Bulgaria lies in the Balkans in south-eastern Europe. It borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the River Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Rila and its 7 lakes Turkey to the south. The Black SeaPeaks defines the Pirin extent of the country to the east.

The Black Sea
Khan Asparuh, migrated with some of the Bulgar tribes to the lower courses of the rivers Danube, Dniester and Dniepr and conquered Moesia and Scythia Minor from the Byzantine Empire, expanding his new khanate further into the Balkan Peninsula. A peace treaty with Byzantium in 681 and the establishment of the Bulgar capital of Pliska south of the Danube mark the beginning of the First Bulgarian Empire. LANGUAGE: The Bulgarian language is the earliest documented written Slavic language. Its historical development is characterized by four main periods - dopismen (9 century), Old Church Slavonic (9-11 century) mid. Bulgarian (11-14 century) and new Bulgarian (15 th century onwards). Modern Bulgarian language was added to the Southern Slavonic languages and is one of 23 official languages in the European Union. RELIGION: The majority of the inhabitants of Bulgaria are Christians. Most of them (82.6%) are eastern orthodox, other 1.7% are Catholics, and 1.6% are Protestants. 12.2% acknowledge Islam.
