Course Title: Personal Development Course Number: Soc Sci 11a

Credit Unit: 3 units Instructor: Prof. Pedro P. Galeno, RGC, RPm

Description: This course allows for senior high school students to be aware of the developmental stage they are in, for them to better understand themselves and the significant people around them as they make important career decisions as adolescents. The course consists of topics, each of which addresses a key concern in personal development. Using the experiential learning approach, each topic facilitates learning of specific themes in their development.

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1) Explain the basic concepts of the foundations of human development. 2) Relate the processes and stages of human development in understanding the core of the “self”, identity and personality. 3) Appreciate the differences, similarities and relevance of various theories, perspectives and principles of human development and personality through individual and group structured learning activities. 4) Analyse various mental health issues, contextual Filipino “self” experiences and emerging areas of human interests in sexuality, gender, and interpersonal relationships to facilitate relevant understanding and evaluation of the self in relation to society.
