The Bible says... Zechariah was a priest. One day when he was working in the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. Gabriel told Zechariah that his wife, Elizabeth, would have a baby boy. The angel told Zechariah to name the baby John. Zechariah did not believe the angel. He said, "How can this be? We are old!" So God would not let him talk until the baby was born. Zechariah wanted to tell Elizabeth everything that had happened, but he could not talk! 2 | Jesus: God’s Son, Part 1

Luke 1:57-58 When the baby was born, everyone came When it was time for to see him. They asked, “What is his Elizabeth to give birth, she name?” They thought the baby would be had a boy. Her neighbors and relatives heard how named Zechariah like his father. good the Lord was to her, and they rejoiced.

Everyone was amazed that Elizabeth said the baby's name was John. No one in the family was named John! It was a custom to name the first born son after the father. Do you think the baby should be named Zechariah, like his father?

But his father wrote, “His name is John.” Then Zechariah could talk again. He began to praise God.

The Bible says... Mary was a young woman who lived in the town of Nazareth. She was going to marry a good man named Joseph who was a carpenter. The angel, Gabriel, told her she would have a son and His name was to be Jesus. Lesson 1: The Birth of John the Baptist / The Birth of Jesus | 5

Matt 1:20-21, 24 Later...an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph...Don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The baby in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You will name the son Jesus. Give Him that name because He will save His people from their sins...When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to do. Joseph married Mary.

Many weeks later, Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem because the Roman ruler ordered everyone to write their name in a register. Mary was getting close to her time to have God's child, but they had to obey the law. 6 | Jesus: God’s Son, Part 1

After a long journey, Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem. There were many people in town who had come to register their name. All the inns were filled. The only place they could find to spend the night was in a stable.

Luke 2:6-7 While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have the baby. She gave birth to her !rst son. There were no rooms left in the inn.
