Commodore’s Comments Hello again and may I give all of you a hearty welcome to the 2004 Season! And yes, it’s the 99th continuous summer of fun and fellowship at EYC. Let’s hope for good wind and high water. Your board and staff are planning a terrific season of activities, so get ready to enjoy all that is offered. The following pages will highlight a few of these plans. As you have correctly concluded, the 100th Regatta season will be here in 2005 with the Club’s 100th Anniversary year coming up in 2006. Many wonderful plans are under way to celebrate. The Chair for these events is Nancy Claypool with Don Nelson. Please read the enclosed important announcements so you can enjoy participating in these exciting events. The current year offers some new and exciting sailing opportunities as outlined in David Sauter’s article. You won’t want to miss out on this new program at EYC. Also note the special articles covering our traditional events throughout the summer. Every year the Club has the privilege of adding some wonderful folks to our membership. To those of you just joining, I add my hearty welcome. You will soon know what a fine choice you have made and how enriching your EYC

experience will be. Please feel at home at your facilities and join in on the fun. We all look forward to meeting you in person. George V. Carey Commodore

EYC Centennials on the Horizon By: Nancy Claypool

Yes, it’s hard to believe, but our very own Ephraim Yacht Club is approaching two important centennial celebrations. EYC will be celebrating its 100th Annual Regatta in the summer of 2005 (by the way, that’s next summer!) followed by the 100th Anniversary of the Club in 2006. At the winter board meeting, the directors reviewed a preliminary schedule of proposed events. We’ve started the planning process and we’d like to let all our members know about some of our plans and encourage everyone to be involved. For the 100th Regatta, we hope to add a few events to our regularly scheduled activities. The Saturday before the regatta, we'd like to host a powerboat rally for our powerboat members, as well as resuscitate some of the oldest activities that have been held at previous regattas. These include kayak, canoe, rowboat, swimming, inner tube and/or raft races, a greased watermelon contest, log rolling, and a tug of war on inner tubes. Do any of these sound familiar? We thought it might be good to schedule these events the week before as a pre-regatta warmup, so that all of our racers can participate in them as well.

We plan to invite some special guests from the sailing world to join us and to be on hand for the whole regatta weekend. On regatta Friday, we're hoping to offer a special racing clinic, followed by an afternoon tune-up race, capped off with an evening fish boil as a welcome reception for all club members, regatta participants and guests. Remember the Baby Beauty Contests? These were held on regatta Saturday as an on-the-dock activity for those too young to be out on the race course. On Sunday, we will have a special trophy presentation, including reviewing the history of the club trophies and inviting past winners to be recognized. Moving on to 2006. For the 100th Anniversary of the Club, we will again add a few activities to our schedule. At some point during the season, we will have an afternoon boat parade (with boats of all types) and "costumes from yesteryear". We would also like to schedule some type of special bridge activity in recognition of the role that bridge has played at the club over the years. And finally, we want to have a 100th Anniversary Banquet. This would be held in conjunction with the Commodore's Cocktail Party. It would be a sit-down dinner function with a silent auction fundraiser. Our afterdinner presentation will include an introduction of former commodores and a slide presentation of the history and highlights of the club. This is just an outline of our preliminary ideas. We are still in the planning stages and are looking for suggestions. Maybe you know something about log rolling. Maybe you

2

organized the Baby Beauty Contest once upon a time. Maybe you've been a silent auction chairman at another event and could lend your expertise to our fundraiser. Maybe you're willing to offer lodging for special regatta dignitaries. Remember, events such as these can ONLY be successful with volunteers. We would like all members to actively participate in these events if possible. The Board has asked me to coordinate both of the 100th celebrations, along with Don Nelson. Please let us know how you want to help. Both of these events will be great fun for the whole club, and remember, they're just around the corner. If you have ideas, suggestions, or are willing to volunteer, please contact us at the following: Nancy: E-mail: [email protected] and [email protected] Phone: (504) 899-0935; Cell: (504) 251-3926

Please welcome them, and give them your support.

