Experience Unique Central Illinois Towns ARCOLA Arcola shares with Arthur, Ill., the oldest Illinois Amish settlement, the fourth largest in the world. Midwest Living magazine listed Arcola along with Arthur in the top 100 “Best Small Town Getaways.” Arcola offers more than Amish. The famous Rockome Gardens theme park is located in Arcola, and presents a wide variety of shows including “Wildlife Encounters” and “Wild West Show,” all ongoing through Aug. 31. The annual Wine & Cheese Festival will be held Sept. 26-27, in conjunction with Art on the Lawn. There’s a “Great Train Robbery” at 3 p.m. every day, followed by a shoot out! Call 217-268-4106 for more information or visit www.rockome.com. Two annual festivals attract thousands of visitors to Arcola. The Original Raggedy Ann & Andy festival is in early June, and the Broomcorn Festival is Sept. 11-13, with special entertainment by the Lost Trailers. The Broomcorn Festival celebrates the historical connection of Arcola to the cornlike tasseled crop from which brooms are made and to the continuing manufacturing of brooms and broom-related products. The world’s only authentic Raggedy Ann and Andy museum on Main Street is managed by the granddaughter of Johnny Gruelle, who was the master illustrator and children’s author who created the Raggedy Ann story. He was born in Arcola. Visitors to the museum will see historic papers, illustrations and dolls. Be sure to visit this year, because the Raggedy Ann & Andy Museum will be closing at the end of 2009 indefinitely. Arcola’s Illinois Amish Interpretive Center introduces visitors to Amish culture. The center will be hosting the “You, Me and the Fencepost Festival,” Saturday, May 2, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibition, “Between Fences.” The

Old Order Amish Share Way Of Life With Visiting Guests ARTHUR The town of Arthur is the heart of Illinois’ largest Amish community. It has been called one of the Midwest’s best getaways by Midwest Living magazine. Arthur, located 10 miles west of I-57 off exit 203, is an easy, one-tank trip with plenty to see and do. Home to over 4,000 Amish people, Arthur is the central focus of this Amish community. Hundreds of small shops, both in town and across the Amish countryside, make shopping more like an exploration. Wood furniture, quilts, crafts and antiques are all available in the immediate Arthur Amish area. Lots of events happen in Arthur for fun weekends of summer travel. Coming up in June is the Strawberry Jam, community garage sales and Merchant Attic sales. A craft and antique show is held in downtown Arthur on the third Saturday of each month. Arthur is home to one of the largest small town firework “freedom” celebrations anywhere. Call 1-800-722-6474 for a complete calendar of events. For refreshments, be sure to stop in at Dicks Pharmacy, 118 S. Vine, a traditional pharmacy serving old-fashioned, worldfamous sodas, malts, shakes and their own handmade drumsticks. Learn more about this unique shop at www.dicks-pharmacy. com. Vine Street is Arthur’s main business
street, home to a wide variety of shops. Visit the showroom at Wilson’s Kitchens & More, the largest Amish showroom in Illinois. It offers much more than just kitchen cabinets. It is one of the few businesses in the area that custom build the complete cabinet in-house, blending the wishes and desires of customers with exceptional experience and skill. The showroom is located north and west of downtown Arthur. The friendly staff at the newly remodeled Arthur’s Country Inn can’t wait for visitors. They are the only motel in the area that provides front row seating to watch the Amish buggies that travel by regularly. Stay at the Arthur’s Country Inn while enjoying a relaxing, slow-paced visit to Arthur Amish country. Check them out at www. arthurscountryinn.com. Stop by Roselen’s Coffees & Delights, 1045 E. Columbia Street (Route 133), the one-andonly Amish owned coffee shop in Illinois – quite possibly the world – where they pour a “latte” cheer, one cup at a time. This unique coffee shop is a good place to grab a delicious wrap, flat bread sandwich or salad on the go, or eat in along with the local Amish having their lunch. Top the meal off with soft-serve ice cream, choosing from a variety of flavors, or a cookie made by a local bakery. Helmuth Custom Cabinets has been in the custom cabinet business for 45 years,

Cuba has a one-of-a-kind attraction in the Fanning US 66 Outpost and General Store’s huge rocking chair, now in the Guinness Book of World Records. This amazing feat of engineering stands 42 feet 4 inches tall. One of the town’s famous murals is painted on the side of the Outpost, depicting a vintage Route 66 scene. John Bland, who designed the store’s rocker, painted the mural. Outpost owners Dan and Carolyn Sanazaro have made the rocker available for local fundraisers. On Aug. 1, the local fire
department will sponsor a Lift to the Rocker. They will use their bucket truck to lift people to the rocker seat for photos. All proceeds will benefit the fire department. This summer, plan on visiting Cuba for the Crawford County Fair, July 15-18, with rides, livestock shows, bull riding and a host of other attractions. Find out more about Cuba online at www.cubamochamber.com, and www.crawfordcountymohistory.org. Historic Old World Towns Welcome Visitors HERMANN In 1837, a scouting committee from the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia selected a site for a cultural refuge in Missouri. The land, now known as Hermann, was teeming with wild grapevines, and reminded its founder, George Bayer, of his native Rhine River region in Germany. Today, the area boasts a number of notable wineries, museums, shops and restaurants. Spring events begin in earnest in May. May 2-3 is the Hermann Norton Wine Trail. Follow the trail to six local wineries for special cellar tastings and an in-depth look at Norton, America’s true red wine. This event, sponsored by the Hermann Wine Trail, is by advance ticket purchase only. For more details or tickets, visit www.hermannmo.info. May 16-17 is Maifest, the town’s annual spring celebration. The event features winery tours and tastings, live German music and

plenty of German food. Stone Hill Winery will be taking part in all of these spring events. With more than 160 years of rich winemaking heritage, Stone Hill is an intriguing union of Old World history and new world technology. Using French-American hybrid grapes such as Vidal, Chardonel and Vignoles, Stone Hill makes sophisticated wines that compare favorably to popular varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Norton, the pride of Stone Hill, has been dominating national and international wine competitions, proving that Missouri can produce a big, fullbodied red of world-class stature.
