The phone rang at Pratt Taylor's house at nearly three in the morning . Pratt fumbled for the phone in the dark . He answered groggily after the fourth ring .
"Hello," Pratt mumbled into the receiver. "Mr
Taylor. Thank goodness. I need your help." Pratt knew the voice , for sure . But still drowsy, he could not quite place it. "Mr. Taylor! " the man said again in a raspy, loud whisper. "I am in jail. I was allowed one phone call. I'm calling you ." 2

Then , the fog cleared . Although nearly ten years had passed since their last encounter, Pratt was able to detect something familiar in this voice It belonged to a boy named Martin Hall , one of the most brilliant math students he had ever taught. But while Pratt recalled that Martin possessed an outstanding talent for math , he also had a knack for getting into trouble . Still , they had established a strong student-teacher bond , and when Martin graduated from Middletone High School , Pratt had told him , "Call me if there is anything you ever need ." So here it was - the call in the middle of the night. "Yes , Martin . Is that you? " "Yes , Mr. Taylor. Can you help?" "What do you need?" "Bail money." "What did you do?" "We'll talk about that later. Can you get me one thousand bucks?" Pratt knew he could , but he was hesitant. What had Martin done? What was Pratt getting himself into? Pratt's belief in honouring his word determined his decision. "Yes , I can . Where shall I bring 1t?" "I'm at Elkton in Maryland . My brother will come by your place in the morning . Give the money to him , and he will come and bail me out " ''Okay." Upon hanging up the phone , Pratt was overcome by a dreadful feel ing his intuition told him that the decision to bail Martin out would be one that would upset him for a very, very long time .

Patricia Ong , 71 , ts a bod y painter · She paints pictures on people's fac_es an_d, hands at the National Zoo Visitors will definitely notice her while wa,t,ng to take the train ride at the starting point. She will be there , with her forearm stretched out to show off the various an imals she has painted on her skin "Get your face painted ," this sprightly lady will say 5 to persuade the children "Won't it be cute to have a little dolphin on your hand?" she w,11 suggest to them . Sometimes, she would be mobbed, surrounded by those eager childrenJo have her "masterpiece" ~ ~1r skins Sometimes, she sits alone under her large umbrella with her tubes of w~~Qased paints and brushes 10 2
Patricia is not a professional artist. Art critics describe her paintings of owls, eagles , tigers and fishes as "cute" Nothing more. This 1s not a big deal to the English native who came here after her marriage to a Malaysian in the 1950s After all , she only started face-and -hand painting in March when the Malaysian Nature 's Society needed 15 something novel to attract the crowd to come to their Floral Exhibition in Tanjung Tuan , Melaka

Patricia can always be seen at the train nde station , come rain or shine , on most Saturdays , because painting has always been her passion Besides that, it gives her happiness to see that the fruits of her labour 20 help the animals in the zoo . "It's not so much the money," insisted the former headmistress who revealed that all proceeds are given to the zoo for the animals' upkeep. "I have seen some of the children jumping up and down after getting their faces pa inted and that gives me the most satisfaction ," she added . 25

Patricia never feels bored telling about the awkward moments she has experienced . The challenges as a face-and -hand painting artist also thrill her "Some people have slippery skin which makes it very_ hard_for the paint to stick so you_h_a.Y'._e tQ_aQQl'.i__tflL~keu_~y_e_cs . Another problem is hairiness which makes it im_eossible for any work to be done," she said . 30 "Unless they shave , there is no way the paint would stick . One guy proposed that I do a painting on his neck which was about the only spot that didn't have hair," she laughed. Listening to her stories , one may think Patricia has never experienced any sad moment. On the contrary, she spent three years grieving That 35 was when her husband, the late Jeffry, passed away due to bone cancer. She refused to meet people or take part in social activities Later, she came to her senses and realised that this was not the way to live, "Being old does not mean that you should give up an active life Many old people lose their flexibility when they are not active for a long period 40 of time ," she added. She later joined the Malaysian Nature Society.

Fund for Nature. Recently, she went to Terengganu and Melaka to patrol parts of the beaches which have been declared turtle sanctuaries . Patricia 1s asthmatic and uses an artificial hip. Despite that, she is an active volunteer with the National Association of Stroke of Malaysia .
