WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

ARTISTE Making Wine and Art Accessible by Mark Storer

N

ew World and Old World wine classifications have always been a little bit at odds with one another. In France, for example, one doesn’t buy a bottle of Pinot Noir, one buys a bottle of Burgundy. European winemakers have always put an emphasis on terroir, soil and land, not on grape variety. New World winemakers have made the grape varietal king and so buying wines from either Old or New World purveyors has become more of an education than an exercise in choice. Enter Bion Rice, whose family winemaking foundations include Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, and who decided that while he learned winemaking in the New World, it was the Old World idea of blending and cuvee winemaking that intrigued him. “The longer I spent in the winery learning the craft and science of winemaking, the more interested I became in the art of blending wine. I found that blending really appealed to my senses and was more creative.” Turning

8

from his roots at Sunstone to the Old World art of blending wines, Rice began Artiste Winery and Studio in downtown Santa Ynez. Artiste is not just another winery, though – as is evinced by Rice’s dedication to cuvee blending rather than a focus on varietals. “Artiste allows me to focus solely on quality, without being ultimately concerned with designating single-vineyards and political appellations, or staying vintage and varietal on the label,” he says. Still, that wasn’t the entire basis for his focus. Working together with artists, Rice developed, not only a unique winemaking facility, but an artist’s studio as well. Rice built a winery dedicated to using the highest quality grapes to produce truly singular wines from vineyards all over the state. He is, in essence, using California as his pallet to create exotic tastes for your palate. It’s a synergy borne of the artistry of winemaking and thus, Artiste’s name. The winery’s showcase of local and worldrenowned artists at the facility showing their work is the lynchpin in this unique wine

studio. This month, Artiste will host the paintings of Craig Nelson an artist known for his rich, lush oil paintings, Nelson is a favorite of many collectors including James Garner, Neil Simon, The Toyota Corporation and many others. His work will be displayed at Artiste for all to see. But it doesn’t stop with seeing other artist’s work at Artiste. In the Santa Ynez tasting studio, prepare to explore your own artistic side as a public canvas is on display for each customer to paint, draw or express their own creativity while tasting premium California cuvees. “That’s why we chose a salon setting for our Tasting Studio, where visitors may express themselves and share their opinions with others,” says Rice. “In museums and galleries, visitors are expected to keep quiet and to themselves.” At Artiste, however, customers are encouraged to express not only their own creativity, but their opinions and thoughts about the wines they’re drinking. “I hope Artiste opens people’s minds about blends and helps them to trust and share their own impressions,” Rice adds. At Artiste, the

subjective is celebrated, talked about and shared. The studio itself is a sort of monument to the 1870s impressionist art movement in France. The studio is designed to look like the Hotely Baudy in Giverny, France where the impressionist movement is thought to have begun. Its location in Santa Ynez, itself a unique frontier town that still retains a kind of old world charm, allows Artiste to stand out from other tasting rooms by drawing attention not to vineyards, but to a town setting and a creative and artistic setting. Each release from Artiste includes a release from one of its many artists on the label and is accompanied by a food pairing and art show featuring those very paintings and a discussion with the artist as well as autographed bottles. The synergy of art and wine comes full circle when the inspiration within the bottle becomes the same inspiration outside the bottle, on its label. Rice’s unique blends, themselves an homage to Old World wine blending traditions have given birth to beautifully crafted wines such as Toretta. With a base of the Italian varietal, Nebbiolo, Rice blends in Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small bit of Barbera. The Bordeaux combine with the Cal-Itals and the result is now an Artiste library wine. Artiste goes where few other wineries have chosen to go, directly into the art of winemaking. But rather than make that art inaccessible and out of touch, Bion Rice, and the rest of the Artiste crew, have brought the artists and the winemakers right out in front for all to see. Customers can even sit in on Rice’s blending sessions and talk about the choices he makes while he makes them. In short, Artiste brings its art – and its wine – to the people. Artiste is located at 3569 Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez. They are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

J. Paul Rosilez – Where ‘Almost’ Isn’t Good Enough by Dave Wilcox

A

ttention to detail comes with the territory of a pharmacist. Filling a prescription “almost” correctly just doesn’t cut it. Joe Rosilez brings that same precision and lofty standards to his winemaking for J. Paul Rosilez Winery in Paso Robles. “Almost” just isn’t good enough. “I’m probably the pickiest guy making wine,” J. Paul said during a brief break from his job as pharmacist. Besides the chemistry background a pharmacist brings to the art of making wine, Rosilez said that being a stickler for details helps him as a winemaker. “Everything has to be done just right,” he said. “I’m making sure that when the wine gets into the bottle, it’s exactly what it needs to be.” J. Paul produces an array of wines using fruit sourced primarily from Herder Vineyards near Creston. The vineyards, southeast of the J. Paul Rosilez winery and tasting room, provides the winemaker with Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery’s 2001 Pinot Noir from the Gold Coast Farms vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley earned a gold medal at the Orange County Fair. Besides the 100-percent varietal releases, J. Paul also produces a red blend combining Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon that is

