Fall For East Perry County Fall is a great time to discover East Perry County, Mo., an easy 90-minute drive from St. Louis off I-55 in Southeast Missouri. Settled in 1839 by Saxon Lutheran immigrants from Germany, residents are proud of their heritage as evidenced at the Saxon Lutheran Memorial (SLM) in Frohna. The log cabin village is dedicated to the immigrants’ pioneering spirit, their homesteading lifestyle and the beginning of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. On Saturday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., SLM will host its 28th Annual Fall Festival. History will come alive with artisan demonstrations, log cabin tours, horse and wagon rides, activities, food, fun and more. For “the best little fair in the land,” visit the East Perry County Community Fair in Altenburg on Friday, Sept. 25, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 26, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details, visit the Perryville Chamber of Commerce Web site at www.perryvillemo. com. While in East Perry County, a “mustsee” is the Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum in Altenburg. The museum displays the history of the Saxon Colonial immigration and the origins of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Tourists are also invited to enjoy Missouri wine at the family-owned and operated Hemman Winery. Located in an 150-year-
13
old country store in Brazeau, the winery has been making wine for generations. It specializes in sweet and semi-sweet country wines. For golf lovers, Perryville Country Club, a semi-private golf course, welcomes public playing. After a long day, tourists can find lodging options such as Eggers and Company General Store Bed & Breakfast in Farrar or The Willow House Bed and Breakfast in Perryville. Eggers is a lovingly restored general store reminiscent of visiting grandparents in the country. The story of rural America in the mid-1900s unfolds as guests step across the threshold into another era. David and Karen Pearce, owner of The Willow House, rescued an aging Victorian home and gave it new life as the city’s first bed and breakfast with private dining services.

Hannibal, Mo., known as “America’s Hometown,” is located along the mighty Mississippi approximately two hours north of St. Louis. To get there, take the scenic route along the river on Highway 79, or head north from Samuel Clemens Interstate 70 on Highway 61 from Wentzville. Hannibal is the boyhood home of author Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain. Many of the characters featured in his books, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and others, were based on people Clemens recalled from his time living in Hannibal. Located just south of Hannibal is Mark Twain Cave, which is also featured in Clemens’ writings. Legend has it the infamous outlaw Jesse James used the cave as a hideout. It is also said to have been part of the Underground Railroad. This fall, Hannibal will host its 33rd annual Autumn Historic Folklife Festival, Saturday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The two-day festival will feature artists, artisans and craftsmen demonstrating and selling their work; musicians playing traditional tunes; food cooked on wood stoves; cider fresh from the apple press; and a kids’ area. The Folklife Festival is sponsored and presented by the Hannibal Arts Council. For more details, call 573-221-6545, e-mail

My father has glaucoma and must use eye drops on a regular basis. I’m 51 and concerned about the risk to my eyes. What is glaucoma and how often should I be tested?
Dr. Wieder and Patient
Answer:
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve in the back of the eye. When the optic nerve is damaged, blind spots can develop. Typically, there are no symptoms with early glaucoma. In later stages, the condition can affect the peripheral (side) and central vision of one or both eyes. Risk factors for glaucoma include family history of glaucoma, higher degrees of near- or far-sightedness, previous eye injury or surgery, or chronic steroid use. However, the main risk factor for glaucoma is advancing age, which means the older you are the greater your risk. People who fall into any of these categories should be seen every one to two years until age 60 and then every year after that. The disease is usually (but not always) associated with higher eye pressures, but higher pressures do not automatically mean that you have glaucoma. In fact, patients with borderline pressures are often followed for many years without needing treatment. In general, glaucoma cannot be cured but can be treated. Most patients do well with eye drops used on a regular basis to lower the eye pressures. In patients who don’t respond to or tolerate the eye drops, then laser procedures and surgical options are available.
