2          My name is Karla Ayala, I am a current student at the University of Houston. I am  pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) with a  certification in EC-6th Generalist. I plan to teach 3rd grade Math/Science. I really enjoy  learning new strategies and approaches to develop a well thought out CMP. I am  currently observing a classroom that is third grade and I really enjoy it. I created this  plan to have a layout/idea of what I want to establish in my classroom. Also, to be able  to look back at this plan and be able to adjust it if needed. This plan I have created I  want it to be universal for all subjects in third grade. I want to be able to use it if I am  teaching Reading or Social Studies. The purpose of this portfolio is to be able to set a  plan up where I can use in my future classrooms.   My belief of classroom management is that rewards and a discipline plan should  be put into effect in a classroom. I am a strong believer that if you give students  rewards when they are behaving good and you have established consequences then  students will less likely misbehave because they already know the consequences. I am  also a strong believer that students should build a relationship between and encourage  centers and table leaders each week. This can give the student the opportunity to grow  and be a way to learn responsibilities. I would encourage autonomy and self-discipline.  These views are related to the choice that I want to become a bilingual teacher.

To have an effective classroom from the beginning of the school year, you must  prepare because the first day can make or break you. As Wong states, the first day is  crucial if you are not prepared then the rest of the year can break you. This will help you  be an effective teacher because it will help you establish control of your classroom. On  the first day of school, the teacher must explain the rules and procedures for the  classroom, also the first few weeks play games to get to know each student well, build a  relationship with them. I would create games and build small groups to get to know  each student. I would get them to fill out an interest sheet and play with a beach ball  (get all the students to the carpet and toss a ball around to each student and they would  have to read the question or statement on the ball). FInally, another activity that I can do  for kids is “All About the Bag” I would provide a paper bag for each student and tell them  to fill this bag with 4 things about each of them.

Having a set up for your classroom will be important for the rest of the year. I  believe if you a correct set up of the classroom and give the students an opportunity of  flexible seating will be a great way for the students to learn effectively. For example, the  theorist Kounin believed in having a rewarding system in the classroom in order for  students to consider there behavior in the classroom. His theory Instructional  Management focuses on the behavior between the teachers and students. I believe we  can tie in this theory to setting up a good classroom environment. It is important to  place the desks a certain way so all the students are facing the front, and not have one  student in the corner etc. When completing my observations this semester, I really liked  my mentor’s teacher seating arrangement and set up of her classroom. The overall feel  of the classroom will definitely affect the environment in the classroom. As a future  teacher, I believe it is important to give all the students a good feel of the classroom, so  it can create a place of a learning and the students can have fun as well.

Classroom Procedures are crucial so students are able to understand transitions,  signals, etc. in the classroom. As a classroom, we would have to practice signals in the  beginning of the school year so the students begin to get accustomed to the new  procedures. Every teacher uses different signals or transition songs. Also, establishing  behavior plans and consequences in the classroom. In your classroom procedures  should be the norms that you want your students to follow. For example, the theorist  Nelson, came up with the idea of Think Time this theory consists of students who are  misbehaving get the opportunity to go sit in a different area of the room or outside the  room to think about their behavior. I believe this is important to implement in the  classroom for students. I would begin the class by welcoming all the students, and  having what they have to do on the board so they can read while putting away there  backpacks. At the end of the day, have a routine established for them. I would use  visuals and repetition for strategies, in order for the students to get familiar with the  procedures. I would implement them by having them posted on the walls and always  refer back to thm. I would send the parents each week a newsletter to keep them  updated in regards to the classroom. I would set up table leaders each week and that  leader would be the person picking up work or leading there table. All these  expectations need to be addressed on the first day of class to parents so they can help  out at home.

Creating a discipline system that is effective is crucial for classrooms. Students  need guidance in what teachers expect for them to behave and what is right from  wrong. In classroom management, we looked at various theorist who have different  ideas of discipline. One of the theorist that stood out to me was Canter & Canter-  Assertive Discipline which is the belief that positive reinforcement and negative  consequences will foster appropriate in the classroom. If you correct a student’s  behavior and you give the student consequences then it will help them not do the same  behavior again. I would not be able to ignore anything in the classroom, I would set up a  rewards chest for the students for the end of the week. Also, set up a system if the  student does a misbehavior they have to write to their parents a letter on why they  misbehaved that day. Also having Congruent communication as Ginott theory states. As  teachers we cannot use language that can hurt a student just because you are mad at  the moment. As teachers we cannot use labeling, arguing, disputing with an individual  or student at all times in the classroom. I would use Think time as a consequence, and  recess time, or privileges. I would also use a reward system if the student does a good  job the whole week.

Getting students engaged in a lesson is hard work. Teachers must look at all the  student’s interest. Keeping the students motivated throughout the year is important, you  want all the students to succeed. To get students motivated and can let them spark  their interest is Genius Hour. This hour will get students working collaboratively and  together on a topic they have chosen together. I have seen this strategy used in my  observation classrooms which I believe is a great way for students to get motivated in  completing their work. The theorist who is closely related to student motivation is Kohn  with Beyond Discipline. His theory consists of techniques such as rewards, bribes, and  more as a source of controlling people. Teachers must provide autonomy, relatedness,  and competence for students. Getting all the students motivated in the classroom will  be a task, but I think challenging the students who already get a concept give them  more to research about or be able to be the class leader in a discussion. The gifted and  talented students need to be given that extra push to continue learning new things and  ideas. Also encourage students who do not see any value in school. I would use the  Shout out activity this way we can encourage and praise those students who did  something great in the classroom. This activity can get students motivated to do good  things around the classroom and get recognized.

I plan to engage the students in the classroom by creating a website where I can  upload activities and open a classroom discussion board, where the students can  interact with each other. This semester I got to witness this in depth, my mentor teacher  used this website where the students are able to collaborate with each other and post  informative videos of themselves explaining a topic that they choose. As the theorist  Albert explains in his theory Cooperative Discipline, educators must use  encouragement, intervention and collaboration in the classroom. This theory can be tied  in with classroom engagement because as a teacher you want to be able to have all  three things and also have discipline in the classroom. There are a couple of ways that I  would be able to use to engage all the students in the classroom, think pair share,  centers, discussions, posters, etc. I would make my classroom a welcoming one and  also give the students an opportunity to share and speak their minds. This would be a  great way to have students excited to come to class everyday. I would build a  community by having them share with each other, and have a folder where they can  write letters to each other. Also, I would create games for teams so they can work  together to complete a task.

In conclusion, the classroom management plan is an important tool to have in  each classroom. It should be a tool to be used throughout the year to set up your  classroom. The theorist that we have learned in classroom management are all  significant when setting up your plan. All theories will influence your decision and  philosophy when creating your own belief of your classroom.
