:SORS`aVW^b]1VO\USbVSE]`ZR Columbia International University President Dr. Bill Jones is not only a leader at CIU, but is at the forefront of worldwide ministry. Just like CIU, his personal life represents a commitment to scholarship and to ministry. He has degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology, Luther Rice Seminary, Gordon-Conwell Seminary, and Columbia International University. Dr. Jones is a conference speaker and the author of six books. He is also the co-founder of Crossover Communications International, a missions agency that works to accelerate church planting movements among the least reached peoples of the world. Dr. Jones’ greatest passion is personally sharing the love and forgiveness of Christ with people, many of them his guests in the CIU cafeteria. He’s married to Debby Jones who holds a master’s degree in Christian Education from CIU. They have four grown children.

Dr. Junias Venugopal is the dean of Columbia International University Seminary & School of Missions, and also serves as the vice president for educational affairs at CIU. He teaches in the areas of educational ministry, leadership, and research methodology. Before coming to CIU, Dr. Venugopal and his wife, Beth served in India and the Philippines where they were involved in church planting and education. He has also worked in the marketplace, both in India and the United States. Dr. Venugopal’s goal is to be a catalyst in the lives of those with whom he intersects so that they may achieve their God-gifted potential. The Venugopals have four children and two grandchildren. The faculty of the CIU Seminary & School of Missions loves the Word of God, and they love you. These men and women are passionate about equipping you to engage in effective ministry, and are “delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). They offer their offices and homes, their counsel and prayer, their encouragement and experience. They know your struggles, and what it will take to prepare your head, heart and hands. :Sb²a1VO\USbVSE]`ZRB]USbVS` One class, one concept, one competency at a time.

What Makes CIU Unique? CIU is a Biblical University Early in CIU’s history, when we were called Columbia Bible College (CBC), our first president Robert C. McQuilkin defined a biblical university this way: “Neither a Bible institute nor a liberal arts college, CBC offers a curriculum with the spiritual advantages of the former, cultural advantage of the latter.” Our Purpose describes the biblical university in action: CIU educates people from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ. Personal application of our purpose is summed up in Our Motto:

B]Y\]e6W[O\Rb][OYS6W[Y\]e\ Our Mission Statement: CIU Seminary & School of Missions equips Great Commission Christians for service in multicultural communities.

CIU is further defined by our Core Values; beliefs that are so central to who we are, we’ve set them in stone around campus:

Authority of Scripture Victorious Christian Living World Evangelization Prayer & Faith Evangelical Unity CIU Chancellor George Murray takes an online in-depth look at our core values at www.ciu.edu/about/values.html. “The teaching I am gaining from CIU is a constant source to lead me to personal examination of fact and truth, as they relate to my life, relationships, and service to God. As an African-American, the school has been instrumental in confirming and affirming my personal call to global missions and church mobilization. My tuition has been an investment in advancing the Kingdom. I praise the Lord for the CIU journey.” – Margo Williams

CIU’s philosophy is based on an integrated education for the whole person as illustrated by the Educational Triad. This approach ensures that our graduates are equipped and confident for their workplace or ministry. There is no match for the stability that comes from combined development in Academics, Spiritual Life, and Ministry Skills.

3RcQObW]\OZB`WOR( 6SOR1]\bS\b

Effective ministry begins with Academic Excellence, founded on knowledge of Scripture and knowledge of the world. You will be challenged academically by your professors and your classmates.

6SO`b1VO`OQbS` Effective ministry is the fruit of discipline in Spiritual Life Formation. From curriculum development, to advising students, to activities, to chapel programming, prayer days and conferences, we desire that our students continue to mature in their knowledge and love of the living God, and to experience His grace and power.

6O\Ra1][^SbS\QS CIU’s Seminary & School of Missions takes a practical approach to Ministry Skills Development. Our programs include supervised internships to ensure your readiness for the task to which God has called and equipped you.

7\bS`\ObW]\OZ4]Qca(

CIU’s Seminary & School of Missions includes students from around the world. We celebrate the growth that occurs when committed Christ-followers from a variety of cultural backgrounds come together to stretch one another and advance the Kingdom of God. Many of our faculty members served in their professional capacities overseas; others regularly travel to present research, to teach, and/or to minister in countries around the globe. They bring that wealth of first-hand, cross-cultural experience to the classroom. As a result, our graduates are prepared to change the world. Wherever the Lord leads, you can be confident that He will use your CIU education to achieve His purposes in the world.

Whether your CIU studies are on campus or online, opportunities abound to connect with fellow students who will support you, challenge you, inspire you, stretch you and draw you into the community that is the Lord’s special blessing for this season of your life. CIU’s beautiful 400-acre campus provides plenty of opportunities for fellowship – from sharing a meal in the cafeteria to chatting on a bench. Online coursework and interdependence for advice and prayers keep students connected who are otherwise separated geographically or by demands of their careers. The Graduate Life Council, governed by students, for students, facilitates community building through events such as off-campus retreats, game nights, city tours and karaoke nights. The Wives Fellowship and Married Student Organization offer additional outlets for bonding and fellowship.

