NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. MAGNESIUM SULFATE (MgSO4)
Central nervous system drugs
Used as anticonvulsant. Lowers intracranial pressure. For hypomagnesaemia in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Prevention and control of seizures in toxaemia (preeclampsia or eclampsia). Inhibits uterine contractions in tocolysis (pre-term labor). Also used for the treatment of lifethreatening arrhythmias such as atypical ventricular tachycardia(torsades de piontes). Counteracts intense muscle stimulating effects of barium poisoning.
Patients with heart block or myocardial damage.
an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; hives; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting);heart disturbances; breathing difficulties; poor reflexes; confusion, extreme tiredness or weakness; low body temperature; severe headache; fainting; rash or flushing; vision problems; or nausea or vomiting.
Flushing, sweating, hypotension, muscular weakness, sedation, confusion. Neuromuscular blocking agents. An excess of Mg ions in the body fluid causes direct depressant effect on skeletal muscles, decrease, release of acetylcholine by motor nerve impulses and reduced sensitivity of the motor and plate acetylcholine.
>Assess patient’s condition before therapy and reassess regularly thereafter to monitor drug effectiveness. >Monitor for signs of Mg toxicity: disappearance of knee-jerk and patellar reflexes are signs of early Mg toxicity. > BP monitoring, and hold if BP is <80/60>withhold if urine output is <30 cc/hour>withhold if respiration <12 cpm> Keep I.V. calcium gluconate at all times to reverse magnesium intoxication.(↓ RR, ↓ BP, ↓ UO)
2. Amoxicilin
CARDIOVASCULAR DRUGS-Calcium Antagonist
Infections of the resp. tract, skin & skin structures, paranasal sinuses, genitourinary tract, otitis media, sinusitis, meningitis, septicemia
: Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, penicillin, or any component of the formulation
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea may occur.
Central nervous system: Hyperactivity, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, convulsions, behavioral changes, dizziness Dermatologic: Acute exanthematous pustulosis, erythematous maculopapular rash, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, hypersensitivity vasculitis, urticaria
>obtain pt’s hx of allergy >Assess pt for any s/s of infection >Assess for pt’s sensitivity to penicillin ot other cepalosporins >assess for allergic rxn during therapy >Assess for bowel pattern