10

bottled under the label “Apothecary.” Also available is a dessert-style wine using Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc called “Katash” – a blending of the names of his two daughters, Katelyn, 3, and Ashley, 5. “That is their college fund,” J. Paul said of the sales of “Katash.” J. Paul and his wife, Whitney, are expecting their third child, which promises to make their lives even busier – if that’s possible. “It’s crazy,” summed up J. Paul. Just how tight is J. Paul’s schedule? Well, the interview for this article occurred in a tiny waiting room just outside the pharmacy where he works. He admits he doesn’t need much sleep – maybe four hours a night. That’s fortunate, since J. Paul said he performs most of his winemaking between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Seems like Midnight Cellars might have been an appropriate name. So, how did the pharmacist become a winemaker? In a sense, J. Paul married into the business. Not that his wife came from a family of winemakers. But it was Whitney who introduced J. Paul to wine appreciation. Before they married, the couple spent a lot of time touring Napa Valley wineries and, ultimately, held their wedding at Chimney Rock Winery. As a wedding present, Whitney presented her new husband with a de-stemmer and wine press. The family’s veterinarian gave the couple five tons of grapes and J. Paul embarked on a winemaking career. The venture began in Lodi, where J. Paul’s family raised livestock. In the first year, J. Paul produced five barrels. He received help from Adam LaZarre of Monterey County’s Hahn Estates Winery. When the family decided to move south, they initially looked in Santa Ynez. But then they found a 40-acre parcel east of Paso Robles and built a 5,000-square-foot winery and a tasting room on the property. J. Paul said they pressed their first wine there this year. “We’re a family winery,” said J. Paul, noting that his mother typically staffs the tasting room while he works at the pharmacy and his wife, who was a pharmacist herself until two years ago, raises the children. J. Paul Rosilez produces about 3,000 cases www.winecountrythisweek.com

annually, said J. Paul, with most of the sales coming through the tasting room and wine club. The winery did land a contract to supply Santa Barbara’s exclusive Bacara Resort with its Chardonnay. J. Paul said his winemaking style is one that emphasizes producing approachable, foodfriendly wines that aren’t overly extracted. He makes textured wines with softened edges. Reds are aged between 18 and 24 months, then kept in the bottle for a year before they’re released. “Quality is always the biggest issue,” he said. “If a wine isn’t up to standards, we won’t force it into the bottle.” The payoff for the long hours, said J. Paul, is that people enjoy his efforts. “The best thing I get is when people come into the pharmacy and compliment my wine,” he said. “It doesn’t take a lot. If they’re enjoying what you’re doing, then you do, too.” The J. Paul Rosilez Winery tasting room is located at 4889 Dry Creek Road at the intersection of Highway 46 East and Jardine Road. The adobe-style building is on the left. Up to eight wines are generally poured each day, including two library wines. The tasting room is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Be sure to visit before December 1 for an exhibit featuring the art of Kevin Sweeney. Call (805) 226-0550 for additional information. A website is expected to be launched soon.

Annual Beaujolais Celebration at Adelaida Cellars In the wine trade, the term “cult” is usually associated with rare, pricy wines that are bought and sold at auction, sometimes changing hands several times before someone realizes they’re meant to be consumed rather than traded. At the other end of the spectrum is Beaujolais Nouveau, a wine and an annual harvest celebration started in France centuries ago that continues today as well as in other countries. This cult is all about enjoying the first wine of the vintage with good friends and hearty food on the third Thursday of each November. In honor of this practice, Adelaida Cellars presents its Annual Beaujolais Celebration and Fall Pickup Party at 6 p.m., Friday, November 16, in the Barrel Room of its west side Paso Robles facility. Chef extraordinaire Claude Chazalon will be serving traditional coq au vin (chicken with wine) for up to 120 guests, including wine club members wishing to pick up their fall shipments. The cost is $30 per person and is complimentary to all wine club members. Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the Gamay Beaujolais grape, and unlike most red wines, it is bottled without barrel aging prior to release. The wine is extremely rare in California and it is believed that Adelaida Cellars is its only Paso Robles producer. “Our goal is to capture the exuberant personality of the Gamay grape,” said winemaker Terry Culton. “This aromatic dry red wine is meant for immediate gratification and consumption.” Fruit for Adelaida’s Beaujolais

Nouveau was harvested August 29 at the winery’s HMR Estate Vineyard. One acre of Gamay Beaujolais was planted in 1964 on what was then called Hoffman Mountain Ranch. The historic vineyard also boasts the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the South Central Coast. Reservations can by made by calling 1-800-676-1232 or online at www.adelaida.com.

