Yellow Garci? Thousands lined up the streets to view the passing of the convoy that brought the remains of former President Cory Aquino from Greenhills to Intramuros, Manila. People flashed the “L” sign that stood for Cory’s Laban party that stood against Marcos’ KBL while confetti fell from the tall buildings along the busy streets of the Makati business district. It was an EDSA 1986-like scene that is fitting for the EDSA Revolution hero who is not only admired for her role in that miraculous uprising but, more significantly, for her continuous participation in the succeeding efforts to rebuild the nation. People are suddenly talking about what happened during the revolution as if it just happened recently. Participants are busy telling and retelling friends about what they did back then as the younger ones listen with intently. Many can feel the change in the attitude in the wake of the passing of the woman that led the nation in its successful attempt to show the world how truly powerful a united citizenry can be. It appears that the EDSA spirit has been resurrected. Does this spell doom for the current president whose track record is an exact opposite to that of the revered former president? They were the only female presidents this country ever had. Both were catapulted to power by people-led uprisings that toppled their respective predecessors who were ousted because of their misgivings while wielding tremendous power. Both promised not to seek election but only one kept that promise while the other changed her mind and went on to cheat her way to victory. Cory was not perfect but she was never a thief while this other lady, while said to be “perfect” in the eyes of Mike after that “figure enhancing medical procedure”, is the leader of all the crocodiles in the overcrowded pond. Will the main protagonist in the embarrassing “hello Garci” controversy, who was also accused of large scale corruption in the fertilizer scam and the ZTE under the table deal among others, finally be asked to account for all her misdeeds? Will she succumb to the Yellow Fever fast sweeping the country? A call might not save her this time.
