THE REBOUNDERS CLUB The Club for Supporters of Ohio State University Women’s Basketball

NEWSLETTER VOLUME 23 NUMBER 4

HAPPY HOLIDAYS The Presidents Message The speaker for our December 2nd regular meeting was Toni Roesch, former OSU women’s basketball point-guard and Cocaptain and current color commentator for OSU Women’s Basketball games on WOSU radio. Over 78 Rebounder club members listened to her very informative message. Roesch is currently teaching a basketball clinic in the Dublin area to children of all ages from all over the state of Ohio. She enjoys teaching basketball skills, confidence and self-esteem to all of her students. She thinks this year’s OSU Women’s team is very talented and has good team chemistry. The Rebounders Club recognized and thanked Roger McCoy, chairman of our fund raising committee, and all of the volunteers that worked at the concessions stands at all of the OSU football games. We earned over $3,400 with this activity this year. During the meeting, members expressed their concerns regarding the lack of media coverage for the Ohio State Women’s Basketball Team. I have asked Susanne Winegarner, Chair of the Communication and Media Committee, to look into this issue. She will present her findings and recommendations to the Rebounders

MEMBERSHIP Welcome to new members John and Maureen Mariotti of Powell, OH and Michael and Sandy Ball of Hilliard, OH. Of course, Michael Ball is not really a new member, but his wife Sandy is. We would like to welcome back Mary and Charles Lewis of Marysville and their daughters, Aubree and Tessa. We all look forward to seeing each of you at our monthly meetings, and we appreciate your support of the women’s basketball program at The Ohio State University. We currently have 280 members on the roster. Although this is more than we had at this time last year, I am challenging each of us to bring more members into the group. Let’s set a goal of 400 by the end of the year. Together, I believe, we can reach this goal. Please consider asking your friends and neighbors to join us. For your convenience, membership forms are available on our Rebounders web-site. Or, you may stop by the membership table, in the Value City Arena concourse near section 117, and pick up a paper copy. Recently, I had a question from a member about bringing a guest to our meeting. The policy is that we can bring a guest one time so that they have a chance to observe our meetings, but after that one time, we would like them to join the club if they want to come back to a meeting. Martha Peck, membership co-chair

NEWSLETTER MAILING

,

VS.

In the last newsletter I mentioned that those who have their newsletter e-mailed to them are saving the club postage and the cost of printing. However, I did not mention how much they were saving the club. At this point, I e-mail the newsletter to 60 households. At $.42 per newsletter, those members are saving the club $25.20 per month or $252.00 for the 10 newsletters which are sent each club year. Also, if the cost of printing the newsletters is factored in, the savings would be substantially greater. And, you usually get your newsletter seven to ten days earlier if it is e-mailed. Thank you to those who are able to help the club by having your newsletters e-mailed. Martha Peck, newsletter mailer

2009 REBOUNDERS ROAD TRIPS

You have responded well by signing up for our bus trips this year and the busses are really filling up. However, there is still space available and still time to sign up. Sunday games are always very popular for the Rebounders to travel and support the team. The scheduled trips are: Date Location Departure Jan. 25 Purdue 11:00am Feb. 8 Michigan State 8:00am Feb. 22 Indiana TBA

Game 5:00pm 2:00pm TBA

The cost of the bus trip will remain the same as last year; $45/person per trip.