Established in 1981, Adelaida Cellars is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery situated 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 1,800 feet of elevation in the Santa Lucia Mountains. Its highly acclaimed Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhône varietals and Zinfandel originate in two principal vineyards (HMR and Viking) that are recognized for their chalky mountain soils, temperate climates and long growing seasons. The winery offers many interactive functions throughout the year: an inviting tasting room, educational seminars, library tastings, wine club events, winemaker dinners and seasonal festivals produced by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (pasowine.com).

The event festivities are scheduled to be held Friday through Sunday, November 2-4. Event participants can enjoy everything from winemaker dinners, a Grand Tasting with auction as well as an array of winery open houses. Most events during the weekend sellout, as the SLO Vintner’s limit the number of attendees in order to give their guests that small-town family feel experience. The weekend festivities begin on Friday evening, November 2. Eight different dinners will be held throughout South San Luis Obispo County. SLO wineries and restaurants partner to create unique and festive wine and food experiences. Dinner tickets must be purchased with the individual wineries, and contact information is listed below and at www.slowine.com. The heart of the weekend is held on Saturday, November 3. More than 50 San Luis Obispo wineries and restaurants/ caterers celebrate the harvest! This Central Coast’s premier wine tasting and auction features a relaxed setting seaside and an experience you don’t want to miss. Wine auctioneer, Greg Quiroga, from Reynolds and Buckley will lead the exciting live auction with a wide range of wine formats and experiences for the curious to the connoisseur. The live auction includes a variety of lifestyle lots such as A Culinary Trip to Paris, private dinners in vineyards with winemakers and a few of your closest friends, custom-etched and hand-painted large-format wine bottles, and so much more… Most of these lots are about relationships, as many of them include personal time with winemakers and the families of the wineries, which makes them “priceless” and something you just can’t go out and buy. Interested in being front row for the auction? New this year, you can purchase a corporate table (for eight guests) that is upfront with VIP treatment. The spectacular flavors of local winemakers and chefs will be accompanied with smooth sounds of jazz this year from San Luis Jazz. For just $75 you enjoy a day of food and wine in Avila Beach and complimentary admission to Sunday open houses at participating wineries. ARROYO ROBLES A True ‘Family-Run’ Winery by Dave Wilcox

A

rroyo Robles is certainly a family-run enterprise. Bob and Tanis Shore, along with their children, Brianna and Jason, started making wine in 1998, sharing equipment with three other wineries in a converted apple barn in See Canyon near Avila Beach. Bob is the winemaker, with help from assistant winemaker Mauricio Marchant, while Brianna handles the tasting room and marketing, and Jason oversees the wine club and technical support. Bob Shore spent 30 years as a petroleum engineer after graduating from Stanford University, then decided he wanted to be a farmer. The family initially grew stone fruit, table grapes and cotton and wheat in the San Joaquin Valley, said Brianna. Ultimately, the family decided to get into the wine making business. Their wine press has moved three times, but they’ve settled successfully in Paso Robles, where they are planning to open a winery sometime in 2008 on the 60-acre vineyard the Shores own off of San Marcos Road. Twenty-four acres of the vineyard are planted, much of it to Syrah, which is the heart of the Arroyo Robles’ Rhône-oriented program. Not that the winery is a one-note operation. Arroyo Robles produces an impressive array of varietals, including Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Grenache, Petite Sirah and

16

www.winecountrythisweek.com

Tempranillo. Additionally, they produce a Mourvedre Rose! and a Syrah Rose!, along with a pair of sparkling wines and a trio of varietal Ports. The Arroyo Robles 2005 Chardonnay, using fruit from Monterey County, captured a gold medal at the 2006 Mid-State Fair. Set to be released this fall is a 2005 Tempranillo and a 2005 blend bottled under the label “Little Star,” featuring Tempranillo, Syrah, Petite Sirah and a splash of Merlot. With the opening of their handsome downtown tasting room in March 2006 across from Paso Robles’ historic City Park, said Brianna Shore, the winery is becoming a well-known piece of the region’s booming reputation. “With this location,” she said, “things have just skyrocketed.” Arroyo Robles currently produces about 3,500 cases annually, said Shore, but plans are to increase that number to 5,000. Shore also said distribution soon will become more widespread. Up to now, however, demand through Arroyo Robles’ wine club and at the tasting room is often threatening to overwhelm supply. The Arroyo Robles tasting room is at 739 12th St., at the corner of 12th and Park streets in the historic Mastagni Building, and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. More information is available by calling (877) 759-WINE, or you can email [email protected].

