones de habitantes en Mumbai, el dia de hoy se depositan en las diferentes playas de la ciudad literalmente cientos de miles de figuras de Ganesh. Impresionante!

Editor’s Fall Picks

John Fluevog is one of Vancouver’s hippiest shoe designer. The company started on the early seventies and it’s been sought as a great example of what Canada has in store for celebrities, musicians and artists around the globe. The shoes are made in Poland, Portugal and Vancouver. John Fluevog is the original creative designer but some of his ideas como to him in dreams, so technically speaking the credit goes to God. There are many celebrities who wears Fluevog’s designs including some early shoppers back in the seventies like Robert Altman, and more recently Madonna, Marilyn Manson, the Dandy Warhols, Perry Farrel, Sally Field just to mention a few among the list.