Game tickets are not included in the price of the bus trip. I would prefer you pay for the bus trips by check made payable to The Rebounders Club. Payment can be made when you board the bus. Purdue single game tickets are upper level only at $12 each. However, we can get a group-rate at $5 per ticket if we order in advance. If you are interested in the grouprate ticket, please pay the $5 when you sign up for the trip. Deadline to order the group tickets will be January 15. Michigan State single game tickets are $14 for reserved seats behind our team, or $3 for group general admission tickets (Upper Level). Please indicate which ticket you prefer when you sign up for the trip. Deadline for MSU advance ticket purchase is January 25. Indiana single game tickets are $5 each or $2 for groups of 25 or more. I will collect cash payment for tickets on the bus in route to the game. No advance payment will be necessary. For all advanced ticket purchases, make checks payable to June Allen. Buses will depart the OSU Golf Course, Tremont Rd. and can be boarded 30 minutes prior to departure time. Parking is available in the north lot. CHALISA FONZAi Have you ever wondered who the young lady is who gets to an injured player so quickly? It’s Chalisa Fonza. If you have the

feeling that you have seen her before, maybe you have. Maybe you saw her in 1995. Fonza received her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University in 1992. Her area of study was Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration with an emphasis on athletic training. She continued her education and athletic training by accepting a graduate assistant position at OSU and in 1995 she earned her Master’s Degree in Teacher Education and Physical Education. Chalisa moved on to Cleveland State University from 1995 to 1999. While there, she acted as trainer for the women’s volleyball and women’s basketball programs. Also, she was the coordinator of the student athletic training program and was an instructor for basic and advanced training courses in athletic training. After one year as Assistant Coordinator of Sports Medicine at Oklahoma State University, Fonza returned to Ohio State and has served in the athletic department for seven years. Chalisa works primarily with women’s basketball and golf; however, she is an approved clinical instructor in the OSU athletic training education program. In her spare time, Fonza has served as Head Athletic Trainer for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics in 2005 and as Head Trainer and Equipment Manager for the Cleveland Rockers. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association. Chalisa, we are guessing that all the coaches and players of the women’s basketball team are glad that you chose to return to OSU. The Editorial Staff

FROM THE SOUTH STAND

The club earned in excess of $3300 as a result of the sales efforts of 21 club members. Karen Anthony had the most fun by working five of the seven home games. In addition to all the fun, these club members also earned approximately 18 free Rebounders Club dinners. Thanks to all who participated in this project. We likely will be asked to participate in the 2009 spring game as we did last year, so I may be asking for help again later in the year. I will bring sign-up sheets for the 2009 games to our last meeting, when you will have a better idea of your availability. The sign-up sheet participation will be used to determine the support for continuing the project next fall. We hope to have an improved parking arrangement in place by the fall. There is no truth to the rumor that club members participated in body painting the male and female students in the south stands. It was fun watching them though. Roger McCoy, Fundraising Chair

FUN FACTS: After the first and second weeks of the season, Jantel Lavender was named the Big Ten Player of the Week. This marks the fifth and sixth time in her young career that she has won this award. If there were any questions about the abilities of incoming freshman Samantha Prahalis, she has answered them in the first eight games. Her passes bring “wows” from the fans and she has shown that she can shoot the “three” and drive to the basket.

In the recent game with North Carolina, she dished out 13 assists. Coach Foster continues on his path to getting excellent athletes as indicated with the signing of two highly touted Ohio Players. Emilee Harmon is a 6’ 2” forward from Pickerington Central and Brianna Sanders is a 5’ 11” guard from Princeton High School in the Cincinnati area. Harmon was one of only three underclassmen invited to USA Basketball’s U18 Team Olympic Training Camp this past summer.ii This is the same organization that Jantel Lavender and Samatha Prahalis played for the past two years. We will give you more information about these two in late summer of 2009.

women’s basketball team were treated to a great session. We watched practice, visited the facilities and had the opportunity to ask questions of the coaches and players. It was a great opportunity to see how much hard work the coaches and team do to make this a great season. Plan to attend next year.

The Editorial Staff

Did you know that Jantel Lavender’s toughest critic is not Coach Foster or the coaching staff? Jantel says her number one critic is her twin sister, Jazmine.iii Jazmine, the older sister by 46 minutes, is a student manager for the women’s basketball team and Jantel’s roommate at school. Coach Foster says he is OK with this and believes it is good for Jantel because she has so much respect for her older sister’s values and insight.
