Our Lord is coming What are we to do? 1 Corinthians 15:50 next week will be our last week in the book of 1 Corinthians We have been studying about building a holy community in an unholy world The blessed hope in this passage today, this community, this family of believers in Christ. It is not just a group of people that meet together here on the earth, it is an eternal community, an eternal family that one day will be together with the Lord. Our Lord is coming back for his church! Estimated there are over 1845 references to the Second Coming of Christ in the Old Testament. * 17 Old Testament books give the Second Coming prominence. * In the New Testaments 260 chapters, there are 318 references to the Second Coming of Christ. * This is one 1 out of every 30 verses! 23 of the 27 New Testament books refer to this great event. * For every prophecy concerning the birth of Christ there are 8 looking forward to His return! It is not a legend, fairy tale, or myth. The Bible is been right 100 percent of the time on prophecy the Bible is been right 100 percent of the time on history confirmed by archeology. So I am persuaded that the Bible is right when it says that Jesus is coming back open your bibles to the last book, the last chapter Act 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Jhn 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also. The Apostle Paul wrote about the coming of the Lord to the church in Thessaonica in 1 Thessalonians 4:13 We have confirmation of the Angels in Acts 1 and the Apostles In 1 Thessalonians and Jesus himself in John 14 and in the book of Revelation
It is because of the coming rapture that Paul is able to say in verse 54 and 55 death is swallowed up in victory, o death where is your sting and O grave where is your victory?, then in verse 57 he breaks out in praise saying but thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ I know that most of you hearing this message today already believe in the coming of the Lord, though we do not know when he will return we base our trust that he will since God is not a man that He should lie, nor has any of the prophecies in the Bible ever failed
Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. So, today instead of focusing the message on the coming of the Lord I want to draw your attention to verse 58. IN verse 58 we find what we as brothers and sisters in Christ should be doing while we await His coming.
Three things we should be doing since we believe in the rapture of the church First, be steadfast We should be steadfast which means we should be fixed on the resurrection of Christ. Since Christ is raised we also shall be raised. We should keep our minds and hearts focused on the return of Jesus 2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. When we remain fixed on this truth are hearts are not troubled by the news that is going on around us. For we look for a new heaven and a new earth wherein dwells righteousness The ball player stays focused on the ball, the hunter stays focused on the prey, the fisherman stays focused on the bobber, the runner stays focused on the finish line The Christian is to stay focused on the rapture how often we allow ourselves to get off focus and we get all bent out of shape about trivial matters
Second, Be immovable
Don't allow yourself to be moved away from the hope of the Gospel Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love Some people allow themselves to be moved. You must be convinced of the hope that you have in the gospel to the point that nothing can move you to the left or to the right We are in the last days and there are a lot of “new” ideas “new” doctrines that claim to be of Christ Eph 4:14 That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Paul told the church in Galtia I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ are are turning to a different gospel In Galatians 1:6
Third, be abounding in the work of the Lord If the Lord had told us when he was coming – we would have just sat and waited....but instead we are to abound in the work of the Lord What is the work of the Lord allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us........ Because of the rapture we know that there will be a day of reward for those who have abounded in the work of the Lord The rapture is our motivation to do the work of love in the world Gal 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Hbr 6:10 For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." John Wesley At the height of WWII, Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was imprisoned for taking a stand against Hitler. Yet he continued to urge fellow believers to resist Nazi tyranny. A group of Christians, believing that Hitler was the Antichrist, asked Bonhoeffer, "Why do you expose yourself to all this
danger? Jesus will return any day, and all your work and suffering will be for nothing." Bonhoeffer replied, "If Jesus returns tomorrow, then tomorrow I'll rest from my labor. But today I have work to do. I must continue the struggle until it's finished." Daily Bread, November 10, 1991.
Act 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Dan 12:2 "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