2004 Staffing By: George Carey

This year’s staff will be composed mostly of veterans from last year plus two new members. Returning staff members are: Skipper Harsh as director, Larry Lewis, Travis Lyon, Hugh Haggerty, JP Pillat, Christian Pillat, and Jason Brown. Joining for the first time as staff, but not as strangers to EYC, are Allison Chase and Ashley Edwards.

First Mates By: Linda Carey

Most of us are away from beautiful Ephraim for the 6 to 10 months that aren’t “SUMMER”. Soon we will happily return, and we look forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new ones at EYC. What better way to accomplish that than by coming to a FIRST MATE’S COFFEE. Whether you have been attending these gettogethers for many years, or are a firsttimer, we will be delighted to see you. We welcome your input as we begin to put together ideas for all the social activities that we plan and produce for our club members. Mark your calendars now for 2 Monday mornings, June 14th and July 12th. The coffee will be ready by 9:30…see you at the clubhouse!

Learning To Sail! Get your reservations in now. Due to the continuing success and popularity of the EYC Sailing Education Program we encourage you to sign up NOW. To maintain a safe and successful program, the class sizes are being limited to a first come first served basis this summer. All sign-ups must be in no later than the Friday prior to each session’s starting date, and will only be accepted if space is available. To address the continued growth of the

3

program, and the requests for younger students to participate, the EYC is excited to announce a new program. Introduction to Sailing and Water Sports Safety is available to students of age 8 and older that have not had prior sailing instruction. It is intended to introduce the basic elements of Sailing, as well as teaching safety on the water, in a fun environment which will encourage the students to continue in the program. This two week course will coincide with the other session’s starting dates and will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. We strongly encourage younger children, new to sailing, to begin with this program. The cost is $80 per session with each session limited to 10 students, so sign up early! We will also continue the adult education program this summer. Larry Lewis is again our lead and we encourage any interested adults to contact him directly about dates and times. This continues to be a popular and fun group!

EYC Junior Activities-2004 By: Debby Heidler

We all look forward to a new season of EYC JUNIOR events! The gatherings are for EYC youth ages 9 and up, and are always enthusiastically attended. 2003’s events included the following: Dinner at the EYC/Red Putter, scavenger hunt, beach picnic, progressive dinner, Door Shakespeare, hiking in Peninsula State Park, movie night, and some really wild watermelon football. Back by popular demand in 2004—Dessert and

dancing at the Crowe’s, the sailing picnic (weather permitting) and a trip to American Folklore Theater!! The activities are successful as a result of the many volunteers who contribute their time and talent to the events! YOU can be a part of Junior Activities! Your support of the program is needed on several levels: event coordinator, driver, meal/drink provider, etc. Please check your calendar—let me know when you’re available and which event you’d like to help with and how (maybe you have a suggestion for a new activity)—YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Plan Ahead-Join in The EYC Explorer’s Fun!! By: Debby Heidler

EYC EXPLORERS needs YOU!! This group must have a coordinator in order to continue. The summer of 2004 will be the 4th season of activities for the EYC EXPLORERS, if a coordinator steps forward. The EXPLORERS was created to provide group activities for kids who are not yet old enough to take sailing lessons, but want to join in the EYC fun. Parents, or grandparents, must accompany their child/children during the scheduled activities. Questions? Please call Debby Heidler at (630) 655-2548 before June 11, and at

(920) 854-7427 for the remainder of the summer.

NEWS FLASH! By: Ryan Malmgren--Race Chair & Fleet Captain

2003 Malmgren Race Clinic begets 2004 RULES CLINIC You heard it here first: this year’s annual Malmgren “Race Clinic” is going to focus less on boat-speed, and more on the new/improved race rules, as found in the 2001-2004 US Sailing Rules Book. I will try to provide a somewhat interactive educational experience on this otherwise dry topic (note pun). Please bring yourself, and/or your sailing kids to the clinic! Attention EYC ladies regatta participants: Some of you have asked for this opportunity, hope you will attend. Good news/Bad news: Good -there will be door prizes for all attendees*. Bad -- there will be a quiz, and it is not optional. Good -- you will score your own quiz. *ok, so there may not be door prizes… but at least your chances of making an unhappy call to your insurance adjuster -- and/or being tossed from a regatta -- will be reduced.

