Palm Sunday April 5, 2009

We are like a roomful of lamps all brilliantly lighted and trying to out-dazzle each other on Sunday. We enjoy our own company so much that we become members of an exclusive club, instead of missionaries. — Vance Havner

We are missional Anglicans seeking the kingdom of God in our hearts, our homes, our church and our world.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated.

The First Lesson: Isaiah 45:1-9 Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

7

The Psalm The psalm will be read as prompted by the Lector.

Psalm 22 1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? *

Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? 2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; *

and by night, but find no rest. 3Yet you are holy, *

enthroned on the praises of Israel.

4In you our ancestors trusted; *

they trusted, and you delivered them.

5To you they cried, and were saved; *

in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.

6But I am a worm, and not human; *

scorned by others, and despised by the people. 7All who see me mock at me; *

they make mouths at me, they shake their heads; 8‘Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver— *

let him rescue the one in whom he delights!’ 9Yet it was you who took me from the womb; *

you kept me safe on my mother’s breast. 10On you I was cast from my birth, *

and since my mother bore me you have been my God. 11Do not be far from me, *

for trouble is near and there is no one to help.

The Sermon Please be seated.

The Nicene Creed Please stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;

That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;

That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest.

Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Please offer your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving, either silently or aloud.

12

The Confession of Sin And now, O Father, we pray to you also for our greatest need, the forgiveness of our sins:

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: May the peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

Morning Prayer: Rite Two Monday through Thursday. 9:30 a.m. Church sanctuary. Bring your 1979 Book of Common Prayer (or use one of ours).

Picnic On The Lawn Please join us for a Good Shepherd picnic on the lawn this morning following the service—weather permitting.
