Bloom On! Hat Designed by Terry Matz for intheloopknitting.com For more free knitting patterns visit http://www.intheloopknitting.com Spring Forward with our Bloom On! Hat. This easy knitting pattern is a great way to get a jump on spring! And you can start spring cleaning your stash by using odd balls for the hat band and flower. Instead of curling under, the rolled brim lies flat almost magically, thanks to a couple of rounds of purl stitches after the first few knit rounds. The knit flower is perfect for using up colorful oddball yarn you hated to throw away and is simple to knit. Although this pattern is written for bulky weight yarn it is easily adapted to any yarn weight - just modify the pattern to the gauge of the yarn. Materials Yarn: Color A: 90 yards, bulky weight. Color B (band): 45 yards, bulky weight. Color C (flower): 30 yards, fingering weight. The example was knit with Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Cameo Turquoise (Color A), Cameo Rose Quartz (Color B) and Featherwisp Sassy (Color C). Button Circular Needles, Size 10.5 US (6 mm), 16" long. Double point needles, Size 10.5 US, 6 mm. Stitch Information Gauge in stockinette stitch for Color A: 10 st = 3 in (7.5 cm) Finished measurements: Hat body about 20" (25cm) in circumference. 8.5" (21cm) from cast-on edge to crown. Increase or decrease in multiples of 8. You will need to adjust the decrease for your total number of stitches. Hat Brim: Cast on 73 stitches in Color A. Rounds 1-2: Color A: Knit. (First round of hat only: Slip first stitch. Knit to last stitch. Knit last stitch with slipped first stitch, being careful not to twist the round. This will close the round and decrease one stitch. 72 st. Place stitch marker.) Switch to Color B. Round 3: Knit Rounds 4-5: Purl Switch to Color A.

Knit until piece is 2.5 in from cast-on edge. Roll brim up if it isn't rolling naturally. You should have about 7 rounds in the brim (2 color A, 3 color B, and 2 color A).

Hat Band and Body: Switch to Color B. Round 1: Knit Rounds 2-8: Purl Switch to Color A. Knit until hat is about 5.5 in from rolled edge. Decrease: Switch to double pointed needles (or continue with the circular needle as far as you comfortably can -- for me until about round 6 -- and then switch). Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round Round

1: *K6, K2tog. (63 st) 2: Knit. 3: *K5, K2tog. (56 st) 4: Knit. 5: *K4, K2tog. (45 st) 6: Knit. 7: *K3, K2tog. (36 st) 8: Knit. 9: *K2, K2tog. (27 st) 10: Knit. 11: *K2, K2tog. (18 st) 12: Knit. 13: *K2tog. (9 st)

Finishing the Body: Cut the yarn leaving about 6" tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches. Pull stitches together tightly. Thread tail through hole in crown. Draw crown closed securely by pulling tail. Weave the tail and all other ends through stitches on wrong side. Flower: Cast on 80 stitches in Color C.

Knit until piece is about 1.5 in from cast on edge. (First round only: Slip first stitch. Knit to last stitch. Knit last stitch with slipped first stitch, being careful not to twist the round. This will close the round.) Cut the yarn leaving about 12" tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread the tail through the stitches. Pull stitches together tightly to form "flower". Secure the flower to the hat band using the tail. Sew a button in the center of the flower using the remaining tail. Copyright © 2009 by Terry Matz. Do not reprint without permission.
