Darlington School and Community Association President’s Report – 5 August 2009 Lulu Mitchell Blue-haired Bingo Bonanza – back in June! Colleen did a fantastic job of calling the Bingo. She was very brave! The whole night including dinner, 10 bingo rounds plus various other games, was over by 9.30pm Thanks to the other staff who attended, all the parents who came and in particular those who helped plan, organise, set up and pack up on the night. It felt like a real team effort with Kathi Hillier as co-ordinator. Anxiety Seminar Instead of an S and C meeting in July, Emma Pinn from the Mental Health Association NSW Inc. spoke to interested parents about recognizing and managing anxiety in children. She mentioned that anxiety is easily treatable when recognized early and I was reminded how important it is to praise the effort our children make more than the outcome. Smoking Ceremony – Welcome to Country plaques On Monday July 6 the School and the S and C combined their efforts to produce a memorable and special day during Koori week. Uncle Max performed the smoking ceremony, the children sang their class songs, a journalist from the South Sydney Herald came and some of our mums produced a sizzling free sausage lunch for all the kids. Thanks everyone for your hard work. Upcoming fund-raising events 1. Fathers’ Day Movie Mayhem – Friday September 4 Sascha Gilles has already prepared the advertising brochure. We need to make sure it is clear on the brochure that the staff are UNABLE to care for children who no longer attend Darlington as this made the dynamics of the night difficult at the Mothers’ Day night this year. Is there anything the staff would like the S and C to do this time apart from organise the brochure and money collection? 2. Revue Night – Friday September 25 Yvette Novak will fill you in on how the preparations are going for this. 3. Fete – Saturday October 31 Affordable Amusements are coming with their Giant Slide, Obstacle Course, fairy floss and laughing clowns. Having them there draws people in but this is not where we make our money for the school. Marianna Koulias has kindly agreed to co-ordinate the Fete but we need parents to volunteer to co-ordinate stalls such as plants, jewelry, a café, books and CDs, games etc. So far we have only one volunteer to look after the cake stall. Co-ordinating a stall doesn’t mean you have to find all the goodies to sell – the whole school donates goodies for all the stalls. He/she just has to oversee a roster of parents or children to sell on the day and make sure there are people to set up and pack up. A note will be going home in the next week to try to find some takers. 4. A walkathon
At the beginning of the year, a Walkathon was mentioned as an easy fundraiser – also healthy and no money to be out-layed. It would be held at school during the week. Is anyone interested in organizing this? Possible date that’s not too close to our other dates and before the heat sets in eg. mid-November? If not, maybe 2010. Sales There’s been a strong response to the House T-shirt sales especially in the lead up to the Athletics carnival next Monday 10th August. Julie is trying to ensure the latest order is received and distributed by then.
