Dealing with Doubt Genesis 45:16 last week Joseph revealed himself to his brothers after Judah spent time pleading with Joseph for the sake of Benjamin Joseph broke down crying and he told his brothers “I am Joseph” He gave to his brothers complete forgiveness after he tested them and saw that their repentance was genuine He did not hold a grudge against his brothers instead he said in verse 5, “for God sent me before you to preserve life.” and in verse 8, “So it was not you who sent me here, but God.” He acknowledged that God is able to make good come out of evil Last week we answered the age old question, if there is a God why does evil exist......The greatest evil that was ever committed in all of history was 2000 years ago on the cross of Calvary when an innocent man, Christ Jesus was crucified for crimes he did not commit. Out of that evil God was able to bring about the greatest good. God was able to bring good out of Joseph's hardships which included being sold by his brothers into slavery in a land where Jehovah God was not worshiped, being falsely accused by his masters wife and sent to prison for a crime he did not commit, being forgotten by the cub bearer and God was able to bring good out of it and literally save the nation of Israel through Joseph. Josephs dreams of his brothers bowing down to him have come true and now today we are going to see this family come another step closer to full reconciliation as Joseph sends his brothers back for their father, Jacob in this passage today, Pharaoh is pleased and tells Joseph to send his brothers back to get their father and come enjoy the best that Egypt has to offer He also says in verse 20 have no concern for your goods for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours We can see the connection here Joseph has went on before and prepared the way and has come to send for his father to come. In order to come Jacob cannot be concerned about the goods he has because he as been offered the best of Egypt Jhn 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also. Like Jacob we can't get too concerned about the possessions we have here in this world
Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Tonight I want to focus on verses 26& 27 the doubt of Jacob Now remember that God has a plan for Jacob also Genesis 35:1011 And now he is being called to leave this land that God has brought him too, he has been suffering through this severe famine, he thinks that Joseph is dead and possibly Simeon and Benjamin This is the land where the nation of Israel is suppose to be birthed and his sons were to be the twelve tribes of Israel and now he is being called to leave this land and his response is to doubt his “heart became numb for he did not believe them” After all of this Jacob begins to doubt. I have titled the message tonight dealing with doubt
Doubting is a common experience among Christians. If you have never doubted anything, it may mean that you have never thought seriously about anything. The only way to never doubt is to never use your mind to question and try to figure anything out. So, not only can you be a Christian and still have some doubts, but you can hardly be a Christian without doubting at times. After all, if doubting was not possible, faith would not possible either. The only way there can be no doubt is for there to be no alternatives or choices. Doubting does not mean that your faith stops, it means you are trying to understand your faith at a deeper level. Rather than being afraid of doubts, we should allow them to take us to deeper experiences of faith and understanding. Turn in your Bibles if you will to Mark 9:2324. Mar 9:24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help
thou mine unbelief. There are a couple of instances in the Bible where people dealt with doubt. One was John the Baptist Luk 7:20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? The other was Thomas, who we even call doubting Thomas Jhn 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. G. Campbell Morgan had already enjoyed some success as a preacher by the time he was 19 years old. But then he was attacked by doubts about the Bible. The writings of various scientists and agnostics disturbed him (e.g., Charles Darwin, John Tyndall, Thomas Huxley, and Herbert Spencer). As he read their books and listened to debates, Morgan became more and more perplexed. What did he do? He cancelled all preaching engagements, put all the books in a cupboard and locked the door, and went to the bookstore and bought a new Bible. He said to himself, "I am no longer sure that this is what my father claims it to bethe Word of God. But of this I am sure. If it be the Word of God, and if I come to it with an unprejudiced and open mind, it will bring assurance to my soul of itself." The result? "That Bible found me!" said Morgan. The new assurance in 1883 gave him the motivation for his preaching and teaching ministry. He devoted himself to the study and preaching of God's Word.
Be Honest to God about out Doubt Jacob was honest about his doubt it says he did not believe, John the Baptist was honest, Thomas was honest., the father who asked Christ to help with his unbelief was honest. Sometimes we feel guilt or like something is wrong with us if we have doubt so we aren't honest with God about it or with others You may find encouragement to be honest by remembering that God is all knowing, there is nothing that can be hidden from Him which means that he already knows about our doubts The Psalmist said, Psa 44:21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
If you have noticed a pattern in the Bible and in life, when difficulty comes it is usually the cause of doubt
For Jacob it was the famine, For the Father it was his child that needed healed, for John the Baptist he was in prison, for Thomas it was his Lord that had just been crucified.
Examine the Evidence When he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived." (v. 27) Jacob resisted the news from the sons . . . but he couldn't resist the evidence. He had sent his sons away wondering if they would ever return. Not only did they return with Benjamin and Simeon . . . they returned with the supplies they sought and also with extra food, donkeys, wagons, new clothes and much, much, much more. In this time of famine there was only one explanation: they were telling the truth. Instead of staying in his doubt Jacob began to examine the evidence
Jesus gave the evidence to John the Baptist-He quoted from the prophet Isiah 35:5-6 God gave Thomas the evidence to examine when He stood before him and said, Jhn 20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust [it] into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. God has given us the evidence in the resurrection of Jesus Christ Mat 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. -The resurrection is the most documented event in human history, it is the central message of our preaching and teaching The reason that God gave us so much evidence to the resurrection is so that we could examine it and make a logical decision We also have power evidence of lives that are being changed through the Gospel and the power of prayer
Make a choice Sometimes we just want to hang on to our doubts, talk about them, ponder them but never do anything about them. We must examine the evidence and then make a decision Two men started out preaching together they called them the “gold dust twins” both had to make a choice as to whether or not they really believed what they were preaching one man was named Charles Templeton, the other Billy Graham You are called upon after being honest with your doubts and looking at the evidence to make a choice on the day of Pentecost 3000 people made a choice Act 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Act 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added [unto them] about three thousand souls. After Thomas was confronted with the evidence of the Lord Jesus Christ Jhn 20:26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: [then] came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace [be] unto you. Jhn 20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust [it] into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. Jhn 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. In this text we are looking at today we are told that when Jacob saw the wagons that Joseph sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. He had to make a decision to believe it or reject it You can't straddle the fence in the area of faith
