Natasha Sanborn, Ph.D. QUALIFICATION STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS • As a Marketing and Communications Consultant, helped non-profit research institutes, technology transfer start-up businesses, law firms, and entrepreneurial scientists understand biotechnology issues and their business, regulatory and technical implications. • Represented WiCell by speaking at numerous engagements to various interest groups and organizations, senior management, WiCell and MIT board members and other stakeholders. • Educated journalists and other media professionals on how to communicate human embryonic stem cell scientific principles, patent and ethical issues to their audiences. MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATIONAL EXPERIENCE • Managed WiCell’s overall operations, including personnel of the WiCell Research Institute with a budget that increased from $1 - $5 million annually. • Expanded WiCell facilities, research programs and personnel ~10 fold, from a small start up facility with 2 FTEs to a state of the art research institute with 13 FTEs (7 direct reports) and ~35 other participating researchers. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE • Boosted the licensing revenues of a family of cell-based drug screening technologies by 40 fold, generating $1+ million in revenue and becoming one of MIT’s most successful unpatented biomaterials. • Led the administration of all grant submissions and awards at WiCell, earning WiCell the designation as a National Stem Cell Center, one of three Exploratory Centers for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research, by the NIH. ACADEMICA EXPERIENCE • Held Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Instructor in Neurosciences at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. • As Assistant Scientist at UW Department of Medicine, performed independent scientific research related to stem cells, diabetes and skeletal muscle metabolism. • Holds Ph.D. from Medical University of South Carolina; has taught biology and graduate molecular endocrinology classes. • Authored twelve scientific publications (ten in prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journals, six as first author, one co-author on review article, and one co-author in book chapter).
