DEVELOPING CARING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE STUDENTS FOR MANAGING THEM EFFECTIVELY (By: Naveed Iqbal)
The best way to handle the students is to engage them. For engaging the students constructively, the teacher needs to develop caring relationship with them. Developing caring relationships works with all relations of life but the most with the students. When they get this contentment that the person with whom he/she is there for one third part of the day cares for him/her, he/she starts bringing out and sharing the things without any dithering. On the contrary, if the teacher is incapable to win the confidence of the student, it would become unattainable for the teacher to manage the student. There would be a psychological gap and the teacher would not be able to attain the desired goals and this is certain that the precious teaching time of the teacher would be wasted in trying desperately to manage the class. Similarly, developing constructive and productive relationship among the students is also vital. If the relationship among the students would not be encouraging, most of the time the teacher would be engaged in solving their problems, thus resulting in wastage of valuable teaching time. This base of development of caring relationship would automatically travel outside the walls of the classroom to the community and not only during teaching hours but would work wonders outside the class even outside the school too. The development of this caring relationship is not a task too thorny. It can be started even with non-verbal communication. A simple smile of the teacher can work wonders for developing the caring relationship. That smile of the teacher would work as the fuel of student’s life vehicle, and the
exchange of the caring smiles would prove to be the first step of optimistic change. It is a fact acknowledged that the students who develop intimacy are easier to be handled and taught. Just a simple greeting or an expression is more than enough for achieving positive desired results. These simple connecting actions would definitely have positive reactions. Classroom is a mini State of the students. If they would feel confident there, their personality and skills would develop swiftly. So it is more than essential to create a positive caring Classroom environment where students can easily and confidently express themselves. The soft-board in the class having their creations, pictures, duties etc adds another feather in the cap of the teacher. Concept of creation of Students’ Council would work wonders too in effective management. It would pass the silent message that you care for them. Involve the student in framing rules and regulations of the class and in taking other matters related to them. This would turn them more confident not only in the school but also in practical life. Your this small caring act would shape their life. Give the students deep insight into the concept of behaviour by blending it with care. When they would come to know the facts about that, they would definitely ponder upon how to behave with the teachers and fellow students, and how to take care of others, thus resulting in zero discipline problems. The deeper the care, the lesser would be the communication gap between the teacher and the student. Never murder their asking skill with the knife of bullying. Your single act would not only have negative shadow on his present, but would grow dim his ability to ask for ever. When a student asks a question, encourage him/her to express that you care. You have given an ocean of confidence to that little soul by this minor act. Care is the name of patience. When you are crossing a whole gargantuan ocean, you would come across different problems in the voyage. If you are patient, you would finish the voyage with God speed. You are the Captain of the Ship of the Future of each student. Understand your immense responsibility. Keep caring and keep working harder because “Hardwork is a cheque that can be cashed everywhere”.
