BE(ME) & B.Sc.(NS) 2009 PASSING OUT-HIGHLIGHTS
AMET TO BE CRITICAL PARTNER IN DEVELOPING NIGERIAN MARINE HUMAN CAPACITY – DIRECTOR GENERAL, NIGERIAN MARITIME ADMINISTRATION AND SAFETY AGENCY
23rd July, 2009. Hon. Mr. Ishiaku Shekarau, Executive Director of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), was on a visit to Amet University, to grace the occasion of the passing out ceremony of the 5th batch of BE Marine Engineering and B.Sc Nautical Science cadets. Addressing the gathering on behalf of Mr.Temisan Omatseye, Director General of NIMASA, he said considering the huge manpower demand for seafarers at the international arena, NIMASA has launched Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) to train pool of seafarers to satisfy the meet the demand supply chain. 45000 seafarers would be required to crew over 10000 vessels that are expected to join the global merchant fleet in next three years, he said. In actualization of this programme, he hoped to partner with Amet University, taking advantage of the robust faulty and facilities available at the campus. Recalling the political support both
the countries exchange so far, he mentioned that there is no doubt that the tie with the university will even more strengthen the relationship between the countries.
Congratulating Amet for the efforts it has taken to disseminate the knowledge on marine education, Mr. B N Prasad, Managing Director, Bernhard Schulte Ship Management( India ) Pvt. Limited said, that more awareness has to be made on this fast growing sector, that is expected to have more of finance allocation in the future. As the returns are tremendous, quality seafarers should dedicate their service for the development of the country, he added. Though world trade depends 90 percent on merchant navy ships, India mans only 8 percent which needs to be addressed at the policy level, he suggested.
Welcoming the guests and parents to the function, Mr. J. Ramachandran, Chancellor of the University briefed over the institutions history and thanked all the supporters without whom such a success would not have been possible.
Capt. S. Bhardwaj, Vice Chancellor, gave the Passing out address, administered the “Oath of Honour” and installed the new Parade Commander Academy Cadet Captain Cyril Mathew in the finest traditions of Merchant Marine training.
The following were the Gold Medalists this year:BE (Marine Engineering) OLQ – Cadet Ajed Jithu Mohammed K. placed with Mitsui OSK Lines. Academics – Cadet Mohammed Sthick placed with K-Line. General Proficiency – Cadet K. Anjan Somanna placed with Mitsui OSK Lines.
B.Sc. (Nautical Science) OLQ – Cadet George Simon placed with Mitsui OSK Lines. Academics – Cadet Sharat Bhagra placed with Mitsui OSK Lines. General Proficiency – Cadet Savio Francis Roshan Beniltus placed with Shell U.K. ********
