Philip D. Zelikow EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

9/11 Closed by Statute I I

As you know, at our April hearing Director Tenet was asked about meetings with the President during August 2001, and could not recall whether he had had any such meetings. While we did not file a formal document request on this matter, I did, on behalf of the Commission, ask you to look into the matter and provide us with any relevant documents and information. I appreciate your cooperation and responsiveness on this matter. The purpose of this letter is to memorialize what you have reported to me, to make sure we have a clear understanding for the record. Please respond by confirming the accuracy of what follows, or correct it in any way appropriate. The Director met with the President on August 17, in Crawford, Texas, and on August 30, in Washington. The August 30 meeting was a regular morning briefing after the President had returned to Washington from his Texas vacation. The Director's calendar and other CIA records provide no indication of the purpose or nature of the trip. But Director Tenet now recalls that he was present at the PDB briefing on August 17. He has no recollection of any other discussion with the President that day. The PDB for August 1 7 was not among those produced for limited Commission review in response to our document request, and you have confirmed that it does not deal with al Qaeda or related terrorism issues. Sincerely,

)aniel Marcus General Counsel