17C/Zc[\WO\RabcRS\baW\bVS4WSZR Jonathan Schaeffer is the pastor of Grace Church in Cleveland, Ohio and corporate vice president of The Christian & Missionary Alliance. How CIU Seminary & School of Missions prepared Jonathan: “CIU had a huge impact on my life! It was a greenhouse environment for me – stirring chapel services, passionate and caring professors, lifelong friends, shaping ministry experiences, and NPSF*ONZNJOJTUSZBOEMFBEFSTIJQUPEBZ *PGUFOSFnFDUPOMFTTPOTMFBSOFEEVSJOHNZZFBST at CIU.” Helen Jaio is pursuing a Ph.D. in New Testament studies. How CIU Seminary & School of Missions prepared Helen: “As an international student whose bachelor degree was in engineering, the Master of Divinity Academic Ministries track helped me establish a solid foundation in exegesis and biblical theology as well as in the biblical languages for doctoral studies. The faculty set before me an example of sincere truth and academic rigor that will have a lifelong impact on me. Meeting professors who serve in so many countries of the world is such a great privilege, and an enormous encouragement. It is not for one nation nor one generation, but Soli Deo Gloria (to the Glory of God alone) that we live and serve. I am truly grateful for the passion, training, teachers and friends that CIU gives me. What a joyful journey!” Andre T. Melvin is the senior pastor of Temple Zion Baptist Church, located just two minutes from CIU’s campus. How CIU Seminary & School of Missions prepared Andre: “The quality faculty at CIU provided me with the training necessary to handle the Word of God appropriately and effectively. My teaching and preaching skills have been greatly enhanced as a result of my studies at CIU. Also at CIU, God helped me to understand that He is calling me to be a pastor with a heart for missions. In other words, God wants to use me to mobilize, in particular, our predominantly African-American church to take part in serving the mission field.” Richard Bustraan serves as the pastor of Cavary Chapel Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. How CIU Seminary & School of Missions prepared Richard: “I have always thanked God for directing my steps to CIU and carry in my heart the fondest memories. It was there I grasped the meaning of regular, fervent, corporate prayer, learned from the godly lives of faculty members, discovered a deeper confidence in my faith from God’s Word and His grace, had my eyes opened to the world of missions and my passion deepened to reach people of other cultures and other religions with the Good News, met and married the most amazing woman on earth and fell more deeply in love with the Lord Jesus Christ. Given the shortcomings of any human institution, it is difficult for me to imagine a better preparation.” The Rev. Jeryl Salmond is a current student in CIU Seminary & School of Missions and a senior vice president and wealth advisor at the investment firm of Morgan Stanley where he has been employed for over 23 years. In addition, he is an ordained minister at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, S.C. How CIU Seminary & School of Missions is preparing Jeryl: “My experience at CIU has been extremely rewarding personally and professionally. CIU Seminary & School of Missions has prepared me to teach and preach in a contemporary culture without diluting the gospel regardless of the setting. Challenging, yet accessible and caring professors have made the discipline of rigorous study an enjoyable experience.” Mr. Williams organizes training events for pastors in countries where the gospel is not always welcome. We would show you his face, but it could cost him his life. He represents thousands of CIU Seminary & School of Missions graduates who are committed to reaching the unreached.

You’ll have most of your classes in the Robertson McQuilkin Building and the Schuster Building (1). The patio area between the two is a great place to hang out between classes and chat or to check your e-mail. The G. Allen Fleece Library (2) has almost 130,000 books and media items and over 250 current periodicals and thousands of bound periodicals. In addition, the library offers over 100 databases for research by students and faculty. But perhaps the best part is – it’s quiet. There are 180 study carrels situated throughout the library for student use along with a lounge area and four small sound proof rooms for private study and listening. The Victory Prayer Towers (3) is a great place for meditation on The Word and communication with the Lord. Occasionally corporate prayer takes place at the prayer towers, such as a candlelight vigil. Shortess Chapel (4) are where we meet for chapel 5 6 7 services and other important events such as commencement. The Pointe (5) is a ridge over the Broad River with the skyline of downtown Columbia in the distance. “The State” newspaper of Columbia calls it one of the best places to watch a sunset. Stay in shape at The Moore Fitness Center (6). The Center features basketball and volleyball courts, a weight room, aerobics equipment, and locker rooms. The Rossi Student Center (7) houses the bookstore, the post office and the dining room where friends meet to eat and chat with the CIU president.

“I am a missionary to the seventeen 5th graders I see in my classroom every day. My prayer is that Jesus shines through me each day as I lead and support them on their way to success.”

Susan Watson M.A. in Teaching; B.A. in Communication 5th Grade Teacher Columbia, SC

Susan Watson believes that God’s call for her to impact the world is in a public school classroom. That’s why after completing her undergraduate degree at Columbia International University, she continued to prepare herself professionally at CIU’s Graduate School. CIU provided her with a strong biblical foundation that has helped her shine the light of Jesus throughout her profession. How about you? Whatever it is that God is calling you to do, don’t stop learning and growing. At CIU we’ll equip you to change the world. Visit www.ciu.edu/mymission for more information!