Enjoy the Fabulous Wines, Views of B & E Vineyards Just a few years ago women winemakers were a novelty. Only a handful of persistent and talented females were able to push their way to the top in a very competitive field. More and more though, women are not only at the helm of some very prestigious wine operations, they are also garnering their share of accolades and awards. Patricia Bello of B&E Vineyards is a perfect example of the creative spirit that epitomized the women of the vine. Patricia Bello Patricia did not come to her calling in the usual fashion. She and her husband, Jerry began by planting grapes and selling them to local vintners. Patricia, a cutting horse trainer and breeder left the farming duties to Jerry. The vineyards provided her with a marvelous view from her hilltop home and she came to love their brilliant displays in the fall and spring, but winemaking was not something she even considered. Along the way though, she developed an expensive habit. “I love a good bottle of wine but unfortunately I seem to particularly like the ones that cost a hundred dollars or more. That’s why I had to start making my own! My goal was to produce a really great wine that was also affordable.” With the assistance of other local winemakers, Patricia honed her craft and became a truly exceptional winemaker, overseeing the production of nearly 4000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah

and a red blend called Red Rhythm. Her insistence on a twenty month aging in French oak barrels produces a rich, velvety wine that has helped her meet her goal of a creating fine wines that will fit into almost anyone’s budget. This year her 2004 Cabernet took the gold at the Paso Robles County Fair and her Syrah and Red Rhythm both won gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Competition. B&E Vineyards is located on Creston Road in Paso Robles. A drive out to their tasting room will not only provide one with the opportunity to enjoy fabulous wines, but a chance to take in the awe-inspiring view of rolling vineyards that Patricia so loves. On the top of the highest hill on the property, the Bello’s have built a charming western style saloon in which visitors can relax, sip three different reds (a Rosé is in the works) and be entertained by the warmth and wit of the winemaker herself. PCPA TheaterFest Presents The Sound of Music The Marian Theatre will come alive with The Sound of Music this holiday season. Running November 8 through December 23, this classic and endearing musical is based on the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. It features an unforgettable Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Climb Every Mountain.” A spirited young postulant named Maria is sent to serve as a governess for Captain Von Trapp, a widower with seven children. Her unorthodox methods quickly win over the children but clash with the regimental conduct the Captain insists upon. Director Roger DeLaurier said, “What should be the happy ending after the fairytale romance – the lonely mountain girl gets her prince – is delayed by the invasion of Austria. The happy ending does come however, when they escape.” Marian Theater is located at 800 S. College Drive in Santa Maria. For tickets and more information, call (805) 922-8313 (Wed-

Santa Ynez Valley Artists Studio Tour, Nov. 17-18 The 2007 Santa Ynez Valley Artists’ Studio Tour (SYVAST) will take place the weekend of November 17-18. Eighteen Valley artists, working in a wide variety of subjects, styles and mediums will greet visitors in their private studios from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those two days. Included in the price of the ticket, which is $25 per person or $40 for couples, will be a wine and cheese party at the Wildling Art Museum on Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m., where participants can mingle with the artists, see more examples of their work and savor the current exhibition, “The Poetry of Nature: Paintings and Lithographs by Russell Chatham.” Proceeds from ticket sales and 20% of the sale of artists’ work that weekend benefit the Wildling Art Museum, a museum dedicated to the art of America’s wilderness. Artists who are helping the Wildling by participating in SYVAST this year include landscape painters, Jim Farnum and Gwen Cates, both of whom have been featured in the Santa Barbara Visual Arts Studio Tours; abstract painters, Rebecca Gomez and Esther Munger; sculptors John Cody, Blake Rankin and Pat Roberts; printmaker,

Every month, C’est Cheese hosts a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening cheese tasting, usually during the third week of the month. C’est Cheese features a selection of five delicious cheeses from a different country or region, to which each is paired with an appropriate glass of wine. Although, they have been known to get crazy and mix things up a little bit with special feature tastings from time to time – such as chocolate and wine, honey and cheese, or even fondue and raclette. The tastings are seated and you should arrive punctually since it is more of a structured event where guests all taste the cheeses in the same order, learn how they are made, the history of the region from which they come and discuss cheese as a group. Tastings generally run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. or so, and reservations are required, as they do tend to sell out. Prices are $15 per person or $20 with wine (subject to slight variation from time to time). You can sign up one of two ways: phone (805) 965-0318 or email: [email protected]

Private Cheese Tastings For those looking to entertain a larger group, C’est Cheese also hosts private cheese tastings, which they are able to structure a little more eleborately, usually entailing four cheese flights along with four paired wines.