Question: What does “FSSA” stand for? Any idea? Many of you haven’t. That probably explains why only fifteen EYC members are currently Flying Scot Sailing Association members. There are many good reasons to join the FSSA: for one, you will be supporting one of the strongest one-design class associations in the world. The strong

5

class adherence to the one design concept means that the Flying Scot built this year will remain compatible and competitive for years to come with newer as well as older boats. Also, the FSSA helps promote the Flying Scot -which maintains the boat’s popularity and value. Not only that, but if you join you will receive a copy of Scots n’ Water every two months. This publication has all kinds of useful information on various topics (examples: folding a spinnaker, shimming the centerboard trunk, improving your starts, Scot sailing stories, race results and schedules). Additionally, belonging to the FSSA makes you eligible to compete in district, regional, and national regattas. If you still aren’t sure, please go to www.fssa.com and you’ll see why our class association is one of the very best. You will also be able to view, and read a sample copy

of Scots ‘n Water: PS: You do not have to own a Scot to join -- and can sign up for as little as $30. Please help support our class association! NEW COMPUTERIZED RACE SCORING SYSTEM

.

This year we will be implementing a new race scoring system (Java handicap). This means we will have clearer, more accurate scoring than ever. Additionally, David Sauter will be able to post series scores and regatta scores on the EYC website.

Boats and Motors By: George Reynolds

The EYC fleet will be up and running as usual, but with some changes. The Sunfish fleet has been, well, let’s say, aging. Most of the Club-owned boats have to be replaced, which has prompted the EYC Board of Directors to review the use of Sunfish in our beginner youth training programs. The Board has decided to adopt the Optimist for our beginner boat. The Optimist is now the boat of choice around the world for beginning sailor programs. The Sunfish has been a great boat at EYC and members who own them will still find some race opportunities available at the Club. A few Club Sunfish will be retained for recreational member-use. The use of our Scots and JY 15’s will remain the same. Therefore, the EYC Club boats will now consist of Optimists, JY 15’s, and Flying Scots. Attention Power Boaters! Your club would like very much to provide boating activities for you in the way of social floats, or other events that would be fun for our non sailors. All we need are some volunteers to get the ball rolling. Please contact George Reynolds if interested.

EYC History By: George & Linda Carey

LAST CALL Time is running out for our research on the EYC History book. Your chance to participate will conclude by mid July. Please send any old photos or other memorabilia to us soon. The book will be ready for purchase at the Commodore’s Anniversary Reunion Banquet, August 2006. The Banquet will be combined with the Commodore’s Cocktail Party in that year.

150 Years For The Village Of Ephraim By: George Carey

Many of you will recall last summer’s wonderful activities surrounding the Village’s Sesquicentennial. One of the popular activities for our club members was the Venetian Night parade. Those participating in the event will recall the thunder and lighting show during the event with special reverence. Since that time I have had many people express interest in doing it again! Well, it’s going to happen as one of our Club Anniversary events. Please read the article by Nancy Claypool. She will need your help and support. So get involved, join in, and have fun! BRIDGE By: Suzanne Lisle

Bridge will follow the same schedule as last year with open play on Monday afternoons (gathering at noon for lunch, begin play at 1:00 p.m.), and Tuesday mornings (9:00 a.m.). Any member is welcome to play at those times with no advance notice or registration. Open play will begin on June 7 and June 8. Information on bridge instruction was sent with the dues and lesson forms mailing in February. Members who have registered for one of the two lesson groups will be starting on Tuesday, June 15 or Thursday, June 17. (1:00 p.m. either day). Your cancelled check will be confirmation you are enrolled. As of this writing, both classes are almost filled, but if we have additional requests, we will start a wait list.

A Gentle Reminder: Please submit your dues payments early to make sure that you are included in the directory and that your changes, if any, may be made in time. Your prompt response helps to curb mailing and copying costs as we do send out second requests for members who have not responded. Thank you.
